7 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your baby is 7 weeks old. Your baby is looking less like a scrunched-up newborn and more like a real little person this week. For you, seven weeks in. If your gynae has cleared you, sex can be back on the table, at your pace, on your terms. Here is your week, tracked.
Week 7
Your baby is 7 weeks old
Baby says this week
I'm starting to understand my senses; I can look at a rattle and connect it to the sound it makes. I'm also becoming partial to color, preferring bright hues and three-dimensional objects over flat black and white ones.
Your Baby's Development

Your baby is looking less like a scrunched-up newborn and more like a real little person this week.
Your baby is likely to seem steadier and more alert when you hold them upright. They're also much more aware of sounds around them, bells, barking dogs, a whistle, the hum of a vacuum cleaner. Your baby may kick with excitement at a new sound, go quiet to listen, or cry if the sound is too much. Take note of which sounds seem to calm your baby down, you'll want to recreate them when nothing else is working.
Supervised tummy time- Keep giving your baby short, supervised tummy time stretches across the day, two or three sessions of a few minutes is plenty at this age. It builds the neck, shoulder and core muscles they'll later need for rolling and sitting. It also reduces the risk of flat spots on the back of the head.
- Always put your baby down to sleep on their back, on a firm flat mattress, with nothing else in the cot, no pillows, no blankets, no bumpers, no soft toys. This is the single biggest thing you can do to lower the risk of sudden infant death (SIDS).
You're doing great.
Watching your baby go still at the sound of a temple bell or a pressure-cooker whistle is watching a little mind switch on. Everyday sounds are the soundtrack of baby development, and your voice is still the track they return to most.

Seven weeks in. If your gynae has cleared you, sex can be back on the table, at your pace, on your terms.
Sex after birth, the honest version
- Most postpartum bodies are not "ready" the day clearance happens. Vaginal dryness from breastfeeding hormones, sensitivity at the perineum or C-section scar, fatigue, and an entirely different sense of your own body, all real. None mean something is wrong with you.
Things that often help
- A water-based lubricant, breastfeeding lowers estrogen, which lowers natural lubrication.
- Go slowly. Start with non-intercourse intimacy for a few sessions.
- Pee before and after; the urethra is more vulnerable to infection right now.
- If something hurts sharply or you bleed afterwards, stop and book a gynae visit.
Pelvic floor matters here
- Painful sex, urinary leakage when you cough or sneeze, or a heavy/bulging feeling in the pelvis, all signs the pelvic floor is asking for attention. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is increasingly available in Indian metros and is genuinely helpful. Daily kegels are a simple start.
Contraception conversation
- You can get pregnant before your first period back. If you are exclusively breastfeeding day and night, the Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM) is around 98% effective for the first 6 months, but conditions are strict. Otherwise, talk to your gynae about a copper or hormonal IUD, mini-pill (BF-safe), barrier methods, or partner methods.
A wider point
- Your relationship is allowed to feel different right now. Both partners are exhausted and changed. Talking honestly, not just about sex, is the longer game.
A note on patience
- Postpartum bodies often need 6 to 12 months for sexual sensation, comfort and desire to feel familiar again. The 6-week clearance just means it is medically safe, not that you should feel ready immediately. Rushing tends to create tension; slow tends to bring back closeness.
Tenderness with yourself is the truest pace-setter here. Intimacy, like every other part of postpartum recovery, returns in its own season; let yours arrive without a deadline and without apology.
Support You’ll Love Right Now

By week 7, you may notice yellowish flaky patches on your baby's scalp: cradle cap, very common and harmless. A weekly tear-free shampoo with mild surfactants softens the flakes without stinging the eyes. Massage gently with fingertips, never a comb. Try Mylo Tear-Free Baby Shampoo that:
- Tear-Free, No Eye Sting.
- Softens Cradle Cap Flakes Gently.
- Sulphate & Paraben-Free.
Cradle cap fades; the memory of these tiny bath times will stay. As you rinse those soft wisps of hair, let the warm water slow you down too; gentle hands deserve gentle moments.
