Week 29

Baby says this week
While I'm not ready to host dinner parties, I'm eager for some more sophisticated ways of socializing. I'm fond of peek-a-boo and other group games. Play with me more often.
Your Baby's Development

Everything is going in the mouth right now, and that is exactly how your baby is supposed to learn.
Your baby uses mouthing to figure out shape, texture and temperature. Most of what ends up in there is harmless, but this is also the week to walk around your home looking for small objects at baby height.
Baby-proofing this month- Check the floor at eye-level: coins, safety pins, pen caps, earring backs, buttons, beads, small toy parts.
- Button batteries (from remote controls, toys, watches and car-key fobs) are seriously dangerous if swallowed, keep them locked away and check that battery compartments on toys are screwed shut.
- Magnets, especially small round ones, are a big risk, keep well out of reach.
- Plastic bags, cling film and balloon scraps are choking and suffocation risks.
- Houseplants: many common ones (money plant, peace lily, oleander, lantana, ornamental chillies) are toxic if chewed. Move plants up high.
- Pets: never leave your baby alone with any pet, no matter how gentle.
- If your baby has swallowed something unknown, is coughing or drooling heavily, refusing to feed, or has trouble breathing, head to the emergency room. For button batteries or magnets, go straight to the ER, even if your baby looks fine.
You can't watch every second. But the fewer hazards at baby-height, the easier it gets.
An Indian-kitchen note- Around 6–8 months, soft mashed daal-rice, ragi porridge, mashed banana or stewed apple are gentle starter foods. Add a small spoon of ghee for fat absorption. No salt, no sugar, no honey under 12 months.
All that mouthing and grabbing is your little explorer studying the world the only way they know how. Walking the house at knee height is simply love in a practical disguise, one more way you make room for baby development to unfold safely. Your alertness is what gives them the freedom to be curious.
Your Health & Lifestyle

Twenty-nine weeks postpartum. Past the halfway mark of the first year. Worth pausing to look at your own basics.
Self-care that actually works at 7 months
- Stay hydrated
- 3 litres a day if breastfeeding. A steel jug at your nursing chair or desk is the simplest reminder.
- Move daily, a 30-minute walk in the park, a yoga class, swim if you have access. Movement is the fastest mood lever.
- Sleep recovery, even one full 7-hour night a week (with a partner or family taking the night feed) makes a difference. Do it if you can.
Reconnecting with your partner or close people
Both of you are tired and stretched. Small rituals matter more than grand gestures right now.
- A 30-minute uninterrupted chai or coffee, no phones, after baby is down.
- A walk together while a family member watches the baby.
- A weekly "us" check-in, even 15 minutes, to talk about more than logistics.
Eating well, Indian basics
- Three meals + two snacks. Iron at every meal (palak, methi, bajra, jaggery, kala chana). Calcium daily (curd, paneer, milk, ragi, sesame). A vitamin D supplement if your gynae has tested low.
Worth flagging
- A persistent low mood, anxiety that does not switch off, or thoughts of harming yourself or the baby, call your gynae or a therapist today. Phone counselling is widely available in India. Mental health support is medical care, not a personal weakness.
Indian-mum tradition revisited
- A weekly haldi-doodh, a monthly oil-massage day, a Sunday breakfast that is just for you, these small rituals are not luxuries. They are how generations of Indian mums have kept themselves intact while running households. Reclaim what works for you.
The steel jug, the evening walk, the one full night of rest: these small acts are the architecture of postpartum self care. Tend them the way you tend your baby's routines, with patience and without guilt. A mother replenished has so much more of herself to give, and to keep.
