Myth #1: You loose a tooth with each pregnancy

It is a common belief in many cultures that women definitely loose a tooth with each pregnancy. Don’t believe it as good oral hygiene before and during pregnancy will keep your teeth healthy.

Myth #2: You cannot have dental procedures during pregnancy

This is not true as urgent dental procedures can be scheduled during pregnancy but you should postpone any elective procedures for later. Always consult your doctor before you plan a visit to the dentist and inform your dentist that you are pregnant and also about all the medications you are taking.

Myth #3: You must avoid dental X-rays during pregnancy

Pregnant women cannot take dental x-rays is a very common opinion that most people consider to be true. Actually, dental x-rays have very low amount of radiation and pregnant women can take them. The dentist will still take precautions to shield the mother and the baby.

Myth #4: Your baby steals calcium from your teeth

A very common but completely untrue belief is that during pregnancy, the baby takes calcium from the mother’s teeth and it leads to tooth decay. There can be other reasons behind tooth decay but not this.

Myth #5: Pregnant women are more prone to gingivitis

This is a fact as a pregnant woman’s body goes through many hormonal changes that can cause pregnancy gingivitis, a disease of gums with symptoms like sore and puffy gums, redness and bleeding. Good news is that it is easily curable and you should consult your dentist about it.

A common myth is that oral health has no impact on the baby inside the womb. This is not true and women with gum disease can cause problems for their babies and also are at higher risk of preterm delivery.

The Bottom Line

In conclusion, it's essential to prioritize oral health during pregnancy, as it can have a significant impact on both the mother and baby's overall health. However, it's equally important to separate fact from fiction when it comes to common myths surrounding pregnancy and oral health.

By understanding the true risks and benefits, expectant mothers can make informed decisions about their dental care routine and feel confident in their choices.
