Why the baby is crying so loudly? How to stop a baby from crying? These are some of the most common questions parents, especially new parents, have. Let us be honest: a crying baby can be challenging to handle. This blog explores a few different things parents can do when their baby is crying.

Why Do Babies Cry?

Babies cry for many reasons, but they all boil down to one question: what do they want? Babies are born with an inborn need to communicate their needs and wants. However, they cannot communicate with their parents, so they cry instead. As a result, it is important to understand why the baby is crying.

A crying baby is a common challenge that most parents face. There are many ways to calm a crying baby, but not all of them work for every baby. Honestly, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to stop a baby’s crying. The best way to find out what can help a crying baby is by experimenting with different methods and seeing what works for your child.

What Can Help A Crying Baby?

It is natural for babies to cry, and it is also typical for adults to feel frustrated with their baby’s cry, especially when they are unable to stop the baby crying. Here are some things that a parent can do to help a baby crying:

  • Talk to the baby in a soothing voice
  • Rock the baby and hold them close
  • Give the baby something to suck on, like a pacifier or a bottle of water/milk
  • Play music or sing songs that are calm and gentle
  • Rub their back or tummy
  • Take them for a walk in a stroller or carrier
  • Try white noise or lullabies

However, some things should be kept in mind when keeping up with a baby's crying, for example, the shaken baby syndrome.

What Is Shaken Baby Syndrome?

Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is a brain injury caused by the forceful shaking of an infant or young child. Vigorous shaking motion causes the brain to bounce back and forth inside the skull. It can cause bruising, bleeding, and (in some cases) permanent brain damage. It can also result in damage to the nerves and blood vessels leading to and from the brain as well as swelling.

The shaken baby syndrome can lead to lifelong problems such as mental retardation and blindness. In some cases, the shaken baby syndrome can be fatal. The syndrome is often difficult to diagnose as there may be no visible signs of injury. However, if one suspects SBS, a brain scan or MRI should be performed on the baby to determine if there is internal bleeding or swelling.

Things To Do When Babies Cry

Make sure the diapers are dry.

One of the most common reasons for babies crying is dirty diapers. Soiled diapers can cause diaper rashes, a very irritating condition for babies. If the baby is crying, checking and changing the diaper can help.

Feed the baby if needed but avoid overfeeding.

A common reason for crying is hunger. If the baby is crying and it has been a while since the previous feeding, try offering them a bottle or breastfeeding. Babies can also cry due to the discomfort they have due to overfeeding.

Check the baby's temperature.

If the diaper is clean and the baby is fed, the first and foremost thing a parent should do if the baby is crying is their temperature. Check if their temperature is average and whether they have a fever. If the temperature is high, visit a medical professional.

Check for digestive problems (gas issues).

Even babies that feed only on milk can have gases. If the baby’s crying is non-stop and the parent thinks they might be gassy, try burping them or giving them a stomach massage. These will help them.

Turn on a calming sound.

Sometimes a baby cries because of loud noises. If the baby has been startled by loud noises, try playing some soft white noise in the background. A calm, soothing song can help to lull the baby to sleep.

Sing or talk to the baby.

Babies can get bored just like anyone else. If the baby is crying, they might be bored. Try talking gently or singing a soft song or lullaby. Sometimes the baby needs physical comfort and attention. Pick up the babies and gently rock them while singing or talking to them.

Check the room temperature.

Being too cold or too hot can also result in a baby's cry. Parents should check the room temperature and ensure that it is neither too hot nor cold for the baby. Frequent temperature fluctuations can be overwhelming for babies.

A baby's cry is often not that complicated. Parents, even new ones, will take time to understand the baby. Keeping an eye on their routine and some trial-and-error will help parents understand their baby.
