If you're pregnant, you might hear strangers or friends eagerly tell you that "you're glowing." While the bloating, fatigue, and nausea that show up with being pregnant might make you feel anything but radiant, a phenomenon frequently referred to as "pregnancy glow." It can make your skin look brighter and more profound. There can be numerous reasons for it to occur, and this can be a genuine part of pregnancy.

What Is Pregnancy Glow?

Pregnancy glow is the appearance of radiant, glowing skin on your face that some women experience during pregnancy. It is a natural pregnancy symptom that leaves some mothers flush-faced and glowing. It's not just a mythological phenomenon induced by happiness. The factors contributing to pregnancy glow include fluctuating hormone levels, increased blood flow and excessive oil production, which can make your face look shinier. Pregnancy glow is most apparent during the second trimester, though not all women will notice more glowing skin during pregnancy. You may encounter other skin changes during pregnancy, including acne, rashes, itchiness, and melanoma.

What Causes Pregnancy Glow?

According to tales going back centuries, pregnancy glow is caused by happiness. Some even believe that the sex of the baby causes it. While you may be happy and excited during your pregnancy, the glow has numerous possible medical reasons. These are mainly related to fluctuations in hormones and blood flow, but the glow can also be associated with other changes you're going through.

1. Hormonal changes:

The fact that the body's hormone levels fluctuate during pregnancy is well known. Progesterone can increase the skin's natural oil production, making it appear more radiant. Estrogen can make your skin look flushed, giving you a rosy-cheeked appearance. hCG is known for enabling increased blood volume throughout the body.

2. Increased blood flow:

During pregnancy, your body manufactures more blood because your uterus and vital organs require more blood to support your growing baby. Increased blood volume also dilates your blood vessels, making your skin look flushed.

3. Increased oil production in your skin:

Some women experience excessive oil production from their sebum glands due to hormonal fluctuations. Also, more blood volume can increase oil secretion, especially if you already have oily or combination skin, resulting in unwanted side effects such as acne. However, increased oil secretion along with acne can also make your skin glow and brighten.

4. Skin stretching:

Increased blood flow combined with hormonal changes can lead to skin stretching, which may also make your skin glow.

5. Heat rashes:

It is not uncommon to feel hotter than usual during pregnancy since you are not only dealing with hormones, but the extra weight you carry to support your baby can also increase your body temperature, which can result in heat rashes or hot flashes, both of which can create a "glowing" effect on your skin.

6. Worsening of pre-existing medical disorders:

If you have specific skin issues, your symptoms may worsen during pregnancy. Such conditions include eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis. Due to increased blood flow and hormonal fluctuations, the affected skin may redeem further and appear more noticeable. Sometimes this isn't very accurate for signs of pregnancy glow.

At What Month Does Pregnancy Glow Start?

Pregnancy glow at two weeks is common for many women. However, some women experience pregnancy glow at four weeks, and some don't even experience it. There is no fixed timeframe for experiencing pregnancy glow. However, you may be more prone to experience this glow during the height of changes in your body, especially during the second trimester.

There's still a lot going on with hormone levels fluctuating, but the symptoms of early pregnancy, such as morning sickness and fatigue that might make you feel icky and dull, have usually begun to let up a bit. Regardless, some women experience a pregnancy glow throughout the nine months of pregnancy.

How Long Does Pregnancy Glow Last?

As hormones fluctuate after delivery, the pregnancy glow might fade away. Similarly, you may discover that skin conditions worsened by pregnancy will improve once you no longer have a baby on board. However, this isn't a permanent change to your skin. While most women experience hormonal fluctuations from pregnancy, this doesn't indicate everyone will experience a pregnancy glow. If you don't, there is nothing wrong with it since it indicates that your skin reacts differently to what's going on with the rest of your body.

Is There Any Relation Between Pregnancy Glow And Baby Gender?

While you're eagerly waiting to learn your baby's sex, it can be fun to guess. You've likely heard that specific food cravings or versions can indicate whether you're carrying a baby girl or a baby boy and how you "carry" your baby throughout pregnancy.

Some people also say that the pregnancy glow can indicate whether you're carrying a boy or a girl. However, no scientific proof exists that pregnancy glow and baby gender are connected. Anecdotal evidence online reveals a combination of individuals who state correlations of pregnancy glow between both girls and boys.

If you want to know your baby's gender before birth, it is best to wait until delivery. You may happen to develop a pregnancy glow at any point, but it is unlikely there will be any connection.

Summary

Pregnancy glow is just one of the many changes that you might encounter during pregnancy. Other changes include stronger nails, thicker hair, and reduce dry skin. The pregnancy glow is caused due to increased blood flow and hormonal fluctuations. It might last nine months of your pregnancy, then fade away after your baby is born.
