Everything You Need to Know About Pregnancy Weight Gain

Updated on 3 November 2023

Just got the great news that you're pregnant? Congratulations! As an expecting mother, one of the main things to keep in check is your weight and your baby's development. Eating right and exercising are important to ensure a healthy pregnancy. If you are looking for ways to monitor and track your pregnancy weight gain, why not use a pregnancy weight gain chart? With a chart, you can track your pregnancy weight gain by trimester and target a goal weight depending on your personal health and requirements.

Let's find out all you need to know about weight gain in early pregnancy.

At what week do you start gaining weight for pregnancy?

Generally, pregnant women find that they put on most of the weight during their second and third trimesters. In the first trimester, the woman's body is getting used to the pregnancy, and the weight does not necessarily show.

The latter half of the pregnancy is when a woman typically starts showing. Usually, pregnancy weight gain happens in the first 12 weeks of one's pregnancy. This is when women put on 1-4 lbs, but the amount varies according to one's body.

Once the baby starts developing, it can account for about 25-26% of the total weight of a woman's body. As your body is also preparing itself for the delivery, the weight gain typically happens in parts of the body like the breasts, which begin to store nutrients for when the baby is born. Other body parts that may gain weight during pregnancy include the uterus. Here, the presence of the placenta and amniotic fluid also contributes to 3–4 lbs as they expand in size. Again, the weight gain varies from one woman to another and depends entirely on her body type and body mass index.

How much weight should you gain each trimester?

There is no set weight gain that a woman should undergo during pregnancy. One of the main factors that lead to pregnancy weight gain is a woman's body mass index before the pregnancy. In the initial 12 weeks of pregnancy, likely, a woman may not even put on more than 2–4 lbs of weight or none at all. All of this depends on how healthy a woman's body is and how strong her metabolism is.

To maintain a healthy weight gain by trimester, check if you are gaining about 0.5-1 lbs per week. If you're maintaining a pregnancy weight gain chart by week kg, try to check if your weight gain is maintained under 1 lb every week. If the weight gain is unusually more (or even less), you should ideally consult a doctor because it could be a sign of an issue like pre-eclampsia or hypertension.

What weeks do you put on the most weight in pregnancy?

Typically, pregnant women begin to gain the maximum weight after the 20th week of their pregnancy. In terms of pregnancy weight by trimester, this is usually after the 2nd trimester when they gain anywhere between 22 - 28 lbs.

Do not worry! If you're looking at a pregnancy weight gain breakdown, you will notice that the extra weight gained is a combination of your baby's growth and the fat that your body is storing in places like your breast to make milk after the birth of your baby.

In which trimester do you gain the most weight?

According to doctors, the third trimester is when pregnancy weight gain is the highest. During this stage, putting on weight is not concerning, as most women rapidly gain weight just before their child's birth, primarily due to the rapid development of the foetus.

How to maintain an ideal weight during pregnancy?

One of the best ways to maintain an ideal weight during pregnancy is to keep a pregnancy weight gain calculator. Using this calculator will help you frequently track and monitor your weight and help you stick to your goal weight.

Losing weight during pregnancy is not recommended because it could mean denying the baby nutrients. In some cases, weight loss could also lead to a preterm baby. While maintaining an ideal weight is important, check with your doctor or nutritionist on your pregnancy diet and exercise routine, so your weight isn't just ideal for your body and your baby.
