I am able to communicate with my actions and my expressions now. Keep talking to me and you'll be plesantly surprised at how I respond to your questions.
Your Toddler's Development
2 min read
Your toddler is starting to link sound and meaning, and it shows.
Around 12–13 months, most toddlers have one or two clear words beyond "mama" and "dada", often for favourite people or familiar objects. Gestures are just as important right now: pointing, waving, arms-up-to-be-lifted, tugging your clothes when they want your attention. These are the building blocks of language, and they come before a big vocabulary jump.
Your toddler also understands a lot more than they can say. Simple phrases like "where's your shoe?" or "come here" often land, even if the reply is just a look and a point.
Things that sometimes help- Narrate your day in short sentences: "Now we're washing hands. Water's warm."
- Name the thing they point at, then wait a beat. "Bird! Yes, bird."
- Read picture books together. The same three books over and over is fine, repetition is how words stick.
- Skip flashcards and apps. Real conversation with you beats any screen.
- By 12 months, most toddlers point, wave, turn when you say their name, and make eye contact. If your toddler rarely does any of these, mention it at the next well-visit. Wide range, but worth flagging.
- If your toddler does not startle to loud sounds or does not turn when their name is called from across the room, mention it at the next visit.
- Many Indian homes speak two or three languages. Your toddler may mix Hindi-English-regional words in one sentence, that is healthy code-switching, not confusion. Keep talking in whichever language feels natural; fluency in all of them comes with time.
The point, the wave, the arms stretched up for you: these little gestures are 13 month old baby milestones written in your child's own language. And notice who most of them are aimed at. You are not just watching this story; you are its favourite character.

The first toddler tantrums
- Around 12–15 months, frustrated wails over a wrong-coloured cup, a snatched toy, a "no" you said, early tantrums are normal. Your toddler has big feelings and very few words. The brain part that handles emotional control is years from being built.
What helps you stay steady
- Get to your toddler's eye level. A calm face slows the tantrum down.
- Name the feeling out loud. "You are angry. You wanted the red cup." Stay close, but don't try to reason mid-meltdown.
- Hug afterwards, when the wave has passed.
The harder part, your reaction
Tantrums hit a tired mum hard. Things that help your nerves:
- A 60-second pause before responding. Breathe in, count to 5, breathe out.
- A signal to your partner or family: "I need 5 minutes." Knowing it is not a reflection on your parenting.
Indian-home wisdom
- Many Indian families have several generations who have raised tantruming toddlers. Ask grandparents how they handled it, but trust your own judgment when the old advice doesn't fit. Modern parenting has more tools than fear-based discipline.
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks. Your blood sugar affects your patience more than people realise. A 4 pm chai-and-biscuit is fine; skipping lunch is not.
Worth flagging
- Tantrums that go past 25 minutes regularly, head-banging that breaks skin, breath-holding spells where your toddler turns blue, talk to the pediatrician at the next visit.
A reminder for joint-family mums
- If your toddler tantrum happens in front of in-laws or grandparents, you may feel an extra layer of judgment. Try not to perform, handle the tantrum the way you would alone, calmly. The watching adults will adjust their opinions over time.
Staying calm through a storm of small fists and big tears is some of the hardest, most invisible work of parenting a toddler. No one claps for the breath you take before you respond, so let this be your applause. Your steadiness is building their calm, one meltdown at a time.
Care That Grows With You

By week 54, baths are 15-minute splash sessions. A foldable Indian-bathroom-friendly tub with anti-slip base, sit-up backrest, and temperature dot keeps things safe while toddler tries to stand up. Folds flat behind the door. Try Mylo Foldable Bathtub that:
- Non-Slip Base, Bath-Safe.
- Heat-Sensor Dot Built-In.
- Folds Flat, Tucks Behind Door.
Splashed kurtas and wet floors are all part of parenting a toddler, and one day you will find yourself missing the puddles. Tonight, when the splashing ends, wrap your child up and take one deep breath for yourself. You turned an ordinary bathroom into a place of joy.

Week 54: winter is settled and skin, scalp, hands and a still-occasional baby massage all want the same thing. 100% pure cold-pressed virgin coconut oil works as a leave-in conditioner, body moisturiser, hand cream, and a baby massage oil. Try Mylo Coconut Oil that:
- Cold-Pressed, No Heat Used.
- Daily Mom + Toddler Use.
- Bottle Lasts 60-Plus Days.
One bottle that cares for your hair, your hands and your baby's massage: some things quietly serve the whole family, much like you. Let a spoonful of that care be deliberately for yourself; mother self care can be as simple as warm oil and five unhurried minutes.
