Your baby is 9 months old
Baby says this week
If you haven't already, look around the house and put dangerous objects safely out of my reach. My curiosity is boundless and my mobility gets me around further and faster.
Your Baby's Development

Your baby's memory is getting sharper week by week.
Your baby is starting to remember specific things, where favourite toys are kept, which cupboard has the biscuits, what happens when you pick up the car keys. They may even be able to copy an action they saw you do a week or two ago. Long-term conscious memory for specific events doesn't really develop until age 2 or 3, but repetition is laying the foundation now.
Things that sometimes help- Repeat, repeat, repeat. Words, songs, actions, your baby picks up something new each time.
- Use daily routines as memory hooks: the same bath-time song, the same bedtime story, the same goodbye wave.
- Name familiar people and objects out loud: "That's dadi. Wave to dadi!"
- Book the 9-month well-baby visit when it fits, anywhere between 8.5 and 9.5 months is fine. The doctor will check weight, length, head size, feeding, and development. The 9-month MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine is usually given at this visit.
- Crawling, pulling up, cruising, somewhere on the mobility ladder
- Babbling with real intonation
- Responding to their own name most of the time
- Pointing or reaching toward things they want
If your baby doesn't respond to their name, isn't making eye contact, isn't babbling, or seems to have lost skills they had before, mention it to the pediatrician at the 9-month visit. Early conversations never hurt.
Hearing check worth flagging- If your baby does not startle at loud sounds, does not turn towards your voice from across the room, or stops babbling, flag at the next pediatrician visit.
Your baby remembering where the biscuits live is proof of a busy little mind at work. Memory grows through repetition, and in baby development, your daily routines are the gentle teacher. The bath song, the bedtime story, the goodbye wave, these are the first memories of home.
Your Health & Lifestyle

Thirty-seven weeks postpartum. Around 9 months. Periods often return around now if breastfeeding has tapered.
The first period back
- The first few periods after birth can be unpredictable, lighter, heavier, longer, shorter, more crampy than your usual. This is normal. Your body is rebooting its cycle.
- Track the next 3–4 cycles to see what your "new normal" looks like.
- Stock up on more pads than you think you'll need.
- Iron-rich foods help recover the small amount lost (palak, methi, dates, jaggery, kala chana).
When to see your gynae
- Soaking through a pad in under 2 hours
- Bleeding lasting more than 7 days
- Severe cramping that does not respond to a heat pack and rest
- Blood clots larger than a 5-rupee coin
- Bleeding between periods
Contraception revisit
- If your period is back, ovulation has already happened. If you are not yet on a contraception plan, this is the moment to talk to your gynae. Options: copper IUD, hormonal IUD, mini-pill (BF-safe), barrier methods. Pick what fits your body, your breastfeeding plan, and your family planning.
Eating well, ongoing
- Three meals + two snacks. Iron-rich daily. Vitamin D supplement if tested low.
Worth flagging
- Severe period pain that did not exist before pregnancy, irregular cycles after 3–4 months, or persistent spotting between periods, ask your gynae about endometriosis screening, fibroid check, or a pelvic ultrasound. None are emergencies, all are worth ruling out.
A note on bleeding patterns
- First few cycles after the period returns are often unpredictable. The body is rebooting. By cycle 3 or 4, most settle into a new normal. Track the dates and flow on a phone app, it makes future gynae visits much easier.
Worth a thought
- Your cycle may also be different from before pregnancy, sometimes lighter, sometimes heavier, sometimes more crampy. None of that is automatically wrong, just different.
Your body keeps writing its own story of change, and it deserves patience through every chapter. Tracking, resting, and asking questions at the gynae are all part of postpartum self care. Listen kindly to your body; it has been listening to you all year.
