59 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your baby is 59 weeks old (14 months). Your toddler is communicating with their whole body right now, pointing, reaching, dragging you towards things they want. For you, around 14 months. Postnatal yoga or your old workout routine, possibly back on the table now. Here is your week, tracked.
Week 59
Your baby is 14 months old
Baby says this week
I have mastered the skill of saying bye-bye with an accompanying wave. I am confident enough to stand alone or walk even without your support Mumma and Daddy. I can easily get frustrated when you don't give me the things that I point out. I don't want to listen to your instructions because I want to crawl and walk more the way I like it. I learn to say NO to almost everything because I love my newfound independence and freedom.
Your Toddler's Development
2 min read
Your toddler is communicating with their whole body right now, pointing, reaching, dragging you towards things they want.
At this age, most toddlers have around 3–5 words and use gestures to fill in the rest. Gross motor skills are kicking in: trying to climb the first stair, cruising confidently, pushing themselves up to stand. Fine motor skills too, picking up small bits between thumb and finger (the pincer grasp), poking at buttons, turning the pages of a board book several at a time.
Things that sometimes help- Safe exploration: a low drawer full of safe things (wooden spoons, soft cloths, plastic bowls) that your toddler is allowed to empty and refill.
- Climbing practice on something safe, a couple of stacked cushions on the floor.
- Your toddler will head for the drawers, the dustbin and the cabinets. Cupboard latches on anything with cleaning products, sharp objects or medicines. Bin lids that close firmly. Keep handbags with medicines or loose coins up high, toddlers find everything.
- Your toddler wants to touch, taste and smell everything. Watch that nothing small enough to choke on is within reach, small batteries, coins, marbles and magnets are the biggest worries.
When your toddler drags you by the finger to show you something, you are being invited into their whole world. This wordless conversation is baby development at its most tender. Answer the tug when you can; to them, your attention is everything.

Exercise at 14 months postpartum
Most postpartum bodies have done the major healing work by now. What works at this stage:
- Walks of 30–45 minutes most days
- Postnatal yoga
- Iyengar, Hatha, Sivananda traditions all offer post-pregnancy sequences
- Light strength training, bodyweight, light weights, resistance bands
- Swimming if you have access
- Pelvic floor exercises daily
A diastasis recti recheck
- If you still have a gap of more than 2 fingers above or below the belly button, hold off on crunches and planks. A pelvic-floor-and-core physiotherapist can give targeted exercises.
Indian options
- Postnatal yoga online (Cult.fit, Sarvyoga, Zoom classes)
- Hospital pelvic floor PT (A trained therapist or specialist clinic can help. Carbs are fuel, not the enemy, bajra rotis, ragi parathas, idli, dal-chawal. Hydrate well; coconut water and jeera water are good additions.
Indian-mum flag
- "Lose the baby weight" pressure intensifies around year 1 in Indian families. Resist the rush. Sustainable fitness over 12–18 months is healthier than crash dieting that breaks your milk supply, mood and metabolism.
Worth flagging
- Pelvic pain during exercise, urinary leakage, or a heavy/bulging feeling in the pelvis, stop and see your gynae. Pelvic floor PT is the answer, not pushing through.
A note on Indian fitness habits
- A short Sunday morning yoga at home, a Saturday cycling round in the colony, a weekly badminton with neighbours, these informal habits compound over months. They cost less than a gym and are easier to maintain with a toddler at home.
Moving your body again is not about erasing the past year; it is about carrying yourself with strength into the next one. Choose movement that feels like mother self care rather than punishment. Your body kept a promise to your baby; now keep one to it.
