I have discovered that there's more to my world than what meets the eye on ground level. Climbing stairs and exploring furniture is irresistible, so be sure you've installed safety gates.
Your Baby's Development
2 min read
All the chatting, singing and reading to your baby is starting to pay off in a big way.
Many babies say their first recognisable word, often "mama", "dada", or a simple object name like "baba" for a bottle, between 10 and 14 months. Some take a bit longer, and that's well within the normal range too. If your baby hasn't said a clear first word yet, don't stress, keep the conversations flowing and the words will come.
Things that sometimes help- Describe the world in simple, specific words. "Soft cat. Grey cat. Purring cat."
- Use your baby's name when you talk to them. It helps build recognition.
- Read the same book over and over. Predictability is where little brains lock in words.
- Sing action songs together, clapping, waving, pointing.
By now your baby should be:
- Making eye contact and responding to their name
- Babbling in strings of sounds
- Pointing or reaching for things they want
- Copying simple actions like waving or clapping
If your baby isn't doing any of these things, or seems to have lost a skill they had before, flag it with the pediatrician at the next visit.
Teeth and brushing- Your baby's skin is less delicate than it was in the newborn days, but still sensitive. Bathe with lukewarm water, use a mild fragrance-free wash, and moisturise within a few minutes of patting them dry. Dry patches on the cheeks, scalp or behind the knees can be common now, a gentle baby-safe emollient usually sorts it, but show your doctor anything that's red, cracked or weeping.
- If your baby does not startle at loud sounds, does not turn towards your voice from across the room, or stops babbling, flag at the next pediatrician visit.
One day soon, a babble will turn into a word, and your heart will skip. This slow unfolding of baby development is built from every chat, song, and story you have shared. However long the words take, your baby has been listening to your love all along.

Forty-four weeks. Around 10.5 months. Your baby's first words may be emerging, and your own focus may be wandering back to the world beyond baby.
Returning to interests, hobbies, work
By 11 months, many mums find a small reservoir of brain space returning. Use it gently:
- Pick up something you used to love, reading, music, painting, a class.
- A part-time skill course, online or local, many mums upskill in this window before going back to work full-time.
- Reconnect with one or two friends, the kind of friendship that does not need explaining.
Indian-context note on identity
- Indian culture often prizes mum-self over individual-self for a long stretch. Both are valid. But your individual self is not gone, and tending to her makes you a steadier mum too. Hobbies, work, friendships, faith practices, anything that is yours, it counts.
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks. Iron-rich daily. The boring Indian basics still apply, bajra, ragi, palak, methi, paneer, curd, dal, soaked almonds, dates, jaggery in small amounts.
Skin and hair recovery
- Most mums see clearer skin and steadier hair by 11 months. If hair fall is still dramatic, a thyroid and ferritin check is worth doing.
Worth flagging
- If you find yourself unable to feel pleasure in things that used to make you happy, even after 11 months postpartum, talk to your gynae or a therapist. Anhedonia (loss of pleasure) is one of the more sneaky PPD signs and very treatable.
A note on staying connected
- A single trusted woman friend who you can call without explanation, that's worth more than 10 acquaintances. If your closest people have drifted during the baby year, deliberate effort to reconnect with one of them pays back over decades.
The woman you were before this year is still here, and she is allowed to grow too. Picking up an old hobby or calling an old friend is postpartum self care of the deepest kind. Tending to your own heart makes the love you give your baby even steadier.

Around week 44, winter dries baby skin fast and over-washing makes it worse. A mild 2-in-1 wash + shampoo cuts the bath routine, keeps moisture in, and is tear-free. Use 2–3 times a week, not daily. One bottle for Indian-bathroom space: no clutter on shelves. Try Mylo 2-in-1 Wash & Shampoo that:
- Tear-Free, No Eye Sting.
- Cuts Bath Routine In Half.
- Sulphate-Free, Paraben-Free.
Bath time in winter can feel like a race, and you manage it with so much patience. A shorter routine means more time for cuddles in a warm towel. Those few soft minutes afterwards belong to both of you.

Week 44: winter starts, the family is fighting colds, and your immune system is running on fumes. Wheatgrass is a plant-based iron, folate, vitamin C, and chlorophyll boost: a daily scoop in juice or warm water keeps energy steady through the season. Mix into nimbu-pani or warm jeera water for an easy daily habit. Try Mylo Wheatgrass Powder that:
- Plant-Based B12 + Iron.
- Daily Stable Energy.
- A Scoop In Warm Water.
Cold season with a small child asks a lot of you. Tending to your own energy is not selfish; it is what keeps the whole home warm. May this season bring you as much care as you give.
