If you are not sure of your baby’s birth star, ask your family astrologer or check the baby’s jathakam.
Malayalam names often end in soft vowel sounds like “a” and “i”, as in Anagha, Nila and Gowri, which makes them gentle and musical to say. Many are pure Malayalam words that describe Kerala itself, such as Ambili (the moon), Thamara (lotus) and Thumbi (dragonfly), while others are Sanskrit names written in the rounded Malayalam script. Many girls are also named after their birth star, like Aswathy, Athira, Karthika and Revathy.
Noolukettu or Irupathettu. In many Hindu homes, the baby is named on the 28th day after birth. A black and gold thread (aranjanam) is tied around her waist, and her father whispers the chosen name into her right ear three times. You can read more about the Hindu namakarana ceremony here.
Mammodeesa. Christian families give the name at baptism, often after a saint, like Kerala’s own Saint Alphonsa.
Aqiqah. Muslim families usually name the baby on the seventh day, with the aqiqah.
Pet names at home. Almost every girl also has a pet name, like Ammu, Chinnu or Ponnu, that stays with her for life.
Start with the birth star, if your family follows it. Use the table above to find the right starting syllables.
Say it with the full name. In Kerala, the name is often said with the house name or the father’s name, as in Anagha Suresh. Say the whole name out loud before you decide.
Check the English spelling. Names like Aswathy and Ashwathi, or Parvathy and Parvati, have several spellings. Pick one and use it on the birth certificate, Aadhaar and passport.
Think about the meaning. A name your daughter is proud to explain, such as Anagha (pure) or Thejaswini (radiant), is a gift she will carry all her life.
Pick a pet name too. A sweet pet name like Ammu or Malu is half the fun of naming a Malayali girl.
