One of the most worrying things for couples trying to conceive is infertility especially if you have been trying to conceive for some time and not succeeded. Fertility tests are the first step to determine any fertility issues and consequently their treatment. But it is important to understand the ideal time to get tested and the signs and symptoms you need to watch out for.

When should you get fertility tests done?

You should not rush for fertility tests after just one or two months of trying to conceive. Fertility tests are typically prescribed for a woman who has been having regular sex without birth control measures for at least 12 months but failed to conceive. Doctors will analyze the medical and sexual history of the couple and prescribe the relevant tests to determine exact reasons behind failure to conceive. It is important that you openly and honestly discuss everything about your medical history and sex life with the doctors so that the correct diagnosis is made.

    Signs and symptoms of infertility

It is tough to simply tell if you are infertile but you should watch out for the following symptoms that are good indicators of infertility:

    • Irregular periods - Women who do not have regular periods occurring at an interval of 28 to 33 days are more likely to suffer from infertility.

    • Painful and heavy periods - Another key sign of infertility is painful and heavy periods as it could be due to a condition called endometriosis that diminishes the uterus’ ability to support pregnancy.

    • Medical conditions - Medical conditions like thyroid and diabetes can also cause infertility.

    • Pain during sex - Pain during sex can be due to many reasons but is also indicative of hormonal disorders that can cause infertility.

    • Hormonal imbalances - A common cause of infertility in women is hormonal imbalance. Some signs of hormonal imbalance are facial hair, reduced sexual drive, weight gain, hair fall, itchy and scaly skin.

    • Repeated miscarriages - If you have a history of repeated miscarriages, there are good chances that it could be due to fertility issues.

    • Injuries and diseases of pelvic area - Infertility can happen if you have had any injuries to your pelvic area or suffered from pelvic diseases in the past.

Though infertility is a serious issue, you can overcome it by getting tested at the right time and following the prescribed treatment along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
