Here are Some Skin Problems That Require Urgent Attention

    Updated on 3 November 2023

Women commonly face skin problems due to pregnancy, hormonal imbalance, and menstrual cycles. Some skin problems are common but need immediate medical attention. Here is a list of some common skin problems in women and ways to identify them and helpful skin problem solutions.

    Common Types of Skin Problems

    1. Acne

Acne is one of the most common types of skin problems seen in women of all ages. Here are a few facts about acne:

    • Acne is caused due to blocked hair follicles and excess oil production by sweat glands in the skin.

    • It is common for women to notice acne during or just before their periods. It is commonly seen during pregnancy.

    • It usually appears in the face, chest, and back areas.

    • When not treated, it can leave behind darkened spots and scars.

    • Moderate to severe acne can be treated with cream, gels, lotions, and oral medications.

    • For healthy skin, it is recommended to seek professional help during an acne breakout.

    2. Rosacea

Rosacea is a common type of face skin problem. One can detect rosacea if the skin is either flushing or blushing with visible blood vessels.

Here are some other facts regarding rosacea:

    • Symptoms can also appear as swollen red bumps, noses, and burning sensations.

    • It is a long-term skin condition. It fades away and comes back.

    • It can be caused by alcohol, exposure to the sun, spicy food, and stomach bacteria.

    • It is most common in middle-aged women.

    • It requires medical attention.

    • It is generally treated with antibiotics.

    Common skin itching problems

    1. Eczema

Eczema is also called dermatitis and can appear in any body part. It is usually a painful and itchy skin problem.

Eczema can infect a body due to several factors like:

    • irritants (soaps and detergents, including shampoo)

    • cold, dry, and humid weather

    • dust mites, pet fur, pollen and moulds.

    • stress

    • The Skin problem solution to reduce irritation is by using thick moisturisers and anti-itch creams. Also, it is important to avoid itching the skin if one suffers from eczema.

    2. Contact dermatitis

It is an itchy skin rash caused due to allergic reaction to any substance, including chemicals, food or cosmetics. Although contact dermatitis usually goes away on its own, one should consult a dermatologist if it doesn't go. Contact dermatitis is usually treated with an anti-itching drug.

Other common types of skin problems

    1. Sunburn

It is a common yet very dangerous skin problem in women. Women have sensitive skin that gets affected when exposed to harmful UV rays. Skin that is not protected from burns leads to skin cancer over a period of time.

Treatment for mild to moderate sunburn:

    • Application of a sunscreen with a 30+ SPF.

    • Taking a cool bath with mild soap.

    • Keeping the skin hydrated by drinking fluids.

    • Using light oil-free moisturisers.

    • Severe burns with fever and pain need immediate medical attention.

    2. Cellulite

Around 90% of the women have cellulite. It generally appears dimpled skin in areas of the body where more fats deposit – seen mainly on the upper legs (or thighs), buttocks and abdomen. Women have this more than men because of their hormones. There is no treatment for this skin problem.

    3. Stretch Marks

It is a very common skin problem seen in women of all ages. It happens when the skin stretches or shrinks very quickly, such as after pregnancy or due to sudden weight loss or gain. It looks like purple or white bands on the skin and can sometimes be itchy. However, it is a normal condition. Proper treatment can make the marks less visible but can't eradicate them completely.

    4. Hives or urticaria

Hives are raised, itchy, red bumps on the skin surface caused due to allergies to food, medicines, and insect bites. It can be seen on one body part or spread across large areas. It gets better on its own, so treatment is not needed in most cases.

    5. Wart

Warts are small, hard skin growth seen on hands and feet. They are common in both men and women. Warts look like cauliflower with tiny black dots. Warts in pressure areas like feet can be painful. It is a viral infection and can spread from one person to another.

Intense peeling and over-the-counter medicines can be used after a doctor advises treating warts. The doctor may suggest surgical removal when the wart is painful. However, warts go away on their own in some cases.

    6. Athlete's foot

It is a common fungal infection seen on feet and can cause severe itching, redness, and cracked skin on the feet. One can treat an athlete's foot with over-the-counter medication; however, seeking a doctor's consultation is recommended when the wart does not go away on its own.

    Wrapping up

Skin is a large organ. It covers the entire surface of the body. It is exposed to harsh conditions every day. Skin problems need attention, just like other health problems. It is important to remember that no one has to deal with their skin issues alone. Teaming up with a doctor, such as a dermatologist, can help ensure a correct diagnosis and the best possible treatment plan.
