Baby says this week
I can now combine my words and gestures to convey what I need. I might get irritable, when you fail to decipher my actions, but I guess we will get better at this with time.
Your Toddler's Development
2 min read
Your toddler is using the world around them as a gym this week.
At around 12–13 months, most toddlers pull to a stand, cruise along furniture holding on, and may take a few unsupported steps. Some are already walking confidently, both are normal. Your toddler can also take objects in and out of containers, throw toys with surprising force, and make steady eye contact while playing with you.
Things that sometimes help- Leave a wide safe area for practice: sofa edges padded, sharp corners softened, rugs secured so they don't slip.
- A sturdy push-toy your toddler stands behind (a solid trolley or a laundry basket with a weight inside) is great for early walkers.
- Containers + safe objects = hours of play. Empty tupperware and wooden spoons beat most expensive toys.
- Look around from your toddler's eye level. Cupboard latches, plug covers, edge bumpers on sharp tables, and a baby gate at the top and bottom of stairs. Anchor tall furniture and the TV to the wall, a toddler pulling to stand on a bookshelf is how bookshelves fall.
Don't rush walking. Some toddlers walk at 10 months, some at 16. If your toddler isn't taking independent steps by 18 months, mention it to the pediatrician.
Watch for after a fall- Vomiting, unusual sleepiness, a swelling that keeps growing, or pupils that look uneven, head to the emergency room. Most bumps just need a cuddle and a cold cloth.
- Smooth marble or kota floors get slippery, a small rug at the play area, soft slippers indoors, and watch for the threshold strip between rooms. Open balconies are the biggest fall risk in Indian flats, grilles right up to ceiling height, always.
Your living room has become a training ground, and you are the coach, safety net and audience in one. Cruising, standing, those brave first steps: the 13 month old baby milestones unfolding around your furniture are stories you will retell for years. You built the world they are learning to walk through.

Around 13 months. Sleep at this stage is often less broken than it was, but rarely full nights yet.
A 13-month sleep reality check
- Some toddlers sleep 11 hours straight. Many wake once or twice. The variation is huge. Whatever yours does, the goal is to find a routine that works for your family.
Things that often help
- Consistent bedtime, give or take 15 minutes
- Wind-down routine: bath or wash, story, dim lights, soft song or lori
- Cool, dark room
- Last feed (if still on a feed) before, not during, the bedtime routine
For mum's own sleep
By 13 months, your sleep deficit is well over a year deep. Things that help recover it:
- Front-load your bedtime, try to be in bed by 10:30 even if you can't fall asleep instantly
- No phone in bed, the light pushes back your sleep hormone
- A cool bedroom, dim lights from 9 pm
- One full sleep night a week, where someone else handles a wake-up
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks. Magnesium-rich foods (almonds, spinach, jaggery, dark chocolate) often help sleep, eat them earlier in the day, not at midnight.
Indian-home wisdom
- A glass of haldi-doodh before bed is genuinely calming and anti-inflammatory. So is a 10-minute foot massage with warm coconut or sesame oil. These are not magic, but they are gentle ways to wind down the body.
Worth flagging
- If your toddler snores loudly, gasps, or pauses breathing during sleep, flag at the next pediatrician visit. Sleep apnea in toddlers is rare but treatable, and it affects daytime behaviour and growth.
A note on shared sleep
- Many Indian families co-sleep until age 3 or beyond. As long as the bed is firm and not crowded with pillows or quilts, this is safe and culturally normal. There is no medical pressure to move the toddler to a separate room until your family is ready.
A year of broken nights leaves marks no one else can see, so guard your rest like the treasure it is. An early bedtime taken without guilt is mother self care at its simplest. Sleep is not time stolen from your family; it is how you return to them whole.

Around week 56, your toddler tries new foods every week: some unsettle the tummy. A hing + saunf + ajwain roll-on warms the belly and eases trapped wind without crossing into the bloodstream. Roll clockwise around the navel before bed. Try Mylo Tummy Roll-On that:
- Indian Carminative Blend.
- Eases Gas From New Foods.
- Mess-Free Roll-On Format.
Every new food your toddler tries is a tiny adventure you made possible. On the nights you sit rubbing that little belly, remember that your steady presence is the real comfort. Be as patient with your own tired body as you are with theirs.

Week 56: chapped lips, dry hand patches, and itchy skin are common across seasons. Pure organic aloe vera gel is a multi-use saviour: lips, face, dry patches, and even gentle scalp soothing. Refrigerate for extra cool. Cools Indian summer prickly heat and AC-dry winter patches. Try Mylo Aloe Vera Gel that:
- Organic, No Preservatives.
- Cools Heat Rash Instantly.
- Light, Matte Finish.
Chapped lips and dry hands are small signs of a mother who has been busy caring for everyone else. Soothing your own skin, even for one cool minute, is a way of saying you count too. You do, more than you know.
