84 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your baby is 84 weeks old (20 months). Your toddler is learning how people behave, and copying it back in miniature. For you, around 19.5 months. The "I do it myself" phase is starting, independence is gold, and exhausting. Here is your week, tracked.
Week 84
Your baby is 20 months old
Baby says this week
I am so inquisitive that I love to dismantle every toy that you get for me, Mummy. Every time I fail when I try to put them all together but I enjoy doing it because that keeps me busy. I love talking on the phone with my favorite aunt but all I can do is nod or will shake my head in response to every question. I get intrigued by toys that contain a hidden surprise like jack-in-the-box, shape fitters, and nesting blocks.
Your Toddler's Development
2 min read
Your toddler is learning how people behave, and copying it back in miniature.
At around 20 months, your toddler may make animal sounds ("moo", "woof", "meow"), repeat a single favourite word a hundred times, follow two-step instructions ("pick up the cup and give it to papa"), and start trying out "please", "thank you" and "sorry" after a lot of modelling from you.
Things that sometimes help- Animal sound books and simple picture cards are a hit now.
- Say "please" and "thank you" to your toddler, not just to adults. They learn from how you speak to them.
- Two-step instructions stretch their memory in a good way. Keep it short and kind.
- Most toddlers can pull off socks, hat and unbuttoned pants before they can put anything on. Undressing is the first step towards dressing, let them do as much as they can manage without rushing. Simple fasteners help: elastic waists, Velcro shoes, big buttons.
- Toddlers love the bathroom, toilet paper that unspools, water that runs, a flush that goes whoosh. Never leave a toddler alone with water. A toddler can drown in less than 5 cm of water in a bucket, tub or open toilet. Keep the bathroom door closed and the toilet lid down when not in use.
- If your toddler refuses food and water for more than a day, has blood in their stool, or has no bowel movement for 3+ days with hard pellets, call your pediatrician.
A wobbly "tank you" offered at just the right moment can melt a whole hard day. These sweet imitations are 20 month old baby milestones that show how closely you are watched and how deeply you are loved. The kindness in your voice is slowly becoming the kindness in theirs.

Around 19.5 months. The "I do it myself" phase is starting, independence is gold, and exhausting.
Letting toddlers do small things themselves
At 19–20 months, many toddlers want to:
- Pick up their own spoon
- Put on their own shoes (slowly, wrong foot, takes 10 minutes)
- Drink from a cup without help
- Carry their own bowl (and possibly drop it)
Letting them practice, slowly, messily, builds independence faster than rushing.
Things that often help
- Allow extra time. A 5-minute task takes 20 minutes when toddler does it.
- Set up the environment for success, chunky cups, easy-on shoes, washable surfaces.
- Praise the effort, not the result.
- Don't redo their work in front of them.
For mum's energy
This phase is mentally tiring, you have to slow down, watch patiently, accept mess. Build in your own rest:
- A 5-minute pause between tasks
- A quick stretch or breath
- Something playful to look forward to in your own day
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks. Iron-rich Indian basics, bajra, palak, jaggery, kala chana.
Indian-context note
- In joint families, multiple adults sometimes step in to "help" the toddler too quickly, especially grandparents who find the mess hard. A gentle conversation about letting the toddler try first helps everyone.
Worth flagging
- If your toddler shows extreme frustration that escalates to harm (head-banging, severe self-injury) or never wants to try independently, mention it to the pediatrician. Most are normal range; some benefit from early input.
Indian-mum tradition kept
- Letting toddlers help with rolling rotis, picking out small stones from dal, washing rice, small Indian kitchen tasks build patience for them and slow life down for you. The roti will be lopsided. The kitchen will be messy. Both are fine.
The slow shoe, the wrong foot, the spoon held upside down: letting them try takes more patience than doing it yourself ever did. Build in your own pauses, because this stage draws deeply on a mother's reserves, and mother self care is how you refill them. The mess is temporary; the confidence you are growing is not.
Care That Grows With You

By week 84, your toddler is independently hydrating between meals. The 210ml sipper handles full water portions, spill-free design means no nursery spills, soft-tip is gentle on emerging molars. Indian summer + active toddler = more water in fewer refills. Try Mylo Baby Sipper 210ml that:
- 210ml: Full-Portion Size.
- Spill-Free, No Nursery Spills.
- Soft-Tip, Molar-Friendly.
A toddler who reaches for their own water is a small, shining sign of all your steady teaching. Parenting a toddler is mostly this: quietly building little independences, one sip at a time. Notice these small graduations; they are yours as much as theirs.

Eighty-four weeks postpartum and the body has been through three Indian summers. A cocoa-and-shea cream after the evening shower is your way of saying thank you to the skin that grew, fed, and is still showing up. Faint marks, soft skin, daily ritual. Try Mylo Stretch Marks Cream that:
- Cocoa Butter + Shea Blend.
- Daily Body Moisturiser.
- Non-Greasy, Soft Finish.
Saying thank you to your own skin is a lovely habit to have kept. Small evening rituals like this are mother self care in its gentlest form: a minute that says you matter too. The body that did so much deserves a lifetime of that gratitude.
