    Cloth Diapers vs Disposable Diapers

Cloth Diapers Vs Disposable Diapers: Which Should You Choose?'

Having trouble choosing between cloth and disposable diapers? Learn about diapers and determine which are best for your child.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. So, have you prepared your baby shopping list? Do not forget to list diapers on top of it. Here is why:

Before your baby is born, you should spare some time to make the diaper usage decision: cloth or disposable? Both kinds of diapers have merits and demerits, and neither option is superior. Most parents today opt for disposable diapers, but some parents continue to swear by cloth diapers. You may even go for a combination: cloth diapers at home and disposables when you go out. Keep reading, if you haven't already made up your mind, and your mind is loaded with certain queries.

Are Cloth Diapers Good for Babies?

To have a closer look at reusable cloth diapers and whether they are good for babies or not, let us discuss the advantages & disadvantages of them:

    Advantages of Using Cloth Diapers

    1. Available in cotton, terry cloth, or flannel, a reusable cloth diaper can come either as pre-folded pieces of cloth liners or as an all-in-one (a diaper and cover that looks similar to a disposable diaper).

    2. While cloth diapers come with greater initial investment, they’re way cheaper than disposables.

    3. And, if you’re worried about the dyes and gels used in disposables, then using a cloth diaper is a more natural way of diapering.

    4. Plus, the fact that these diapers are less absorbent than disposables means more diaper changes (a disadvantage), but it may mean fewer diaper rashes in the long run (an advantage).

    5. The cloth diapers come in several prints and colors to choose from, unlike disposable diapers.

    Disadvantages of Using Cloth Diapers

    1. Cloth diapers can be messy although some come with disposable liners that make them easier to clean.

    2. And, they’re more cumbersome to change unless you use the all-in-ones (which are more expensive).

    3. You’ll be doing more laundry which means higher water and electricity bills.

    4. And, unless you’re using disposables when you’re out, you’ll probably have to carry a few poopy (and smelly!) diapers back home with you.

    5. Plus, for some babies, they can actually lead to more diaper rash because they don't absorb moisture. And, you can't use most diaper rash creams and ointments with cloth diapers, either.

However, investing in cloth diapers for your baby could be a pocket and eco-friendly option as they require some initial expenses only compared to disposable diapers. The cloth diaper price may seem higher for the first time, but it is not a regular expense, unlike disposable diapers. Cloth diapers can help you save a sum of around Rs.20,000 a year. As far as environmental safety is concerned, cloth diapers add less to landfill waste than disposable diapers.

Are Disposable Diapers Bad for Babies?

Although there is a huge conflict on using disposable diapers for babies, the convenience of these can never be ignored. Read on to know the advantages and disadvantages of using disposable diapers.

    Advantages of Using Disposable Diapers

    1. They’re convenient and easy to change, thanks to the strips attached to the back panel that fastens in the front. Nowadays pant styles diapers are also available to make the experience even better. Pick a size based on your baby’s weight and age for the best fit.

    2. Traveling is easier, too, because you can just toss dirty diapers without having to carry them back home.

    3. What’s more, you’ll be changing fewer diapers a day since disposable baby diapers are ultra-absorbent, have an inner liner that keeps wetness away from the skin, and don’t tend to leak.

    4. They also may lead to fewer diaper rashes because they're so good at absorbing moisture.

    Disadvantages of Using Disposable Diapers

    1. Although there have been no studies that show that the chemicals (like dioxin), dyes, and gels used in disposables cause harm. Some babies can have an allergic reaction to these types of diapers, which may mean more diaper rash.

    2. Another con: If you pull too hard, the tabs on some disposables can easily rip.

    3. Also, disposable baby diapers aren’t the greenest way to manage your baby’s poop — disposables account for 3.4 million tons of landfill waste per year and don’t decompose.

    4. If you're up to flushing some of the contents down the toilet first (especially when your baby starts solids and the bowel movements are more formed), you can significantly reduce that waste. The ultra-absorbency in disposables can also make potty training harder because toddlers are less likely to feel wet and uncomfortable.

How to Make a Right Diapering Choice?

It could be challenging to choose out of disposable diapers and washable cloth diapers initially. As a beginner, you can try using both. For example, you can use cloth diapers for daytime and disposable diapers during the night. Once you get hands-on with the usage, you can switch to anything you find the best.

A parent knows what is best for their baby. Before driving to any conclusion, you can adopt a try-and-error method. Follow a 3-day adaption rule whenever trying anything new for your child. Make a decision based on your baby's comfort and your instinct.
