A newborn baby’s arrival is the most joyous time in a couple's life. But while you are elated, you can experience mixed feelings about how to proceed with newborn baby care. Well, worry not! With our top 10 tailored tips for the initial phase of baby care, you can overcome any common fears and hurdles, and ensure that you enjoy parenthood to the fullest!

10 Baby Care Tips for New Parents

The first few months of babies are crucial. As newborns depend on their parents for everything, the responsibility increases. With some proper baby care techniques, you can master newborn baby care in no time. Here are the 10 things that you need to do right:

1. Breastfeeding the new baby

In the initial days, babies seem to be constantly feeding, maybe every hour! But gradually, their breastfeeding patterns get settled, and you will have to feed them when they want and for the duration they want. They will soon have fewer but long breastfeeding sessions. You can determine if they are hungry if they:

  • Are restless
  • Suck their fingers
  • Root (turn their heads and open their mouths)
  • Make murmuring sounds
  • Turn their heads and open their mouths (rooting)

2. Holding the correct way

Your newborn is delicate; their neck muscles aren’t developed, so you must touch, hold, or handle them safely and correctly. When you pick up your baby, let his head rest on your shoulder and keep your one hand gently on his neck and head area. You can also rest the baby's head in one of your elbow’s coves and use your other hand to hold his bottom.

3. Understand the needs of your crying baby

Crying is your baby’s only mode of communication. If he is crying more than usual, observe him and try to understand the discomfort he is facing. Your baby must be crying because:

  • He wants to sleep
  • He is hungry
  • He is bored and needs attention
  • He wants his pacifier
  • He is feeling too hot or cold
  • He has a blocked nose

4. Changing diapers or nappies

Newborns need a fresh diaper frequently. You must not leave your baby in a dirty or wet diaper for longer, as there are health risks. Yes, bacteria from urine or stool can lead to infections, nappy rash, or sore skin. Good quality baby care products such as breathable diapers, soft wipes, zinc oxide-based baby cream, and diaper rash powder can protect your baby from diaper rashes.

5. Washing and bathing your newborn

The newborn baby care regime does not include bathing your baby daily. You can carefully wash their face, neck, and bottom areas in the initial weeks. Once in a while, you can give them a sponge bath too. They will shift from sponge to regular baths once their umbilical cords fall and the navel area is healed.

6. Massaging routine

Massaging a baby has many benefits; it helps them relax, calms them when they are cranky, improves their sleeping patterns, and helps you bond with them. You can give them a 20-30 minute oil massage soon after a nap, wash, or bath. Remember to use slow and gentle strokes while massaging your newborns.

7. Ensure proper clothing

Your newborn needs comfortable clothing. Avoid dresses with hooks, buttons, or bows. In addition, avoid fancy dresses, shiny fabrics, and the tees that roll down and pull up over your baby’s head. Cotton fabrics and jabla dresses are the best options for your little ones.

8. Touch, talk, and bond with your baby

There are a lot of ways new parents can develop a stronger emotional bond with their babies. To create an initial bonding, you can try the three primary measures: talking, making eye contact, and having skin-to-skin contact. While activities such as talking, breastfeeding, holding or cradling your baby in arms, stroking their backs, and responding to their needs, assist in their brain development, they also make your child more familiar with you.

9. Help them sleep well

While some babies may sleep for hours together, others might only need short bursts of naps. However, you can develop an effective bedtime routine for your little one from 7 to 8 weeks. For a better and longer night-time sleep routine, you must try the following tips:

  • Decrease the frequency of day-time naps
  • Dim the lights
  • Read a bed-time story
  • Do not talk near the baby
  • Sing a lullaby

10. Choose the right baby care products

When choosing baby care products, consider the quality and safety standards. Steer away from products that have chemicals, artificial fragrances, or unnecessary additives. Follow the below-given checklist to ensure that you buy the best baby care products:

  • Choose products exclusively designed for babies
  • Ensure that all products are free of dyes, phthalates, and parabens
  • Use more hypoallergenic products, as they do not cause allergies
  • Look for biodegradable diapers
  • Opt for plastic-free toys and cutlery

Conclusion

Parenting can be challenging for new parents, as you feel anxious about the best baby care and routine. However, remember that newborn baby care days will get over soon. So, here's wishing you happy parenting!
