If you are not sure of the rashi, ask your family guruji or check the baby’s janmapatrika. You can read more about nakshatra naming here.
In most Marathi homes, the baby is named at the barse, held on the twelfth day after birth. The baby is laid in a decorated cradle (पाळणा), and the father’s sister, the aatya (आत्या), whispers the chosen name into the baby’s ear, often with a playful “kurrr”. The women of the family then sing palna songs, and the name is announced to everyone. Some families also write the name on a plate of rice. You can read more about the Hindu namakarana tradition here.
Start with the rashi letter, if your family follows it. Use the table above to find the right starting letters.
Say it in Marathi and in English. Names like Rushikesh and Rutuja are written ऋ in Marathi but spelled “Ru” in English. Pick the spelling you want on the birth certificate and use it on every document.
Think about the full name. Marathi names are said with the father’s name and surname, as in Saee Sachin Kulkarni. Say the whole name out loud before you decide.
Honour the family, if you like. Many families pick a name from the kuldevata (Khandoba, Tulja Bhavani, Ambabai) or the Varkari saints.
Ask the aatya. She traditionally names the baby at the barse, so involve her early.

Saee (सई) means a friend, a dear companion (सखी, मैत्रीण) in Marathi. It is a soft, much-loved Marathi girl name, also spelled Sai, Sayee or Saiee. The boy’s name Sai (साई) is different and honours Sai Baba of Shirdi.
Mukta (मुक्ता) means a pearl and also one who is free. It honours Sant Muktabai, the young saint-poet and sister of Sant Dnyaneshwar.
Ninad (निनाद) means a resonant sound or an echo (नाद, गुंजन). It is a popular Marathi boy name with a musical feel.
For girls, Vidya, Medha, Pradnya, Gargi, Sharada and Dnyanada all mean knowledge or honour learning. For boys, try Dnyanesh, Vidyadhar, Chaitanya, Sumedh and Pradnyesh.
Isha (ईशा) means pure and is a name of Goddess Parvati, Myra (मायरा) means beloved, and Riya (रिया) means a singer or graceful one.

Traditionally, the baby’s aatya (father’s sister) names the baby at the barse on the twelfth day, by whispering the name into the baby’s ear as the baby lies in the cradle.
The best Marathi name is the one that feels like your baby when the aatya whispers it at the barse. Shortlist a few, say each with the full name and surname, check the rashi letter if your family follows it, and choose the one that will still make you smile when you call it out across the wada.
