I like to do more things by myself. I try to wash my own hands, and try to fee myself. I even try to get dressed on my own and put on my clothes.
Your Toddler's Development

Your toddler is starting to look after themselves in small, important ways.
At around 35 to 36 months, self-care skills expand. Washing hands with supervision. Pulling pants up and down. Brushing teeth (you finish the job). Taking off shoes. Putting a jacket on backwards. Wiping their own nose, sort of. Each of these is a small victory for independence.
Hand washing basics- Warm water and soap for about 20 seconds
- Sing a short song to stretch the time
- Focus on before meals, after the toilet, after outside play
- Step stool to reach the tap
- Loose clothes are easier (elastic waistbands beat buttons every time)
- Lay clothes out in the order they go on
- Let them try the easy bits (pull up pants, put on shoes) and you do the tricky bits
- Do not expect buttons, zippers, or tied laces yet, those take another year or two
- Twice a day, after breakfast and before bed
- Use a small smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) under 3 years
- Let your toddler try first, then you do a "second round" to get the missed spots
- Make it playful, sing a song, count the teeth, hunt for "sugar bugs"
- First dental visit is a good idea if you have not been yet
- Wiping after the toilet, using a fork without spilling, blowing the nose properly, all normal to still need help with. Your toddler is a beginner at being a human. Patience.
- A fever that stays above 38.5°C for more than 48 hours, refusing all fluids, unusual drowsiness, or trouble breathing, call your pediatrician right away.
A jacket on backwards and a proudly wiped nose are victories, even if the world never sees them that way. These everyday 2 year old milestones are built from your patience, repeated a hundred gentle times. Your child is learning to care for themselves because you first showed them how care feels.

Around 39.5 months. Your toddler wants to do everything themselves, but still needs help sometimes. Finding the balance is a skill.
What's happening for you
- Year-3 toddlers swing between fierce independence ("I do it") and sudden need for help. Adapting moment by moment is mum work.
Things that often help
- Let them try first
- Step in only when asked or when frustration escalates
- Praise the trying
- Don't redo their work in front of them
For mum's wrist
- Years of baby-lifting can leave wrist or thumb pain (De Quervain's). If it's bothering you, see a physio. A wrist brace and gentle exercises usually settle it within weeks.
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks. Calcium daily.
Worth flagging
- Persistent wrist or thumb pain that doesn't improve with rest, see a doctor. Postpartum musculoskeletal issues are real and usually fixable.
Indian-tradition tip
- Many Indian women carry babies on hips for years, protective in some ways, hard on hips and back in others. By year 3, gradually let toddler walk more, carry less. Your body needs the break.
Indian-mum reminder
- Year 3 is when many mums add a lot back, work, hobbies, friendships. Pace yourself. Adding too much at once burns you out. One change a month is sustainable.
A note for joint-family mums
- If you live with extended family, weekly small chats with your partner about logistics, boundaries and your own state matter. Without them, joint-family stress builds invisibly. 15 minutes once a week, in private.
An Indian-context family balance tip
- If joint family logistics are heavy, a weekly 15-minute private chat with your partner, about division of work, finances, child-rearing decisions, your own state, keeps things from building up. Without it, small grievances become big resentments.
Adapting moment by moment, helping then stepping back, is some of the most skilled work there is, even if no one hands out certificates for it. Parenting a toddler in year three means reading the room a hundred times a day, and you have become fluent. Give your wrists, and your heart, the rest they have earned.
Care That Grows With You

Sticky hands, surprise spills, dadi-nani visits: parenting a toddler keeps your bag full and your days fuller. Amid all that readiness for everyone else, keep one small pocket of the day ready for you. A calm cup of chai counts for more than it looks.
