    Updated on 2 November 2022

    Introduction

Under-loved, under-appreciated flicks that strike a chord with sections of the audience are the best. Often, the overlooked movies turn out to be cult classics in later years. Netflix has plenty of such underrated hits in its roster. To elaborate further, here are 15 Netflix movies that deserve way more praise and viewership.

15 Best Underrated Movies on Netflix

Here are 15 Netflix movies that deserve way more praise and viewership:

    1. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

An anthology film about death and finality, it combines dark humor with all things the Coen Brothers do best, making it an instant classic among the fans of the director duo. There’s some disagreement about the best story, but you can’t go wrong with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, starring Tim Blake Nelson as the singing, gunslinging titular character.

    2. Barry (2016)

Barry is a film that follows Barack Obama’s coming-of-age, focusing on his college years rather than his later success. It follows the same themes as all John Hughes films and explores what it's like to mature.

    3. Wheelman (2017)

The Wheelan stars Frank Grillo, who is quite brilliant in this film. The veteran Marvel Cinematic Universe actor plays the role of a grizzled getaway driver in this tightly-wound, pulpy film. The grittiness and the short runtime make it a perfect watch.

    4. Mindhorn (2016)

Mindhorn is a silly British comedy that features a washed-up actor taking on the role of his on-screen persona, detective Mindhorn. A somewhat lighthearted take on a murder mystery, the unique treatment of this film is the central selling point.

    5. His House (2020)

A horror starring Sope Dirisu and Wunmi Mosaku as Bol and Rial Majur, it follows the tale of a South Sudanese couple who have immigrated to the UK. Here, they experience overwhelming societal pressure from the hostile locals. To make matters worse, evil forces are lurking in their house, and a dark secret may come back with terrifying visions. The mixture of supernatural elements with racial prejudice makes this film a must-watch.

    6. Tallulah (2016)

Starring Ellen Page (now Elliot Page), Tallulah is a tale of motherhood, abdicated responsibility, and the depressing reality of being a drug-addicted homeless woman in a major American city. It follows the journey of Tallulah, aka Lu. She transitions from a homeless drug addict into a somewhat responsible adult as she is entrusted with caring for a baby.

    7. Private Life (2018)

This movie about a middle-aged couple struggling with fertility was less successful than expected after its premiere at Sundance. However, it's still an excellent performance from Hahn, aka Scarlett Witch, highlighting the importance of humor in the face of tragedy.

    8. Masaan (2015)

A poignant take on casteism and morality, Masaan follows the story of a lower-caste boy who falls in love with an upper-caste girl. The brutal societal retribution for this love forms the crux of the story, making Masaan a cult classic among Indian movie lovers.

    9. Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota (2018)

What would happen if you felt no pain? Director Vasan Bala explores this scenario in Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota. Follow Surya on his incredible journey as he masters his unique condition, learns some cool fighting moves, and uses them to do good.

    10. Super Deluxe (2019)

A Tamil film with three different stories, Super Deluxe, is a tale of confronting your worst fears and inner demons as it follows three characters: a woman who cheats on her husband, a boy with anger issues, and a transgender person struggling with his identity.

    11. The Mitchells vs The Machines (2021)

This science fiction comedy is an animation film by Sony Pictures. The movie's exciting take on how the Mitchell family deals with a robot uprising while on a road trip is an exciting premise. The fact that The Mitchell family is dysfunctional adds to the fun!

    12. Mute (2018)

If you want to watch a film about life in the future that depicts the dark side of society, Mute is for you. The main character, Leo, is a deaf person who can communicate with others through sign language. When he goes to search for his lover in the streets of future Berlin, he encounters a network of the crime beyond his wildest imagination.

    13. 1922 (2017)

An adaptation of the Stephen King novel of the same name, the movie is brilliantly haunting, filled with suspense and originality. It follows the tale of a farmer who conspires with his son to murder his wife for money. Thomas Jane is the show's star, his phenomenal performance as a remorseful farmer seeking redemption being the centerpiece of this movie.

    14. The Lunchbox (2013)

Can a misdelivered lunchbox kindle something beautiful? The Lunchbox explores this question as it follows Ila, a housewife, who sends the lunch meant for her husband to one Sajan Fernandes, played by the late Irrfan Khan. This starts an unlikely friendship between the two as they communicate with paper messages.

    15. Article 15 (2019)

A brutal, unabashed take on casteism in rural India, it stars Ayushmann Khurrana as a tough, city cop. He uncovers strings of murders and crimes that expose the sick nature of casteism in Indian villages. Shocking and thought-provoking, Article 15 deserves your time of the day.
