5 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your baby is 5 weeks old. Your baby weighs around 4 kilos now (rough average, yours can be more or less). For you, five weeks in. Sleep is still chaotic, but the baby is starting to feel more like a person and less like a tiny stranger. This week's activity is Diaper-Time Chat, all of it tracked below.
Week 5

Baby says this week
This week, my movements become smoother and more purposeful, and those random jerky motions begin to disappear. Set aside time each day for my gentle mini-workout by slowly pulling me to a sitting position, or let me "fly" by resting her tummy-down on your forearm. Always support my head during movements.
Your Baby's Development
2 min read
Your baby weighs around 4 kilos now (rough average, yours can be more or less). Crying is still happening, but grunts, gurgles and coos are starting too, your baby is experimenting with the mouth, tongue and throat.
The best way to encourage more? Coo back. Match their sound for sound. Over time, this two-way "talk" is what leads to the first real "mama" or "dada".
Talking in full sentences matters too, narrate your day while changing diapers, feeding, bathing. Babies learn language by hearing it, even when they can't respond yet.
Supervised tummy time- Short sessions of tummy time a few times a day help build neck and shoulder strength, and reduce the chance of flat spots on the back of the head from lying on the back so much. Start with 3 to 5 minutes, always awake, always supervised. Stop when your baby gets fussy.
- Even with tummy time during the day, night and nap sleep stays on the back, on a firm flat mattress, with nothing soft in the crib. We're in the SIDS peak risk window right now (2 to 4 months).
- If your baby is not lifting their head during tummy time by 3–4 months, or feels unusually limp or unusually stiff, mention it at the next pediatrician visit.
Matching your baby coo for coo might be the sweetest duet you will ever sing. Simple sound games are 2 month old baby activities at their purest, and somewhere inside that babble, a first 'mama' is quietly taking shape.

Mental health check-in
- Around 1 in 5 Indian mums experience postpartum depression or anxiety, often between weeks 4 and 12, when family help is winding down. A short self-check (the EPDS, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale):
- Have you been able to laugh and see the funny side of things?
- Have you felt sad or miserable?
- Have you been anxious or worried for no reason?
- Have you had thoughts of harming yourself?
If the answers are pointing somewhere worrying, please tell your gynae at the upcoming 6-week visit, or sooner. It is treatable.
Birth trauma is its own thing
- If your birth was frightening, emergency C-section, prolonged labour, a baby who needed NICU, anything that felt out of control, you may carry birth trauma. It is different from PPD. It can show up as flashbacks, avoidance of doctors, intrusive thoughts about the birth. Birth trauma responds well to specialised therapy. Mention it specifically when you talk to a therapist.
Where to seek help in India
- Your gynae (most are familiar with PPD/PPA)
- A trained therapist or specialist clinic can help. Postpartum psychosis is rare but a real emergency.
A note on talking about it
- Mental health still carries stigma in many Indian families. Start with a doctor or a friend who has been through this. Online groups for Indian mums (Instagram, WhatsApp, Mompresso) are full of women who get it.
Naming a heavy feeling out loud is one of the strongest moves in all of postpartum recovery. However this week is treating you, you do not have to carry it alone; borrowed shoulders are still shoulders.
Picked for Your Journey

Week 5 is when many Indian families start daily oil malish for the baby: a tradition backed by paediatricians for sleep, digestion, and skin-on-skin bonding. A cold-pressed, fragrance-free oil with almond, sesame, and avocado is gentle from week 1 onwards. Try Mylo Herb Enriched Baby Massage Oil that:
- Cold-Pressed, No Mineral Oil.
- Aids Sleep, Digestion, Bonding.
- Almond + Sesame Indian Blend.
Warm oil, warm hands, and a tradition older than memory passing through you to your child. When the malish is done and your baby is drowsy and content, take one slow breath for yourself; keepers of rituals need rest too.

By week 5, your milk supply has settled and your old bras feel both tight and unsupportive. A good nursing bra opens at the cup with one hand for night feeds, has wide soft straps that don't dig into sore shoulders, and a wire-free band that won't pinch ducts. Soft enough for joint-family in-laws drop-ins on quick changes. Try Mylo Nursing Bra that:
- Wire-Free, All-Day Comfort.
- One-Hand Clip For Night Feeds.
- Wide Straps, No Shoulder Marks.
Comfort is no small thing when your body is working around the clock. Choosing what is kind to you is a quiet way of saying your ease matters; let that same kindness run through the rest of your day.

Your Baby's Vision
Vision is sharpening, but the world still looks flat, like a photo, not 3D yet. Building blocks lose all their depth, more like stickers than objects. Compare what you each see below.
Try This : Stack two blocks slowly in front of them. They'll see it as one flat shape, not two.

Activity This Week: Diaper-Time Chat

2 min read
Turning a 5-minute task you do 8–10 times a day into language-building gold. Every nappy change becomes an early speech moment. No extra time needed, no equipment, just your attention.
How to do itWhile changing baby's nappy, narrate everything you're doing: "Now I'm taking off the wet nappy. Time for a clean one. Lifting your legs. There we go. Clean baby." Use a soft, slightly higher voice, research shows babies prefer this "parentese" tone.
Make eye contact when you can. Pause for baby's coos and respond to them like real conversation.
What it builds- Language exposure, vocabulary foundations, secure attachment. Babies who hear thousands of spoken words a day in early months have larger vocabularies at age 2.
- Use your home language, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, whatever feels natural. Bilingual chatter is healthy. Indian aunties have always done this, narrating life to babies, and it's one of the best things you can do for early speech.
- What you say matters less than that you say it. Reading a label, describing the weather, complaining about the heat, all builds language.
- If baby is consistently floppy, doesn't open eyes, or never responds to voice or touch, call the pediatrician.
- A newborn gets ~10 nappy changes in 24 hours. Even half of those used as language moments adds up to 50+ minutes of focused speech exposure daily.
Who would guess that chatting through a nappy change counts as brain-building? The humblest corners of the day hold the richest baby development, and your running commentary, in any language, is your baby's favourite radio station.
