What is the Cervical Mucus Method?

The Cervical Mucus Method is a form of organic family planning. It helps understand the colour and texture of cervical mucosa so that a woman can know the exact period of ovulation. The colour of the cervical mucosa changes before ovulation to promote the easy transportation of sperm. Through this secretion, women can gauge their period of fertility. This is used to avoid an unwanted pregnancy.

How do I check the cervical mucus method?

The hormones that regulate the monthly cycle also cause the cervix to generate mucus. It is a gooey substance on the cervix that causes the discharge to come out of the vagina. Throughout the menstrual cycle, the colour, texture, and quantity of the cervical mucus change.

The mucus must be examined daily, and the results must be recorded. This aids in preventing pregnancy. Periods can be predicted by observing changes in the mucus. On safe days, it is acceptable to have unprotected vaginal sex. Other alternative birth control methods should be employed, and vaginal sex should be avoided on unsafe (fertile) days.

The ovulation method and the billing method of contraception are other names for the cervical mucus testing method. This technique can be used with the help of a professional, such as a doctor, nurse, or family planning consultant.

The cervical mucus method of birth control must be used sparingly until mucus has been tracked for at least one cycle. The results are more favourable when the temperature approach is used with the cervical mucus testing method. The phrase "symptothermal technique" refers to combining these two.

How can I check the cervical mucus?

It is important to understand how cervical secretions alter throughout a regular menstrual cycle. The following things must be observed:

  • There should be no cervical secretions for 3-4 days after the period ends (also known as dry days in billing methods)
  • Secretions appear sticky throughout the next three to five days
  • Following the next 3-4 days, a lot of clear, wet secretions can be seen before and during ovulation.
  • No cervical secretions were seen for 11–14 days till the beginning of the next period.

The duration of each of these phases may differ. If the mucus secretions don't stick to this pattern, it is better to get in touch with a healthcare worker. This could be due to an infection that has to be treated.

Consult a doctor under the following situation:

  • A woman just had her first period, gave birth, or stopped using birth control pills.
  • Breastfeeding woman
  • A woman's menopause is to begin soon.
  • women who are suffering from a disorder that interferes with normal ovulation.
  • When a patient has recurrent reproductive tract infections, the doctor may advise against using the cervical mucus approach.

What days are safe for sexual activity when using the cervical mucus method?

Safe and unsafe dates differ from one person to the other.

Safe days often fall into one of the following stages:

  • It begins after ovulation, when the slickest mucus disappears and the discharge becomes cloudy and sticky before clearing up, just prior to your period.
  • This lasts for an average of 11 to 14 days.
  • The dry days immediately following the period may also be safe if it is a long cycle. Refer to the second bullet above.

Unsafe days:

  • The days during periods are unsafe, especially if the cycle is short. It is difficult to know what cervical mucus looks and feels like when it’s mixed with period blood.
  • The body begins producing sticky mucus a few days after the end of the period but 2-3 days prior to the first sign of slippery mucus.
  • During unsafe days, the body produces slippery mucous until ovulation. This lasts for about 3–4 days. Unsafe days end about 4 days post slippery mucus peaks.

What can cause changes to my cervical mucus?

Activities such as the following can cause a change in cervical mucus:

  • Vaginal sex
  • Using lubricant
  • Use of medications
  • Breastfeeding
  • Surgery of the cervix
  • Use of douche
  • Early menopause
  • Use of the birth control pill

What are the benefits of the cervical mucus method?

It is one of the easiest and safe methods. This method avoids the use of any medications or pills.

What Are the Cervical Mucus Method's Drawbacks?

This approach does not offer protection from STDs. Cervical mucus can also alter in appearance and texture due to a number of other factors. It can be tricky to analyze these changes to both identify ovulation and prevent pregnancy.

Consult a healthcare provider to know if the cervical mucus method may work. Family planning experts often recommend combining the cervical mucus method with other fertility awareness methods, such as the basal body temperature method.
