How to Ensure Your Baby’s Safety While Sleeping in a Wooden Baby Cot?

    Updated on 3 November 2023

    The Ultimate Baby Cot Checklist

Your little one is likely to spend a lot of time in their baby cot, so here’s a checklist to ensure you are getting the safest wooden baby cot:

    1. The baby cot is the right size

The baby wooden cot bed should not have any of the bars which are cracked or missing. The top of the baby cot rail in its highest position should be at least 2 feet from the top of the mattress support in its lowest portion.

    2. Smooth corner posts of the baby cot

The corner posts shouldn’t have any fancy knobs as you’ll need to remove them and sand down any rough edges to prevent any accidental injury.

    3. Secured hardware

In a baby cot, the hardware-bolts and screws should be secured firmly, without any sharp edges, rough areas or spot that can otherwise injure your little one. The cot’s wood should be free from any cracks or splits. Never use a cheap substitute from the original parts, instead obtain the replacement parts directly from the manufacturer.

    4. Non-toxic paint

Consider more than the colour when it comes to paint of the wooden baby cot bed. The baby cot’s made earlier had lead in the finish which posed a serious health risk to the babies. In case you have a hunch that the paint is lead based, you better do a quick check on the package to find out more about the lead paint quality.

    5. The mattress if well-fitted

Make sure that the mattress fits well inside the baby cot. To ensure the safety of the baby wooden cot, try the two-finger test. In case you can fit more than two fingers between the cot and the mattress, the mattress isn’t probably right. The harder it gets for you to make the baby cot, the suitable it is for your little one.

Also, if the mattress is new, pull off the plastic and throw it away before using. Make sure that the mattress is firm itself, since a soft one cam increase the risk of SIDS. You can test the firmness of the mattress yourself.

    6. Avoid soft toys in the first year

Make sure never to use any plush toys or soft bedding in the wooden with your baby and yes, that includes the adorable pillow that may come along with the baby cot as they can result in a suffocation hazard.

    7. Don’t use any inclined positions

Such devices can lift an infant off the mattress. The best surface is firm and flat.

Picking out the right baby cot for your little one can take a fair bit of effort and consideration, but while you think about the colours, fabrics and overall look, don’t forget to think about the safety aspect.
