A good first birthday wish has four parts: the baby’s name, the milestone, one real memory and your relation. Fill in this simple template and you have a wish no one else could send:
“Happy 1st birthday, [name]. This year, I will never forget [one memory: your first smile at me, your first crawl towards the phone, the way you hold my finger]. May you always [a blessing]. Love, your [Bua / Masi / Mama / Chacha].”
A one-year-old will not read the card for years, so you are really writing for the parents now and the child later. A specific memory is what makes them keep it. If you need ideas for what a baby can do at this age, Mylo’s 52-week baby guide covers the milestones many babies reach around their first birthday.
Where you are sending it | What works best |
WhatsApp message | One or two short lines, with the baby’s name |
Greeting card | Three or four lines with a memory and a blessing |
Instagram or Facebook caption | A short line that works with the photo |
Speech at the party | A short story from the year, then the blessing |
Voice or video note (if you cannot attend) | Say the baby’s name, sing a line, keep it under a minute |

नन्हे कदमों से शुरू हुआ यह सफ़र हमेशा खुशियों से भरा रहे। पहला जन्मदिन मुबारक हो।
If you live in another city or cannot attend, send your wish so it arrives on the morning of the birthday, and add something personal the parents can keep.
Morning message: a WhatsApp wish or voice note before the celebrations start
Video message: record a short clip in advance so the parents can play it at the party
Video call during cake-cutting: ask the parents for a two-minute window
Card by post or courier: send it a few days early so it arrives in time
Follow-up: message the parents after the party and ask for a photo, which shows you care beyond the day
The best first birthday gifts are ones the baby can safely touch, chew and drop. At this age, almost everything goes into the mouth, so safety matters more than shine.
Gift idea | Why it works | Safety check |
Personalised photo book with your wish inside | A keepsake the parents will treasure | Keep it on a shelf, not as a chew toy |
Board books with thick pages | Made for little hands | Look for sturdy, non-tearing pages |
Stacking cups or large wooden blocks | Simple play that grows with the child | Pieces should be too big to fit in the mouth |
Soft toy | Comforting and cuddly | No buttons, beads or loose eyes that can come off |
Footprint or handprint frame | Marks the first year | For display, out of the baby’s reach |
Baby skincare gift set, such as the Mylo Baby Wellness Kit | Practical, and parents use it daily | Check with the parents about what they already have |
About silver coins and gold jewellery: these are loved first birthday gifts in many Indian families, so give them as keepsakes for the parents to store. The American Academy of Pediatrics lists coins and toys with small parts among choking hazards for young children. The US FDA has also received reports of deaths and serious injuries, including strangulation and choking, from jewellery such as teething necklaces worn by babies. If the family wants the baby to wear a chain or bracelet for a photo, it is safest to take it off straight after.
Buying a toy in India? Under the Toys Quality Control Order, toys sold in India must carry the ISI mark under a BIS licence, which covers standards for choking hazards, sharp edges, flammability and toxic substances. Check for the mark before you buy, and follow the age label on the box.
Address it to the baby by name, because it is their day and the card becomes a keepsake they may read when they are older. You can add a line for the parents at the end, such as congratulating them on finishing the first year.
A simple and warm option is “Pyaare bhatija, pehle janamdin ki bahut bahut shubhkamnayein” for a brother’s son, or “Pyaari bhanji, pehle janamdin ki dher saari badhaai” for a sister’s daughter. Add the baby’s name and sign off with your relation, like Bua or Masi.
Bhatija is your brother’s son and bhatiji is your brother’s daughter. Bhanja is your sister’s son and bhanji is your sister’s daughter. Using the right word in your wish makes it feel personal, especially to elders in the family.
Keep a WhatsApp wish to one or two lines and a card message to three or four lines. A caption works best as one short line. What matters more than length is the baby’s name and one real memory.
Board books, large stacking blocks, soft toys without small parts and photo keepsakes are safe choices. Avoid anything small enough to fit in the mouth, check for the ISI mark on toys, and give coins or jewellery as keepsakes for the parents rather than for the baby to hold or wear.
Yes. If you missed the day, send your wish with a short, honest line like “Sorry this is late, but you were in my thoughts all day.” Parents of a one-year-old understand busy lives, and a warm late wish is better than none.
