40 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your baby is 40 weeks old (10 months). Your baby is understanding far more words than they can say, keep talking and keep it simple. For you, forty weeks postpartum. This week's activity is Cup-Drop Game, all of it tracked below.
Week 40
Your baby is 10 months old
Baby says this week
As you go about your day doing seemingly mundane tasks, I'm intently watching you. I'm also starting to imitate you. If given the chance, I might take a toothbrush and run it across my teeth, or try combing my hair. Mimicking is an important way for me to learn.
Your Baby's Development

Your baby is understanding far more words than they can say, keep talking and keep it simple.
When your baby says "bah-bah", you can reply with something like "Do you want a bottle?", repeating the word back in its grown-up form without making a big fuss of correcting. That way, your baby hears the real word without feeling told off. Look them in the eye when you chat and leave little pauses so they can respond.
Things that sometimes help- Narrate the day. "We're putting on socks. One foot, two feet."
- Describe what you see when you're out. "Big bus. Red bus."
- Read short picture books, and point to each picture as you name it.
- Sing simple songs with actions. Itsy-bitsy-spider, clap-your-hands, ta-ta-bye-bye.
The thumb-and-fingertip pincer grasp is really coming on. Pincer-friendly foods are soft enough to squash between fingers and small enough to pick up but not small enough to choke on:
- Soft-cooked peas, sweet corn kernels, diced carrot or beetroot
- Small pieces of ripe banana, mango, papaya, soft pear
- Cooked pasta pieces, soft idli, pieces of paratha torn small
- Small cubes of paneer, well-scrambled egg
- Mashed dal or khichdi small enough to pinch
Avoid whole grapes, whole nuts, popcorn, hard raw apple or carrot, and big chunks of meat or cheese. And always sit your baby upright to eat, and stay within arm's reach.
Those pauses you leave after a question are little doorways for your baby to walk through. Language grows in this everyday back-and-forth, the gentlest kind of baby development. Your voice, your patience, your eye contact, that is the whole classroom.
Your Health & Lifestyle

Forty weeks postpartum. Symbolic moment, you have now spent as long with your baby outside the womb as you did with them inside.
A pause
- Forty weeks is the same length as a typical pregnancy. Your body has done a year and a half of building, birthing, healing, feeding, and adjusting. Take a beat to acknowledge the work.
The next 3 months, looking ahead
- Most mums find months 10–12 are gentler than the earlier ones. Sleep is more predictable, baby is more independent, you have a rhythm that mostly works.
A few things worth setting up before the 1-year mark
- Book your own annual gynae checkup if you haven't.
- Plan the baby's 12-month visit (vaccines + cow's milk transition + iron testing).
- If you are planning a second pregnancy, a gap of at least 18–24 months between births reduces complications. Talk to your gynae about timing.
Eating well, still
- Three meals + two snacks. Iron-rich daily. Calcium daily. Vit D supplement if tested low.
For your relationship
- A weekly date, even a 30-minute walk or chai together after baby is asleep, pays back over months. Sex is whatever pace works for you both.
Worth flagging
- If you've been pushing through exhaustion for 9–10 months and it is not getting better, talk to a doctor. Untreated anaemia, thyroid imbalance, vitamin D deficiency, or PPD/PPA can run for months and erode quality of life. All four are easily diagnosed and treated. You deserve to feel like yourself again.
A small Indian-mum note
- The baby's first 1000 days (from conception to age 2) are sometimes called the most important window for development. They are also a window of intense work for mum. Take credit for the work. The next 1000 days will need a healthier you.
Forty weeks out, forty weeks in, what a journey your body and heart have made. Postpartum recovery is not just physical healing; it is this slow, brave rebuilding of yourself alongside your baby. Stand in front of the mirror today and thank the woman looking back.
Essentials for Your Journey

Activity This Week: Cup-Drop Game

2 min read
Letting baby drop a small cup or block from height to discover gravity. 5 minutes, just a small soft object and a clear floor. By 9 months, babies LOVE dropping things and watching them fall. This activity gives them a safe, focused dropping ritual.
How to do itSit baby in a high chair or on your lap. Hand baby a small soft cup or block. Wait. Most babies will drop it intentionally, looking down to see where it goes.
Pick it up calmly, hand it back. Don't get exasperated, this is real cause-effect learning, not naughtiness. Repeat 5–10 times.
What it builds- Cause-effect understanding (when I let go, it falls, every time), gravity awareness, sensory feedback, and the science-curious brain.
- Use a small wooden block, a soft fabric ball, or a steel katori (which clinks delightfully). Indian kitchens have plenty of safe, washable objects.
- Yes, picking up the dropped item 10 times in a row is annoying. But this is real learning, baby tests gravity until it's confirmed. Be patient.
- Drop something soft (no sound), drop something light steel (sound!), baby learns different objects make different effects.
- If baby never drops or releases objects intentionally by 12 months, or has no interest in cause-effect, mention to the pediatrician.
- It seems repetitive but each drop is real learning. Baby is testing, not being naughty.
- Marble or kota stone amplifies the sound of falling objects, baby loves the noise. A soft mat under high chair muffles it for your peace.
- Makes mealtime more engaging.
Handing back that dropped katori for the tenth time takes a special kind of love. Little science games like this are classic 10 month old baby activities, and your patience is the secret ingredient. One day you will miss that cheerful clink; smile at it today.
