Breast Pain Reasons: Know Why Women Have Breast Pain?
Read time6 min

Women may experience breast pain at some point in their life. Although such a problem is easy to treat, breast pain may sometimes indicate an underlying problem! In fact, the issue can depict a much more serious problem! A few of the reasons why you may experience pain in breast are given below!

Reasons Why Women May Experience Breast Pain

Here are some reasons why women may experience breast pain:

1. Fluctuating Hormones

Sometimes, fluctuating hormones can cause soreness in the breasts. In fact, this is one of the main reasons why women may experience breast pain in the first place. You may have sore breasts about a few days before your menstrual period. However, after your period starts, the soreness problem alleviates.

Such a pattern is because of a surge in your estrogen as well as progesterone levels right before the menstrual cycle. Thus, eventually, your breasts swell and become tender. If you are in your first trimester of pregnancy, your breasts may remain sore for quite a long time. Yet again, tenderness of the breasts is quite common and is nothing to worry about.

You can eliminate soreness in your breasts by eating a diet that is low-fat, quitting caffeinated beverages for some time, as well as reducing salty foods. Besides, you can also consider consuming medications. If none of the medications work, it may be high time to get a mammogram done!

2. Breast Injury

Your breasts may have been injured due to an accident, and this is why you are experiencing breast pain. If you experience sharp pain right after the trauma and the tenderness continues for days, you may want to consult your doctor as soon as possible. However, an appointment with your doctor is a must, especially if you experience symptoms like lumpiness, swelling, redness, or severe pain.

3. Unsupportive Bra

If your bra does not fit you properly, it may have an impact on your chest wall. Your chest wall may either feel stretched or unsupported. Thus, this may result in soreness of breasts or even mild pain. The pain may shoot right out from your chest wall, causing constant fatigue and pain.

Choosing an appropriate bra, especially when exercising, can help you prevent soreness in the breasts. Many women usually opt for a sports bra during their workout sessions to avoid problems related to soreness. You may want to go for a bra that fits your breasts perfectly and is comfortable as well.

4. Breastfeeding

Sometimes, nursing your child might also lead to tenderness of the breasts. Besides, an improper latch can also cause pain in the nipples. If you experience any sort of pain when breastfeeding, it may be best to talk to your lactation consultant. Thus, this way, you will be able to overcome the problem of breast soreness, especially when nursing your child.

Sometimes, cracked skin around the nipples may also cause pain when your child latches. There are many medications today that can help in preventing dryness of the nipples. However, if you feel like the pain is shooting out from the chest region, it may be high time to get in touch with your doctor.

5. Breast Infection

Breast infection also termed mastitis, can lead to severe soreness of the breasts. In fact, one may experience fever and other possible symptoms due to a breast infection. Mastitis can affect either one breast or both breasts. A few of the symptoms include severe pain, swelling as well as redness of the infected breast. You may want to consult your doctor if you experience such a problem immediately!

It is important that you do not neglect symptoms and problems related to mastitis. Thus, this is because the condition may bring about numerous other problems, especially in the long run. In such situations, early detection of such a problem can turn out to be the best solution. Therefore, make sure to conduct a breast examination every six months to detect any underlying problem early!

6. Medication Side-Effects

Breast pain may also be caused as a side effect, especially if you are consuming a few medications at the moment. A few of the drugs that have been known to cause breast pain include Oxymethone, Chlorpromazine, birth control pills as well as diuretics. Apart from that, Digitalis and Methyldopa can also cause women's breast pain.

7. Breast Implants

One of the most common complications after having breast implants is soreness and ladies breast pain. Sometimes, the scar tissues can surround the implants quite tightly, leading to intense pain and soreness. Besides, such kind of pain can also depict rupture of the implant, whether it be made of saline or even silicone. It would be best to get in touch with your doctor as soon as possible!

8. Breast Cancer

This can come about unexpectedly as well as suddenly. Another fact about breast cancer is that it can occur in women of any age. A few of the symptoms may include discoloration or even redness of the breasts, swelling of the breasts, soreness, as well as puckering of the skin. Extreme pain may also indicate that cancer has developed into an inflammatory sore.

When Should You Consider Seeing Your Doctor?

Although breast pain in women may turn out to be a minor problem sometimes, you must never neglect it. You can talk about all your concerns with your healthcare provider in case you are experiencing unbearable pain regularly. Consider getting your breasts checked regularly in order to prevent such conditions. You may also want to conduct a self-examination of your breasts to detect any formation of lumps early.
