31 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your baby is 31 weeks old (8 months). Your baby is getting better at showing love this week, and it is completely melt-worthy. For you, thirty-one weeks postpartum. Here is your week, tracked.
Week 31
Your baby is 8 months old
Baby says this week
My hands have likely evolved from little paws to little tools. Instead of clumsily grabbing things, I'm learning how to manipulate my thumb and forefinger to pick up and hold objects. Be extra vigilant about keeping choking hazards off the floor and away from my curious fingers.
Your Baby's Development

Your baby is getting better at showing love this week, and it is completely melt-worthy.
Your baby is starting to copy the little ways you show affection, blowing kisses, patting a cheek, leaning in for a snuggle. When you see them act sweetly with a soft toy or family member, give them plenty of warm praise; that feedback helps the behaviour stick.
What's changing now that solids are in- Now that your baby has started solids, you'll probably notice poo changes, it's firmer, smellier and a new colour (often green, brown or orange, depending on the food). Iron-fortified cereals can make stools darker. This is all normal.
- Constipation: firm, pellet-like poo or straining hard is common when solids first start. Offer extra water in a cup with meals, and plenty of fruit, prunes, ragi and cooked vegetables.
- Diarrhoea: more than a few very loose, watery stools in a day needs a doctor's call, especially if your baby is also vomiting or refusing feeds.
- Blood in poo or persistent black tarry stools, call the pediatrician.
- If your baby has fewer than 4 wet nappies in 24 hours, a sunken soft spot on top of the head, dry lips, very few tears when crying, or is very limp and hard to wake, call the doctor right away. These are signs of dehydration.
- A steady squint past 4 months, eyes that do not track moving things, a white reflection in flash photos, or pupils that do not react to light, get an eye check.
That first sloppy kiss on your cheek will stay with you far longer than any photograph. Amid all the 8 month old baby milestones you are tracking, the way your baby leans into you is the one that needs no chart. Love, it turns out, is the skill they learn fastest, because you taught it first.

Thirty-one weeks postpartum. Around 7 months. Many baby's emotions are getting bigger, and so are the affection signals, kissing your face, hugging, offering you their soggy biscuit.
Affection runs both ways
The way you respond to your baby's affection teaches them what love looks like. Cuddles, eye contact, kind voice, slow touch, these are the building blocks of secure attachment. Indian families often have many caregivers (grandparents, aunts, helpers)
- multiple secure attachments are healthy, not confusing.
Watch out for a phantom return of postpartum bleeding
- Some mums see a small return of light bleeding around 7–8 months postpartum, especially as breastfeeding patterns change or weaning starts. This is often the first period coming back. But sustained heavy bleeding, large clots, or bleeding accompanied by pain or fever, call your gynae.
Eating for the long haul
By 7 months, many mums slip into a "feed the baby first, eat something later" pattern that erodes nutrition. Try to plate up a real meal at the same time as you feed the baby. Indian options that work even when distracted:
- Curd rice with achaar
- Two parathas with ghee + a dal-spoon
- Idli-sambhar
- Khichdi with sabzi
Hair fall update
- If hair fall has been going strong since month 3, it should be tapering by now. Massage with warm coconut, almond, or amla oil 2–3 times a week. If it is still dramatic at 9–12 months, ask your gynae to test thyroid (TSH), iron (ferritin) and Vitamin D, these affect hair more than people realise.
Worth flagging
- A breast lump that does not soften after a feed or a warm shower, persistent breast pain, redness, or bloody discharge from a nipple, book a gynae or breast clinic visit. Most lumps in BF mums are blocked ducts, but ruling out the rare exceptions early matters.
Every cuddle you return and every soggy biscuit you graciously accept is quietly shaping how your child will love for life. And while you pour all this tenderness outward, your own postpartum recovery deserves the same patient, unhurried attention. Let yourself be cared for the way you care.
