Language Development

• If she hasn't already, your baby may soon start to babble, repeating one-syllable sounds such as "ba", "ma" and "ga" over and over.
• She may even jabber in two syllables – "baba" and "gaga" – making her sounds more complex.
• It’s all progress towards the time when she turns into a talking toddler.
• Make a game of it and chat back to your baby. If she says “baa”, you could say "sheep say baaa".
• If you hear a syllable you can't identify, just look around to see what your baby might be talking about, and respond enthusiastically. For example, "Yes, that is a car! Look at how shiny the red paint is!"
• Taking turns like this helps your baby learn to talk.

• When sleep deprivation is a way of life, it can be hard to function during the day.
• At this age, some babies are able to sleep through the night or to settle themselves back to sleep when they wake.
• If your baby isn't quite there yet, and the sleepless nights are taking their toll, you may want to look into sleep-training methods.
• If you're having trouble sleeping even when your baby isn't waking you, take a look at your sleep habits.
• Try to avoid caffeine in the late afternoon and evening, and don't rely on alcohol to help you get to sleep, particularly if you're breastfeeding.
• Make sure your bedroom is a serene and comfortable space, not too hot or too cold.
• Ban tablets and phones at bedtime, and try not to fall asleep to the TV, if you have one in your bedroom.

• Brightly colored board books are a good way to get her attention, but she loves your voice so much that she may even be happy to listen to you reading a shopping list!
• One of the best ways to encourage your baby's language development is to read to her whenever you can.
• What you read doesn't matter as much as how often you do it.
• So try to find something you enjoy, and curl up for some special story time with your baby whenever you can.
