In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
Updated on 27 July 2022
As most of us do, I always dreamt of getting pregnant immediately after marriage. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that life would practically make me learn the meaning of fallopian tube blockage, painful hsg, hundreds of injections, dozens of tablets per day, multiple admissions and procedures, and finally, the one nobody wants to go through, the IVF.
This is Jinoh and I'm 28 years old (born 1992) from Chennai and this is my journey from infertility to the miracle I yearned for, my baby.
I married the love of my life in mid-2017, and I got pregnant a month later, surrounded by loved ones and so much love.... we were all excited. During my 8th week's scan, the doctor told me that she suspected that it was a "blighted ovum" (it is a condition where the gestational sac forms without an embryo mostly due to chromosomal abnormalities). I was told to come for a review after a week, and it ended up as suspected. I had to let the baby go. I was sad but I won't say that I was broken. I was young (25 when I got married) and had lots of time. I believed and thought, the next time, it would work out, because who could be that unlucky, right? But I was wrong, this was just the beginning!
After two months, I conceived again. we were elated and I was confident that this time, it'll definitely work out. I patiently waited for 8 weeks to have my first scan. But before that could happen, I started cramping on my right pelvic side at 9 pm. The pain was unbearable. I was taken to a nearby hospital where I was told that I had an ectopic pregnancy. These terms felt completely new to me. And sadly I had to abort yet again. I decided to take a break for 6 months and I tried to forget it all. I conceived twice after that - but both were chemical pregnancies (a condition where you get a positive home pregnancy test and even your HCG levels get elevated but you end up having your periods 2 or 3 weeks after pregnancy confirmation).
Two years of marriage passed by. Four failed pregnancies had almost broken me but I never gave up on the dream of having a baby. We consulted a fertility expert who ran a battery of tests on me and my husband and the results shocked us - both my tubes were corroded. I went home unable to digest the information. After days of crying and blaming myself, I decided I wanted to go in for IVF, I wanted to be a mother, no matter what! IVF was something that no one in my family except my hubby approved of. But we were sure that we wanted a baby and we were wholeheartedly ready for it! After loads of injections and medicines, we went in for egg collection and embryo transfer. Two beautiful embryos were transferred on 10th of December 2019, and I ended up getting pregnant with twins.
Unfortunately, I lost one baby in week 7. But the other baby was safe and it was like a miracle to me. I gave birth to a healthy baby boy on 26th July. I am happy that I am a mother finally & thank my God for leading me this far. I will forever know the value of a "life" and the precious joy of motherhood and pregnancy. I hope my story will inspire you to never give up hope.
