Week 38
Your baby is 9 months old
Baby says this week
Around 38 weeks, I will leave a trail wherever I go. I may pull books off shelves and clear cabinets of their contents. I'll also happily tip over wastebaskets. Though it's tiring for you to constantly clean up after me, this inquisitiveness is a natural part of my development.
Your Baby's Development

The endless stream of words your baby has been soaking up is starting to pay off.
Your baby's babbling is sounding more and more like real words, phrases and little sentences. But what's really impressive is how much they now understand. Your baby probably knows the names of favourite people, toys and foods, and can follow simple questions and requests.
Things that sometimes help- Ask real questions you're okay with either answer to. "Do you want the banana or the pear?" is a good one. Skip "Do you want to go to bed?" if bed is the only option, because a "no" sets everyone up for a battle.
- Keep the language simple and clear. One instruction at a time works best.
- Pause and let your baby respond, even if the answer is just a gesture or a babble.
If you haven't done a full mobility sweep of the house yet, now is the moment:
- Cabinet locks on anything holding medicines, cleaners or sharp tools
- Outlet covers on all sockets within reach
- Anchor bookcases, dressers and televisions to the wall
- Stair gates top and bottom
- Table-corner bumpers on sharp edges
- Nothing smaller than a toilet-paper roll on the floor (choking-size test)
- Hot drinks, kettles and cooking pans well out of reach, a spill from above is how most toddler scald injuries happen
- Cords from blinds and curtains tied up (strangulation risk)
- Buckets and tubs emptied, babies can drown in even a few centimetres of water
One room at a time. You don't have to do it all today.
Worth flagging- If your baby is not lifting their head during tummy time by 3–4 months, or feels unusually limp or unusually stiff, mention it at the next pediatrician visit.
Your baby understands so much more than they can say, especially the warmth in your voice. This listening stage of baby development means every kind word you speak is landing somewhere deep. A safe home and a loving voice, you are giving both.

Thirty-eight weeks. Around 9.5 months. Your baby is on the brink of standing, walking, real first words. The energy demands keep climbing.
Mum exercise, building back gently
By 9 months postpartum, your body can take more. Gentle progression:
- Walks of 30–45 minutes most days
- Postnatal yoga (Iyengar, Hatha, or Sivananda traditions all have safe postpartum sequences)
- Pelvic floor exercises daily (kegels: squeeze and hold 5 seconds, release; 10 reps × 3 sets)
- Strength: 5–10 minute sessions with light weights or bodyweight, 2–3 times a week
- No high-impact running, jumping, or heavy lifting until pelvic floor is solid
Diastasis recti check before any core work
- Lie on back, knees bent. Lift head slightly. Press fingers above and below the belly button. A gap wider than 2 fingers = avoid crunches and look for a pelvic-floor-and-core physiotherapist (now in most Indian metros).
Indian options for working out
- Postnatal yoga online (Cult.fit, YogaBar, Zoom classes)
- Hospital-based pelvic floor PT (A trained therapist or specialist clinic can help. Carbs are not the enemy, bajra rotis, ragi parathas, rajma-chawal, idli, dal-chawal all give clean energy. Avoid the "low-carb postpartum" trend; your body needs the fuel.
Worth flagging
- Pelvic pain during exercise, urinary leakage, a heavy/bulging feeling in the pelvis, that is a stop signal. Talk to your gynae for a pelvic floor PT referral before continuing.
Worth booking
- If you have not yet had a single physiotherapy session for pelvic floor in your postpartum journey, this is a good moment. Even one session with a trained pelvic floor PT can give you exercises that change how your body feels for the next decade.
Coming back to strength is a journey of small, steady steps, just like your baby's. Honouring your postpartum recovery with gentle movement is an act of respect for all your body has done. Go slowly and proudly; there is no finish line to race for.

Your Baby's Vision
Peripheral vision is still lagging. When your baby focuses on a toy, the rest of the room kind of disappears from view. See what they miss below.
Try This : Hand them a toy, then quietly wave from the side. They probably won't notice you.
