A toddler's eyesight keeps sharpening between 1 and 3 years, with better focus, depth perception and hand-eye coordination. Most children reach near adult sharpness by about age 5. Eyes that turn in or out, a white glow in the pupil, constant squinting or head tilting need an eye check. Outdoor play helps, and screens should be limited.
Short answer: Sharpness, depth perception and eye-hand teamwork all improve steadily.
Age | What your toddler can usually do |
|---|---|
12 months | Spots small objects like a crumb, recognises familiar faces across a room, judges distance well enough to cruise and walk |
18 months | Points to pictures in a book, scribbles while watching the crayon, follows a ball that rolls away |
2 years | Matches simple shapes and colours, stacks blocks with good aim, notices small details in pictures |
3 years | Copies a circle, names some colours, catches a large ball, does simple puzzles |
Eyesight keeps improving after age 3 and is close to adult sharpness by around 5. KidsHealth and the American Academy of Ophthalmology describe this gradual timeline.
Short answer: Eyes that don't line up, a white pupil, squinting, head tilting or sitting very close to screens.
Sign | Possible reason | How soon to act |
|---|---|---|
White or grey glow in the pupil (often seen in flash photos) | Cataract or a rare eye tumour | See an eye doctor within days |
One eye turns in, out, up or down | Squint (strabismus) | Book an eye check soon |
Squinting, frowning or tilting the head to look | Refractive error or squint | Book an eye check |
Holding books or toys very close, sitting close to the TV | Possible short sight | Book an eye check |
Bumping into things, clumsy only on one side | Field or depth problem | Book an eye check |
Constant eye rubbing, watering or sticky discharge | Blocked tear duct or infection | See a paediatrician |
Droopy eyelid covering the pupil | Ptosis, which can affect vision | Book an eye check |
Eyes shaking or wobbling | Nystagmus | Book an eye check |
Very sensitive to light | Several eye conditions | See a doctor |
Short answer: Lazy eye (amblyopia) means one eye doesn't develop normal sight. It's easiest to treat in the early years.
A squint, or one eye needing a much stronger focus than the other, can make the brain ignore that eye. Treatment with glasses, patching or eye drops works best when started young. AAPOS notes that results are better the earlier it's found. That's why toddler eye checks matter even if your child seems fine.
Short answer: At well-baby visits, and see an eye specialist any time you notice a warning sign.
Age | What to expect |
|---|---|
Every check-up from 1 to 3 years | The doctor checks eye alignment, the red reflex (light reflecting from the back of the eye) and how your child follows objects |
From about 12 months | Some clinics use a quick camera-based screening (photoscreening) |
3 to 4 years | Picture-chart eye test, once your child can cooperate |
Any age | See an eye specialist promptly if there's a squint, a white pupil or a family history of childhood eye problems |
Toddlers can wear glasses. Children's frames are made to be soft and flexible.
Short answer: No screens under 2 years except video calls, and at most 1 hour a day at ages 2 to 3.
Age | Screen guidance | Better for the eyes |
|---|---|---|
Under 2 years | No recreational screen time | Picture books, faces, outdoor play |
2 to 3 years | Up to 1 hour a day, watched together | Outdoor play every day |
This follows the WHO's guidance for under 5s. Studies in school-age children link more outdoor time with a lower risk of short sight, so daily outdoor play is a good habit to start early.
Short answer: A varied diet with orange, yellow and green foods provides vitamin A and other nutrients.
Food | Nutrient |
|---|---|
Carrot, pumpkin, papaya, mango | Beta-carotene (the body turns it into vitamin A) |
Spinach, methi, other green leafy vegetables | Vitamin A, lutein |
Eggs, curd, milk | Vitamin A |
Fish (if your family eats it) | Omega-3 fats |
India's national programme gives vitamin A doses every 6 months from 9 months to 5 years through government health centres and Anganwadis. Don't give extra vitamin A supplements at home unless a doctor prescribes them, because too much can be harmful.
Avoid kajal or surma in the eyes. Many traditional kohl products can contain lead, and applying them with a finger can spread infection. The US FDA warns about lead in kohl.
Don't put breast milk, rose water or home drops in the eyes. See a doctor for eye discharge.
RBSK screening covers congenital cataract and vision problems. Ask at your Anganwadi or government health centre, or visit a DEIC for a free referral.
Firecrackers and Holi colours are common causes of eye injuries in children. Keep toddlers at a safe distance.
Emergencies: for a chemical splash, rinse the eye with clean water for 15 minutes and call 108 or 112.
Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
Kajal makes eyes big and strong. | It doesn't improve vision and can carry lead and infection risks. |
A squint will go away on its own, or it's lucky. | A squint that stays after about 4 to 6 months needs an eye check. |
Sitting close to the TV damages the eyes. | It can be a sign of short sight, so get a check. |
Eating carrots will fix weak eyesight. | Vitamin A supports eye health, but it can't correct short sight or a squint. |
Toddlers are too young for glasses. | Children can wear glasses from infancy if needed. |
