Hair loss is a normal phenomenon for both men and women. In fact, at any given point in time, 10% of our hair, that is in the resting stage, tends to fall out. During pregnancy, however, increased levels of estrogen delay the natural hair growth cycle ensuring that there is more hair in the resting stage and also that they do not fall out when they are supposed to.
This makes our hair look thick and lustrous. But the hair does fall out eventually, post-delivery. This is what happens in most cases. Nonetheless, there are some women who experience hair fall during pregnancy. If you are among those women, then you do not have to bother anymore. Continue reading through to learn more about what you can do to tackle the problem of hair fall!
Hair fall during pregnancy can be attributed to various reasons. A few of the conditions may be reversible; however, you may need medical attention to treat other conditions effectively. Some of the most common ones include:
1. Hormonal changes
During pregnancy, your hormones are continuously fluctuating, thus resulting in changes in both your skin as well as your hair. Although you can try numerous home remedies to calm down certain skin or hair issues, it is usually best to get in touch with your healthcare provider. You may be prescribed supplements to balance your hormones.
2. Genetics
Sometimes, genetics can also play a major role when it comes to the growth of your hair, regardless of whether you are pregnant or not. You are mostly suffering from hair fall due to your genetics, especially if you do not see any medication or treatment working on your hair.
3. Poor Nutrition
Your diet also plays a significant role when it comes to the growth as well as strength of your hair. It is a recommendation that you consume a healthy and balanced diet to ensure your hair receives all the necessary vitamins.
4. Skin Diseases Of The Scalp
Sometimes, problems such as dandruff or even lice on your scalp can have an impact on your hair. You may find yourself losing more hair than usual. In such situations, your doctor may recommend a shampoo that is quite effective when it comes to treating numerous scalp conditions.
5. Vitamin And Mineral Deficiencies Like That Of Iron
It may be best for you to consider consuming foods rich in iron. Iron is definitely an important mineral that every cell of your body requires. Yet again, you may want to be careful as well since too much iron can also have a negative impact.
7. Health Disorders And Issues
Conditions like hypothyroidism and Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) will need direct medical assistance without any delay. If left untreated, the symptoms may get worse with time. Apart from that, you will also have to keep a close watch on your diet.
8. Side Effects Of Some Medicines
If you feel like the hair fall treatment you are using is doing the exact opposite of what it is supposed to be doing, it may be high time for you to change the product or replace it with a better-quality, and a safe product.
9. Reproductive Causes
Reproductive issues like discontinuation of birth control methods, abortions, stillbirths, and miscarriages. Though hair fall during pregnancy is not abnormal, there are certain things that we can do to ensure that the hair fall does not become excessive, leading to permanent hair loss. Besides, it is usually best to treat hair fall problems right from the initial stage. Thus, this way, you can prevent cases of bald spots on thinning hair more effectively.
First, it is important to understand that hair fall is quite normal, especially during the phase of pregnancy. Hair fall during pregnancy needs to be monitored to understand that there are no underlying reasons for this. Here are some treatments that help control hair fall during pregnancy and improve the quality of hair.
1. Oiling
Using lukewarm hair fall control oil to massage our scalp twice a week is a good idea. Use oils derived from argan, olive, sunflower, onion seed, castor, and amla. Argan, castor, and olive oil provide essential fatty acids to the hair, moisturizing them, correcting their pH balance, and restoring their shine.
On the other hand, onion hair oil prevents hair fall, amla oil treats dandruff and strengthens hair follicles to prevent hair fall, and sunflower oil improves scalp health and stimulates hair growth. We should massage the oil for 15-20 minutes on the scalp, leave for an hour and wash off with a mild shampoo.
It is usually best not to keep onion oil for hair growth on your head overnight. Leave the oil on your hair for not more than 45 minutes, and then rinse off with a good quality mild shampoo. Thus, this way, one can effectively maintain their hair.
2. Eating Well
Including fruits and vegetables in our diet ensures that we consume essential minerals, vitamins, and flavonoids necessary to overcome any deficiency that we may be experiencing. Sometimes, mineral deficiencies, especially that of iron, can lead to hair problems during the later stages of your life.
3. Avoiding Extreme Styling
Pregnancy is a time when we can let our hair down, literally. It is best to avoid heat styling and the use of harsh chemicals or styling techniques on our hair during this time. It would also be good to avoid wet combing or to rub our hair dry. We should pat dry our hair or let them dry out naturally.
If these small changes in the hair care routine do not help, then you may need to consult a doctor for this problem. It is possible that there might be some other problem for which hair fall is just a symptom.
