21 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your baby is 21 weeks old (5 months). Your baby is getting sharper at watching the world this week, and a lot more fun to play with. For you, twenty-one weeks. Childcare planning gets sharper as your baby gets older and more aware. This week's activity is Towel Slide Ride, all of it tracked below.
Week 21
Your baby is 5 months old
Baby says this week
I'm on the go as I reach five months. I may creep around the floor and turn my direction to get a new view. Put me on the floor or in a playpen and let me entertain himself (while keeping a close eye, of course!)
Your Baby's Development

Your baby is getting sharper at watching the world this week, and a lot more fun to play with.
Your baby is getting better at tracking small, moving objects, and may be starting to realise that things still exist even when they're hidden, the first glimmer of object permanence. Peek-a-boo is brilliant for this. You may also see the first real attempts at copying you: stick out your tongue, puff your cheeks, make a surprised "O" face, and watch your baby try.
Things that sometimes help with gas and fussinessA lot of babies swallow air while feeding, and some go through a fussy evening stretch that can feel endless. Most of this settles on its own by around 4–5 months. What actually helps:
- Burp during and after every feed, over your shoulder or sitting upright on your lap.
- If bottle-feeding, check the teat flow isn't too fast.
- Hold your baby upright for 15–20 minutes after a feed.
- Gentle tummy massage in a clockwise circle, or "bicycling" the legs.
Skip gripe water, ghutti, brandy, honey or hing on the tongue, these aren't safe for babies and aren't needed. If your baby is inconsolable for hours, isn't feeding well, has blood in the stool, or just seems unwell, call your doctor.
Safe sleep reminder- Back to sleep, firm flat surface, empty cot. Still the most important habit at this age.
- A steady squint past 4 months, eyes that do not track moving things, a white reflection in flash photos, or pupils that do not react to light, get an eye check.
- Around 6–8 months, soft mashed daal-rice, ragi porridge, mashed banana or stewed apple are gentle starter foods. Add a small spoon of ghee for fat absorption. No salt, no sugar, no honey under 12 months.
The long gazes, the belly laughs, the first clumsy kiss: your baby is falling in love with you out loud. These tender flickers are baby development at its warmest, and no chart could ever measure them properly. Keep making the silly faces; they are building a bond for life.

Twenty-one weeks. Childcare planning gets sharper as your baby gets older and more aware.
Choosing childcare in India, practical lens
- Family caregiver (grandparent/aunt): free, deeply loving, sometimes generation-gap on advice. Lock in agreement on key safety rules (no honey before 12 months, vaccines on schedule, no sugar/biscuits before 1 year).
- Domestic helper-cum-aaya: trial slowly. References from someone you actually know matter more than agency promises. Train them on safe sleep, no propping bottles, no shaking, no folk remedies you do not approve.
- Day-creche: trained staff, structured day, social exposure. Visit at random times before signing up. Look at the cleanliness, the staff-to-baby ratio, how babies are responded to when they cry.
- Nanny via agency: middle ground. Check background, ask for written work history.
Watch for during the trial
- Does the caregiver respond to crying within a minute? Do they hold the baby comfortably? Do they put baby down on the back to sleep? Do they wash hands before feeds? Trust your gut on the small things.
Build a 2-week handover
- Have the caregiver come for full days while you are home. Build their familiarity with your baby's routine, signals, soothing tricks. A handwritten note (or WhatsApp doc) on baby's typical day, feeds, naps, and emergency numbers helps everyone.
Worth flagging
- If anything feels off during the trial, a slap, harsh language, baby unusually upset after handover, that is a no, immediately. Trust the instinct.
A note on instinct
- If the new caregiver is checking all the boxes on paper but something feels off, listen to that. Babies pick up on caregivers' moods quickly, and so do mums. A second trial week or a different person is always an option.
One small thing
- A baby monitor (audio or video) gives many mums their first proper rest. Not because the caregiver is untrustworthy, but because your nervous system finally lets go.
Handing your baby to another pair of arms may be the bravest thing you do this month. Trusting your instincts, and letting yourself truly rest once you do, is part of postpartum self care as well. The love you have built travels with your baby into every safe pair of hands.
Your Care Essentials

By week 21, your baby is heavier and longer, and short outings, kitchen multitasking, and grocery runs are easier with a carrier. A 3-in-1 carrier with hip-seat support, padded shoulder straps, and front + back + face-out positions grows with your baby till 15+ months. Try Mylo Baby Carrier that:
- Hip-Seat + Padded Lumbar.
- 3-In-1: Front, Back, Face-Out.
- Grows With Baby Till 15 Months.
Carried close, your baby feels your heartbeat, and something in both of you settles. Whatever the errand, wherever the walk, you are your baby's favourite view of the world.

Five months postpartum, your stretch marks are at the long-fade stage: silvery, less raised. A bio-oil-style blend with rosehip, vitamin E, and almond keeps elasticity up while marks lighten further. Twice daily on belly, hips, breasts, thighs. Try Mylo Stretch Marks Oil that:
- Bio-Oil Multi-Vitamin Blend.
- Long-Game Mark Maintenance.
- Pump Bottle, One-Hand Use.
Those silvery lines have their own quiet dignity; they are the marks of making room for someone. Tend to your skin the way you tend to everything else, gently and faithfully, and let the ritual remind you that your body deserves gratitude, not judgment.

Your Baby's Vision
The far stuff still wins. Birds outside, the fan above, dadda walking in from work, these beat any toy this week. See the side by side comparison below.
Try This : Open the balcony door and sit with them. Narrate what's out there, the birds, the trees.

Activity This Week: Towel Slide Ride

2 min read
A slow, steady tummy-down ride on a thick towel that gives baby a new sensation and strengthens neck/core muscles. 5 minutes on a clean carpet or rug. By 5 months, baby has decent head control and can handle this safely.
How to do itSpread a thick towel on a clean rug or carpet. Lay baby on the towel, tummy down. Make sure they can hold their head up. Grasp the corners of the towel near their head. Slowly pull the towel in a small circle, moving the entire towel-and-baby setup gently.
Go slow. Keep baby's face turned to one side and visible. Stop after 4–5 slow circles. Watch baby's face throughout.
What it builds- Neck and shoulder strength, vestibular input (balance), spatial awareness, and the muscles needed for crawling and sitting.
- A thick cotton bedsheet, dhurrie, or chaadar works as the "towel". Indian homes typically have these on hand. Carpet over kota stone or marble cushions any small bumps.
- Only on soft surfaces, never on hard floor without padding. Never on a bed or sofa (could roll off). Keep speed slow.
- If baby cannot hold their head up consistently while on tummy by 5 months, mention to the pediatrician. Head control is a key milestone marker.
- First week: short slow circles. Next week: a small change of direction. Don't speed up too fast.
- Babies who do this slow movement game often sleep better the same evening. Vestibular play is genuinely tiring.
A towel, a slow circle, and your watchful eyes: adventure at its gentlest. Playful rides like this are classic 5 month old baby activities, building strength while feeling like pure fun. Your careful hands are what make the bravery possible.
