Two weeks from the year mark. This week's activity is Babble Conversation, all of it tracked below.
Week 50
Your baby is 12 months old
Baby says this week
You may be ready to collapse at the end of the day, but I'm too excited by my new accomplishments to sleep. During my last feeding, hold me in your arms in a darkened room and gently rock me while singing. This will help establish my bedtime routine.
Your Baby's Development

After months of babbling, your baby may be starting to form recognisable words, though many children don't say a first clear word until 12–15 months, which is still well within normal.
It's not an overnight process, and every baby does it at their own pace. Even if your baby isn't saying actual words, they probably understand a huge amount of what you say.
What first words often sound likeFirst words usually relate to the most important things in your baby's world:
- Familiar people: "mama", "dada", "didi", "dadi"
- Favourite pets
- Food and drink: "baba" for bottle, "nana" for banana
- Sleep: "nite-nite"
- Possessions: "ba" for bear, "ba-ba" for blanket
- Desires: "up!" or "more"
One word often means many things. "Joos" might mean "I want milk", "I dropped the cup", or "Give me that!", listen to the tone and watch the gestures, and you'll usually figure out which version your baby means.
Things that sometimes help- Reply in full sentences, repeating the word correctly. "Yes, that's a banana! You want the banana?"
- Point and name, pictures in books, people in the room, things you see outside
- Leave pauses so your baby has space to try a sound back
- Skip overcorrecting, never say "no, it's banana not nana". Just model the correct word and move on.
- If your baby isn't babbling, making eye contact, responding to their name, or pointing at things by around 12 months, mention it to the pediatrician. Early conversations never hurt.
- If your baby does not startle at loud sounds, does not turn towards your voice from across the room, or stops babbling, flag at the next pediatrician visit.
Whether the first clear word arrives this week or months from now, it will almost certainly be aimed at you. First words are the 12 month old baby milestones mothers wait for with their whole hearts, and yours is on its way. Until then, keep talking; every word you say is being lovingly collected.
Your Health & Lifestyle

Fifty weeks. Two weeks from the year mark. Your baby is on the cusp of toddlerhood, first words emerging, first independent steps possibly close.
Your year
- You have spent 50 weeks adjusting to this. Sleep, body, mood, identity, work, relationships, food, friendships, all rearranged. Some of this rearrangement is permanent; some is still settling. That is normal.
A self-check before the 1-year mark
A few questions worth sitting with:
- How are you sleeping? Are you waking refreshed at least 3 nights a week?
- How is your mood, most days?
- Are you eating real meals, sitting down, at least once a day?
- When did you last move your body for 30 minutes?
- When did you last do something just for yourself?
- When did you last see your gynae?
If most answers are unhappy, please book a doctor visit. The fix is usually a combination of bloodwork, a few sleep nights, real food, and possibly therapy.
Eating well, Indian basics
- Bajra and ragi rotis, dal-chawal with ghee, curd-rice, palak, methi, paneer, soaked almonds, dates. Boring is good when it works.
Looking ahead
- Year 2 is different. The intensity changes. The toddler is more independent, more verbal, more demanding in different ways. You have more bandwidth than you did at 6 months, even if it doesn't feel that way yet.
Worth flagging
- A persistent low mood at the 1-year mark, even a "manageable" one, is still PPD and still treatable. Talk to your gynae or a therapist. You deserve to feel like yourself again.
Indian foods that hold steady
- Through every postpartum season, the same boring Indian basics keep working, bajra rotis, dal-chawal with ghee, curd-rice, palak, methi, paneer, soaked almonds, dates. The grandmothers got this right. Trust the everyday thali; it does more for postpartum recovery than any wellness fad.
Sitting with those self-check questions honestly takes courage, and answering them is postpartum self care in action. You have spent fifty weeks reading your baby's every signal; you are allowed to read your own now. Meeting your needs is not selfish; it is maintenance for the heart of the home.

Activity This Week: Babble Conversation

2 min read
Having a 5-minute "conversation" with baby's babble, treating each utterance like real speech. By 11 months, babble is sophisticated, multi-syllable, varied tone, sometimes word-like. Treating it as conversation accelerates real speech.
How to do itSit face-to-face with baby. Wait for them to babble. Repeat what you heard, exactly. "Bababa!" "Yes, bababa!" Then reply as if it were real speech: "Oh really? Tell me more!"
Pause for baby's "answer". Continue the back-and-forth for 3–4 turns. Watch their delight.
What it builds- Speech foundation (the first words emerge from this conversational pattern), turn-taking, attention to language, and bonding.
- Mix in real words from your home language. "Bababa? Banana? Banana chahiye?" Sliding babble into real words is exactly how speech transitions.
- Papa's babble conversation is different from mum's, and dadi's is different again. Each builds richer speech foundation.
- After morning feed, after evening play, pick a time and stick to it. Predictable conversation builds anticipation and engagement.
- If baby has no babbling by 12 months, or has stopped babbling at all, mention to the pediatrician. Speech evaluation may be needed.
- Same time, same spot, same conversation pattern. Babies brighten up when the routine begins.
- Multiple babble-partners, papa, dadi, each builds different angles of speech foundation.
Those earnest babbled conversations will one day be words, and you may half-miss the mystery language you two shared. Talking games like this are 12 month old baby activities that cost nothing and give everything. Long before real sentences, your baby already knows the best listener in the world.
