4 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your baby is 4 weeks old. Your baby is gaining 100 to 200 grams a week now (formula-fed babies sometimes more). For you, four weeks in, one whole month with your baby. Here is your week, tracked.
Week 4

Baby says this week
Have you noticed me using my vocal chords in ways other than crying? I may coo and make "ahh" sounds this week, especially when I see mom or dad. Babies learn by mimicking, so replay my sounds back to me.
Your Baby's Development

2 min read
Your baby is gaining 100 to 200 grams a week now (formula-fed babies sometimes more). By week 4 you might catch a first social smile, that first real "I see you" smile, often during a feed or eye-contact moment.
Your baby still communicates mostly through crying, and you'll start telling the different cries apart:
- Short, low, pleading = hungry.
- Whiny, nasal, continuous = tired or uncomfortable.
- Bursts of crying with fussy whimpers = bored or wanting attention.
- Sudden, loud, panicked wail = in pain or scared.
Getting the cry right takes a few weeks of trial and error. It becomes second nature.
Cluster feeding spike- Around weeks 3 to 6, many babies feed almost non-stop in the evenings. It is a normal growth-spurt pattern, not a sign of low milk. Stay hydrated, snack between feeds, and let your partner take the burping shifts.
- Back to sleep, firm flat mattress, alone in the crib. No pillows, bumpers, blankets or toys. The next few months are the highest SIDS risk window, don't cut corners on this one. Room-share (same room, separate bed) is linked to lower risk.
- Daily oil malish, warm cotton swaddle, soft lori at sleep time, the rhythms our families have used for generations also help babies feel secure.
- Book your pediatrician for the 6-week visit if you haven't already. The 6-week IAP shots cover DPT, hepatitis B, Hib, polio, PCV and rotavirus, early booking helps at busy clinics.
- If your baby is unusually limp, unusually stiff, doesn't make eye contact at all, has a deep yellow tinge past day 14, or makes very high-pitched continuous crying, flag it at the pediatrician visit. Most one-month babies are perfectly fine; a quick check is still worth doing.
Learning to tell one cry from another is a language course no university offers, and you are passing it in real time. That first knowing smile is among the most treasured 1 month old baby milestones, mostly because it is usually addressed to you.
Your Health & Lifestyle

Four weeks in, one whole month with your baby. Pause and notice that.
Postpartum back pain is at its peak this week for many mums, from carrying the baby, hours of feeding in awkward positions, hormonally loosened ligaments and the still-stretched abdominal wall. The perineum or C-section scar is still healing too. No vigorous exercise yet, pelvic floor and core need a few more weeks before you load them.
Posture quick fixes that help
- Use pillows or a feeding cushion to bring baby up to breast height, not your back down to baby.
- Heat pack on the lower back for 15 minutes at a time.
- Stand up and roll the shoulders every couple of feeds.
- A gentle morning walk (10–20 minutes) restarts circulation and lifts mood.
Indian tradition: oil massage for mum
- Many Indian families do a daily warm sesame or coconut oil massage for the new mum (and baby) for the first 40 days, by family, a maalishwali, or yourself. Done gently, it eases sore muscles, helps sleep, and is one of the few times a postpartum body gets purposeful care.
Worth flagging
- Lower-back pain that radiates down a leg, leg pain or swelling on one side, severe headache that does not respond to rest and water, or fever above 38 °C, call your doctor. A blood clot in the leg (DVT) is a real postpartum risk for around 6 weeks.
The 6-week checkup is coming
- Book it now if you have not already. Ask about contraception, your mood, your scar, anything that has been bothering you.
Small ritual that helps
- A daily warm-water bath with a few drops of any baby-safe oil, or a soak with neem and tulsi leaves, is a calming Indian ritual that doubles as gentle self-care. Five minutes of warm water on the lower back can do more for sore muscles than another painkiller.
A month of feeding, lifting, and rocking is heavy work, even when it is done for the lightest person in the house. Rest your back the way you rest your baby, deliberately and often; postpartum recovery is built from these small acts of self-respect.

Your Baby's Vision
Your baby can't see colour yet, but high contrast pops. A bold black and white panda is sharp; a pastel teddy nearly disappears. That's why those cards work like magic. See below.
Try This : Print a bold black and white pattern. Hold it 25 cm away and watch them stare for ages.
