28 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your baby is 28 weeks old (7 months). Your baby still can't really manage a spoon, but that won't stop them trying to run the whole meal. For you, twenty-eight weeks. If your maternity leave is wrapping up, this is the transition month for many Indian mums. This week's activity is Comfort-Toy Hug, all of it tracked below.
Week 28
Your baby is 7 months old
Baby says this week
By week 28, I'm using my hands in more sophisticated ways, I may start to clap or imitate you when you wipe off my food tray. I may be ready to start feeding myself, too, so give me soft finger foods (be sure they aren't choking hazards).
Your Baby's Development

Your baby still can't really manage a spoon, but that won't stop them trying to run the whole meal.
Your baby may refuse to be fed, grab the spoon out of your hand, or lunge for whatever is on your plate. It can be frustrating when half the meal ends up on the floor, but this is a great sign, your baby is figuring out independence.
First foods, safe finger foodsScatter a few soft pieces on the highchair tray and let your baby go for it. Gums do a great job, even before teeth.
- Steamed and well-cooked vegetable sticks (carrot, beans, sweet potato)
- Small broccoli or cauliflower florets, soft-cooked
- Soft banana or ripe pear slices
- Soft mashed daal-rice, ragi porridge, mashed banana
- Small pieces of soft roti, idli, or paneer
- Whole grapes, cherry tomatoes, blueberries (always halve or quarter)
- Whole nuts and seeds
- Chunks of hard raw fruit and vegetables (apple, carrot)
- Popcorn, hard boiled sweets, marshmallows
- Chunks of meat or cheese
- Sticky blobs of nut butter (thin it into porridge instead)
- For a severe allergic reaction (trouble breathing, swelling of lips or face, vomiting with a full-body rash), go to the emergency room right away. For milder reactions, call your pediatrician the same day.
Stay close and stay calm, your baby needs you within arm's reach at every meal.
The mess on the floor is really independence in the making, even if it rarely feels that way mid-mop. Grabbing the spoon and lunging for your plate are 7 month old baby milestones in their own right, small declarations of a person taking shape. One day you will miss the flying khichdi, just a little.

Twenty-eight weeks. If your maternity leave is wrapping up, this is the transition month for many Indian mums.
Returning to work, practical setup
- Pumping schedule: 2 sessions in a typical workday (mid-morning + mid-afternoon).
- Maternity Benefit Act 2017 protects your right to nursing breaks for 15 months and a creche if your office has 50+ staff. Most need a polite reminder to HR.
- A small cooler bag with ice packs, a pumping shawl or scarf for privacy, and clear bottles labelled with date and time.
- Express milk lasts 4 hours at room temp, 24 hours fridge, 6 months in deep freezer.
The handover at home
- Whoever is the day caregiver, partner, parent, in-laws, helper, daycare, needs a clear playbook. A simple A4 sheet on the fridge with feed times, nap times, soothing tricks, allergies, doctor and emergency numbers is gold.
Mum guilt is universal
- Mums who go back to work feel guilty. Mums who stay home feel guilty. Mums who do part-time feel guilty. The guilt is real but rarely deserved, your baby benefits from a mum who is doing what fits her family. Please tune out judgment from anyone who is not living your life.
Worth flagging
- The first week back at work is hard for many mums. If anxiety is so heavy you cannot eat, sleep or focus, or you find yourself crying through the workday for more than 1–2 weeks, talk to a doctor. Postpartum anxiety can show up sharply when routines change, and it is treatable.
A note on shifting routines
- Returning to work shifts more than the work hours. Your body's rhythm changes when meal times shift, when nap times go, when commute eats your morning. Give it 4–6 weeks to settle into the new normal, energy and mood will dip first, then rebuild.
Walking out the door that first morning may be one of the hardest things you have done, and doing hard things is now your quiet speciality. Be as patient with your feelings as you are with your postpartum recovery; both take their own winding time. Whatever shape your days take, your baby's world still turns around your love.
Essentials for Your Journey

By week 28, bath time is play time: splashing, sitting up, exploring water. A 2-in-1 body wash + shampoo cuts your bath routine in half. Tear-free, paraben-free, mild on baby skin and scalp. One bottle, head to toe. One bottle for Indian-bathroom space (no clutter on shelves). Try Mylo 2-in-1 Body Wash & Shampoo that:

Splashy baths become some of the happiest minutes of the day, for both of you. May the time you save find its way back to you: a longer chai, a quiet pause in the doorway, a breath that belongs to no one else.

Activity This Week: Comfort-Toy Hug

2 min read
Introducing a soft "lovey" (small cloth, soft toy, or familiar item) that baby can self-soothe with. 5 minutes once or twice a day. By 6–8 months, many babies form attachment to a comfort object. This activity nurtures that, useful for sleep, separation anxiety, and self-regulation.
How to do itPick a small soft cloth or toy, small enough to grip, breathable, washable. Snuggle baby with it during a calm cuddle. When baby is settled, leave the toy near them. Make sure baby touches and explores it.
Use the same toy every day. Wash it but keep it in baby's life. Many babies pick "their" lovey on their own, observe what they grab.
What it builds- Self-soothing, secure attachment, sleep transitions, and resilience during separations.
- A piece of mum's old soft cotton kurta, a knotted dupatta corner, a small soft cloth doll (kapde ki gudiya), all work. Many Indian grandmothers have made cloth dolls for generations. Keep it small and simple.
- If baby attaches strongly to one item, quietly buy or make an identical backup. The day the original goes missing or needs a deep wash, you'll thank yourself.
- Small breathable lovey is generally considered safe in cot from 6+ months. Avoid pillows, quilts, plush toys with small parts.
- If baby seems to attach to nothing and cannot self-soothe at all by 12 months, mention to pediatrician.
- Multiple loving caregivers often means multiple comfort objects, that is fine. Some babies attach to one item; others have several. Both healthy.
- The lovey at bedtime becomes a sleep signal. Powerful self-soothe tool by 12 months.
There is something tender about watching your baby curl their fingers around a scrap of your old kurta. Of all the 7 month old baby activities you will try, this one carries your scent and your softness into the moments you cannot be there. A little cloth, a lot of you.
