How Baby Sleep Patterns Change in the First Year and What Parents Can Do

Baby Care

One of the first things new parents realise is that baby sleep is unpredictable. Some days your baby sleeps peacefully, and other days it feels like they are waking up as soon as you close your eyes. This is completely normal. Sleep during a baby’s first year changes constantly as they grow, feed, and develop.

Understanding these changes can help parents feel more confident and less anxious. While there is no perfect sleep schedule that works for every baby, knowing what to expect and how to support healthy sleep can make this phase easier for both you and your little one.

Why Do Babies Sleep So Much in the First Year?

In their first year, babies typically sleep anywhere between 11 to 17 hours in a day. This may sound like a lot, but it is spread across naps and night-time sleep. Babies sleep so much because their bodies and brains are growing very quickly. Sleep supports physical growth, brain development, memory, and emotional regulation.

In the early months, babies do not understand the difference between day and night. Their internal body clock, also known as the circadian rhythm, takes time to develop. This is why newborns often wake up frequently at night and sleep during the day.

Newborn Sleep Patterns (0–2 Months)

During the first couple of months, sleep happens in short bursts. Newborns usually sleep for 30 minutes to three hours at a time, followed by periods of feeding and wakefulness. Most of their waking time is spent feeding, being changed, or being comforted.

Frequent waking is normal because newborns have small stomachs and need to feed often. Whether breastfed or bottle-fed, babies usually wake every two to four hours to eat. At this stage, sleep schedules are unpredictable, and that is okay.

Sleep Between 3–6 Months

As babies grow, their sleep patterns slowly begin to change. Around three months, many babies start staying awake for slightly longer periods and sleeping for longer stretches at night. Some babies may begin sleeping for four to six hours at a stretch, although night waking is still common.

This is also when babies slowly start learning to self-soothe. While they still need comfort, rocking, or feeding, some babies begin settling back to sleep with less help than before.

When Do Babies Sleep Through the Night?

Many parents wonder when their baby will finally sleep through the night. For most babies, this happens around six months of age. Sleeping through the night usually means sleeping for five to six hours without needing a feed.

However, sleep is not always consistent. Even after sleeping well for weeks, babies may suddenly start waking up again. These phases are often called sleep regressions and are usually linked to growth spurts, developmental milestones, or changes in routine.

Sleep From 6–12 Months

Between six and twelve months, babies generally settle into more predictable sleep patterns. They may take two to three naps during the day and sleep longer stretches at night. However, teething, crawling, standing, or separation anxiety can temporarily disrupt sleep.

It is important to remember that waking at night does not always mean something is wrong. Babies may wake due to hunger, discomfort, illness, or simply because they need reassurance.

How Parents Can Support Better Sleep

While you cannot control how much your baby sleeps, there are simple things you can do to support healthier sleep habits.

1. Create a calming bedtime routine

A short, consistent routine helps babies understand that it is time to sleep. This could include a bath, gentle massage, feeding, and a lullaby or story.

2. Respect naps during the day

Skipping naps does not usually lead to better night sleep. In fact, an overtired baby may struggle more to fall and stay asleep.

3. Help your baby learn day and night

Expose your baby to natural light and normal activity during the day. Keep nights calm, dim, and quiet to reinforce the difference between daytime and bedtime.

4. Keep your baby comfortable

Comfort plays a big role in sleep. Temperature, clothing, and diaper quality can all affect how well your baby sleeps.

The Role of Diapers in Baby Sleep

One often-overlooked factor in baby sleep is the diaper your baby wears at bedtime. A wet or leaky diaper can easily wake a sleeping baby, even if they are otherwise comfortable. Constantly wet diapers can also lead to rashes which can further make it uncomfortable for your baby to fall asleep. That is why good quality diapers are important, not only to prevent baby rashes but also give your baby a good, comfortable sleep.

A diaper used overnight should have quick absorption and be able to last through long sleep stretches. If moisture stays on the skin or leaks occur, babies may wake up due to discomfort or irritation.

At Mylo, we design our Baby Diaper Pants keeping these exact needs in mind. Our diapers are built with five layers that work together to support dryness and comfort through naps and night-time sleep.

The soft bubble top sheet feels gentle against baby skin, while the ADL layer absorbs liquid quickly and spreads it evenly. This prevents wetness from sitting in one spot. The SAP and pulp layers lock in moisture, helping keep the surface dry for longer periods.

We also include a breathable sheet with millions of pores to allow airflow, which helps reduce heat and moisture build-up during sleep. The PE backsheet adds leak protection, giving parents peace of mind through the night.

With features like up to 12 hours of leak-proof protection, our diapers are some of the best diapers in India to help babies stay dry and comfortable so their sleep is less likely to be interrupted by discomfort.

A Gentle Reminder for Parents

Sleep in the first year is not perfect, predictable, or easy. There will be good nights and challenging ones. That does not mean you are doing anything wrong. Every baby is different, and sleep patterns evolve over time.

Try to rest when you can, accept help, and focus on creating a calm, comfortable environment for your baby. Small details, like a soothing routine and a reliable diaper that keeps your baby dry through sleep, can make a big difference.

At Mylo, we believe better sleep starts with better comfort. And when babies sleep better, parents get a little more rest too.

FAQ Related to Baby Sleep Pattern

How many hours should a baby sleep in the first year?

In the first year, babies usually sleep between 11 and 17 hours in a 24-hour period, including naps. Sleep is spread across day and night and changes frequently as babies grow and develop.

Is it normal for newborns to wake up every few hours at night?

Yes, frequent waking is completely normal for newborns. Their small stomachs require regular feeding every two to four hours, which naturally breaks their sleep into short stretches during both day and night.

Can a wet diaper disturb my baby’s sleep?

Yes, a wet or leaky diaper can cause discomfort and wake a sleeping baby. Moisture against the skin can also lead to rashes, making it harder for babies to settle back into sleep.

What are the best diapers for babies in India for everyday use?

The best diapers in India for everyday use should offer quick absorption, breathability, soft skin-friendly layers, and a secure fit. In our Mylo Baby Diaper Pants, we combine these features for the daily comfort of your baby.

How important is comfort for baby sleep?

Comfort plays a major role in sleep quality. Factors like room temperature, soft clothing, and a dry, breathable diaper help babies feel relaxed and reduce disruptions during naps and night-time sleep.
