2 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week

Week 2
Your baby is 2 weeks old
Baby says this week
I can focus on objects 8 to 14 inches away, about the distance between my eyes and yours during nursing. As you feed me, move your head slowly from side to side and see if I follow you. This helps strengthen my eye muscles and tracking skills.
Your Baby's Development

Your baby might seem to only eat, sleep and poop right now, but the brain is very busy. Babies cycle between quiet alert (watching), active alert (moving, making small sounds), crying, quiet sleep, active sleep, and drowsy. Watch carefully, and over time you'll learn your baby's signals.
By day 10 to 14, most babies have gained back any weight they lost at birth, sometimes more, whether they're breastfed or formula-fed.
Is baby feeding enough?- 6 or more wet diapers a day. 3 to 4 yellow, seedy poops a day in the first month if you're breastfeeding (formula babies may go less often). Feeding on cue, every 2 to 3 hours.
- Jaundice often peaks around day 3 to day 7 and can continue into week 2. Mild yellow usually clears up on its own. Call the doctor the same day if the yellow is spreading, your baby is sleeping much more than usual, or feeding is going badly.
- Should fall off in the next week or so. Keep it clean and dry until it does. Red skin, bad smell, or pus around the base, go to the doctor.
- Always on the back, always on a firm flat mattress, nothing else in the crib. This matters the most over the next few months.
- A cry that sounds high-pitched or weak, a baby who cannot be soothed for hours alongside fever or feeding refusal, or a baby who has gone very quiet and limp after lots of crying, call the pediatrician.
- Around 6–8 months, soft mashed daal-rice, ragi porridge, mashed banana or stewed apple are gentle starter foods. Add a small spoon of ghee for fat absorption. No salt, no sugar, no honey under 12 months.
Regaining that early weight is a milestone powered almost entirely by you, feed after patient feed. The earliest 1 month old baby milestones rarely make it into photo albums, but they are written into your tired arms and your full heart all the same.
Your Health & Lifestyle

Two weeks in. The baby blues, those waves of teary, overwhelmed feelings that hit most new mums in the first 14 days, are usually peaking now and starting to ease.
Your body is busy. Lochia is changing colour from bright red to brownish to pink. After-pains are settling. Breasts are figuring out supply and demand. Hair, skin, mood, sleep, all in flux. Take it one feed at a time.
Breastfeeding troubleshooting
Latch issues, sore nipples, blocked ducts and engorgement are common in the first 2–3 weeks.
- A good latch should not hurt past the first few seconds. If it does, break suction (a clean finger in the corner of baby's mouth) and re-latch.
- Engorged, hot, lumpy breasts: feed often or hand-express, warm compress before, cold cabbage leaves between feeds.
- Cracked nipples: a smear of your own breastmilk after each feed is the best lanolin.
A note on cluster feeding
- Around days 7–10 and again around weeks 3 and 6, your baby may want to feed almost constantly for several hours, often in the evening. This is normal, it's how supply ramps up to match growth. It is not a sign you don't have enough milk.
Watch for mastitis
- A red, hot, painful patch on the breast plus fever and body aches needs antibiotics, not just rest. Call your gynae the same day.
Worth flagging
- Sadness that is not lifting, intrusive scary thoughts about yourself or the baby, or inability to sleep even when the baby is sleeping, these go beyond baby blues. Tell a doctor today, not next week.
A quiet note
- The second week is when many mums hit a wall. Visitors keep coming, the body is still healing. It is okay to ask people to come back later, or to send a "come after 40 days" message. Protecting your rest is not rude.
Guarding your rest from a full guest list is not rudeness; it is postpartum self care with a firm, loving voice. The visitors can wait a little; right now, the person who most needs your protection is you.

By week 2, baby's first proper hair wash usually happens. Newborn scalp can show flaky cradle cap by week 2 to 3: a mild tear-free shampoo with milk protein softens flakes without stinging. One or two washes a week is enough for newborn skin. Try Mylo Tear-Free Baby Shampoo that:
- Tear-Free, No Eye Sting.
- Mild Milk Protein Wash.
- Sulphate & Paraben-Free.
First hair washes are tiny ceremonies: a wet head smaller than your palm, a towel warmed and waiting. Let these firsts slow you down in the best way, and let the bath-time calm rinse away a little of your own tiredness too.

Your Baby's Vision
Colour means nothing yet. Your baby's world is pure black, white and shades of grey. Bright toys look the same as muted ones, so don't worry about that pink rattle. See for yourself below.
Try This : Hold a black and white card 20 cm from their face. Watch how they lock on like it's a magnet.
