73 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your baby is 73 weeks old (17 months). Your toddler is sorting people into "mine" and "not-mine" this week, and it shows. For you, around 17.5 months. By year 2, "self-care" can become another to-do item rather than actual rest. Here is your week, tracked.
Week 73
Your baby is 17 months old
Baby says this week
My newfound play area is the drawing-room of our house because I love to climb up the furniture and I think cushions are my new toys. It's so much fun and i love scrambling over the sofa and bouncing on the cushions. When you put on some music, I love to jiggle around with you Mummy. I can sing along some familiar nursery rhymes with you as well. I love to do self-talking when I am playing because I am enjoying my little fantasy world. Now when I recognize myself in the mirror, I love to make cute expressions. I have caught you many times when you're capturing multiple shots of my funny moves.
Your Toddler's Development

Your toddler is sorting people into "mine" and "not-mine" this week, and it shows.
At around 17 months, your toddler may suddenly cling at the sight of strangers, then warm up and run to familiar faces with hugs and kisses. Don't force introductions. Let them watch from your lap first.
Small signs of empathy- Your toddler might bring their favourite soft toy to a crying sibling, pat your face if you look sad, or offer a bite of their food. Praise these moments gently: "That was kind." Empathy is built one tiny act at a time.
- Shaking the head for "no" (often before the spoken no)
- Pointing to tell you what they want
- Pretending to feed a doll or toy, the first real pretend play
Pretend play is cognitive gold. A spoon becomes a microphone; a box becomes a car. Go with it. Ask them "what's the dolly eating?" to stretch the story.
Language milestones this month- Most toddlers at 17 months have 5–15 clear words, follow simple instructions, point at named body parts, and copy new sounds. If your toddler has no words, doesn't point, and doesn't respond when you call their name, mention it at the next well-visit.
- If your toddler refuses food and water for more than a day, has blood in their stool, or has no bowel movement for 3+ days with hard pellets, call your pediatrician.
The day your toddler pats your cheek because you looked sad, you will know what all the patience was for. Small acts of kindness and pretend tea parties are 17 month old baby milestones of the sweetest kind. The empathy blooming in them was planted by yours.

Self-care that isn't a chore
- Real self-care is whatever genuinely fills your tank, not what looks good on social media. For some mums it's a walk. For others it's a long phone call. For others it's silence in a parked car.
A rough self-care quiz
- After this activity, do I feel calmer? More energised? More like myself?
- Or do I feel emptier, more tired, or guilty?
The first is real self-care; the second is performance.
Common Indian-mum forms that work
- Sunday morning mandir/gurudwara/temple visit
- A weekly oil massage at home
- A hot lemon-water in the morning before anyone else is up
- A walk in the park alone
- A long shower with a steel mug and warm water, meditative
Things that often look like self-care but aren't
- Doom-scrolling in bed. "Wine mum" trends, alcohol disrupts sleep and supply
- Buying things you don't need
- A skincare routine you do while resentful
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks. The Indian basics.
Worth flagging
- If nothing feels like it fills your tank, even things that used to, that may be anhedonia (loss of pleasure), a quiet PPD sign. Worth a conversation with a therapist. Treatment is straightforward; you deserve to feel like yourself again.
An Indian-tradition self-care moment
- A monthly (or even quarterly) full body abhyangam, warm-oil massage at home or at an Ayurvedic centre, is restorative on a deep level. It is one of the few self-care practices that costs little and pays back richly. Sesame, coconut, or mustard oil all work.
Whatever fills your tank, a temple morning, a parked-car silence, a long call with an old friend, claim it without guilt. Honest mother self care is quieter than the internet makes it look, and only you know what truly restores you. Trust that knowing; it has carried you this far.
