Your baby is 26 weeks old (6 months). Somewhere around now, your baby may fall hard for a specific soft toy or blanket, welcome to the age of the comfort object. For you, twenty-six weeks. Your baby is becoming their own little person with clear preferences, and some of those preferences might be hard on you. Here is your week, tracked.
Week 26
Your baby is 6 months old
Baby says this week
I'm still a charmer, but I may be selective about giving smiles to strangers. I may even be afraid to be away from you. To help soothe my anxieties and make partings less sorrowful, try leaving shortly after a feeding. Stick to your schedule and establish a "goodbye" routine to give me a sense of security.
Your Baby's Development

Somewhere around now, your baby may fall hard for a specific soft toy or blanket, welcome to the age of the comfort object.
Getting attached to a "lovey" is a sweet sign that your baby is starting to feel like their own person. It's also a brilliant tool for self-soothing at naptime and bedtime. If your baby picks a favourite, consider quietly putting aside an identical back-up, you'll thank yourself the day the original goes missing or needs a wash.
The 6-month well-visit- The 6-month pediatrician visit usually includes a height-weight-head-circumference check, a developmental screen, and an iron-deficiency conversation (common in Indian babies once breastfeeding tapers and solids start). Your doctor may also start the seasonal flu shot here. Bring up anything you have been wondering about, feeding, sleep, sitting, sounds.
- Pre-crawling: lots of babies this age are rocking on hands and knees, rolling across the room, or commando-shuffling on their tummies. Crawling itself usually shows up anywhere from 6 to 10 months, and some babies skip it entirely.
- Sitting: by around 6 months many babies can sit with minimal support for short stretches.
- Stranger anxiety: you might see the first flickers of it now, a wary face or a sudden clinginess when someone new comes close. It's a healthy sign that your baby knows who is familiar.
- At this age a small, breathable lovey in the cot is generally considered safe by most guidelines, but keep pillows, quilts and bumpers out. Back to sleep, firm flat mattress, everything else a minimum.
- If your baby is not lifting their head during tummy time by 3–4 months, or feels unusually limp or unusually stiff, mention it at the next pediatrician visit.
A baby who loves a lovey is a baby learning that comfort can be carried, and that lesson began in your arms. As you tick through 6 month old baby milestones at the well-visit, take a second to notice how much you have both grown. Half a year of mothering already lives in your hands.

Twenty-six weeks. Your baby is becoming their own little person with clear preferences, and some of those preferences might be hard on you.
Separation anxiety hits the mum too
- Around now, your baby may start crying when you leave the room, refuse handover to your partner or grandparents, and want only you. This is healthy, your baby has now figured out you are a specific person they want.
But it is hard. You cannot bathe in peace. The bathroom door cannot close. You cannot cook a 30-minute meal. The "I just need 5 minutes" plea is real.
Things that often help
- Practice short separations even when not needed. 5 minutes in another room. 10 minutes on the balcony. The baby learns you always come back.
- Let your partner or main caregiver handle bath, change, or one feed routinely so the baby builds comfort with someone other than you.
- A consistent goodbye phrase ("Mama is going to make tea, back in 5") signals predictability.
Indian joint-family bonus
- In a joint family, your baby usually has multiple loving caregivers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, helpers. This is genuinely protective against extreme separation anxiety because the baby has learnt that safe = many people, not just one.
Take the small wins
- A 30-minute window when grandparents take the baby for a walk. A nap that lasts an hour. A friend dropping by with chai. These add up.
Worth flagging
- Severe anxiety on YOUR side about leaving the baby, to the point of not eating, sleeping, or functioning, is treatable postpartum anxiety. Talk to your gynae or a therapist.
Being the most wanted person in the house is exhausting and extraordinary at once. Claim those small windows, the walk, the nap, the chai with a friend, as honest postpartum self care rather than stolen time. The baby who cries for you is also the baby learning, every single day, that you come back.
