I may exhibit emotions such as frustration, anger, guilt or shame at times. I often don't know how to put the same into words whenever something effects me but I want you to take care of me.
Your Toddler's Development

2 min read
Your toddler is feeling more emotions than they have words for, and the gap is where the meltdowns live.
At around 35 months, toddlers cycle through joy, frustration, pride, jealousy, silliness, sadness, and rage sometimes within the same ten minutes. They are also watching you closely to figure out what each feeling is called and how grown-ups handle it.
Putting words to feelingsNaming an emotion does not always stop it but it helps your toddler learn to manage it over time:
- "You are disappointed because the cartoon is over."
- "That was so exciting! Your body is buzzing."
- "You are frustrated. The puzzle is tricky."
- "You are missing papa. Me too."
A feeling is allowed; a behaviour might not be. The split matters:
- Anger is fine; hitting is not
- Frustration is fine; throwing the cup is not
- Jealousy is fine; snatching is not
This separation, "I know you are angry, AND we do not hit", is one of the most useful parenting tools you will find. It lets your toddler feel what they feel without being told they are bad.
You are their emotional mirror- Your face, your voice, your calm (or loss of it) all teach your toddler what feelings look like and what to do with them. Coping with your own frustration out loud, "I am feeling annoyed, I need a minute", is honestly one of the best lessons you can give.
- Tantrums going past 25 minutes regularly, head-banging that breaks skin, or breath-holding spells, mention these at the next pediatrician visit.
Being someone's emotional mirror is tiring, tender work, and you do it a dozen times before lunch. Naming big feelings out loud is among the deepest 2 year old milestones, even if it never makes the baby book. Your calm, offered again and again, is teaching a little heart how to steady itself.

Around 39 months. Big feelings, your toddler experiences and tries to express anger, sadness, jealousy, fear.
What's happening for you
- Helping toddler navigate emotions is year-3 mum work. They have words for some feelings, not all.
Things that often help
- Name feelings: "You're sad. You miss papa." Validate without indulging: "It's okay to be angry. Hands are not for hitting." Stay close during emotional storms
- Hug after, repair after
- Talk about your own feelings: "I'm feeling tired. I need a quiet moment."
For mum's feelings
- Year-3 mum-stress is real. Therapy works. Talk to someone if patterns feel stuck.
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks.
Worth flagging
- If your own emotional regulation feels broken, yelling, hitting, shutting down, that's a sign for therapy. Not a personal failing. Treatable. A trained therapist can help.
Indian-tradition tip
- Pranayama, anulom-vilom for calm, bhramari for soothing, simple breath observation, has centuries of Indian wisdom. 5 minutes morning and evening. Your nervous system rebuilds calm with practice.
Indian-mum reminder
- You're modelling emotional regulation. Your toddler learns from watching you handle big feelings. The repair after a bad moment is more powerful than the bad moment itself.
Indian-context tip
- Indian families often have unspoken rhythms, chai at 4, dinner by 8, family Sundays. Working with these rhythms saves energy. Fighting them costs energy. Notice what works in your home and lean into it.
Indian-mum life-stage reminder
- You are 2-3 years into mum life. The next 15+ years stretch ahead. Sustainable beats sprint. Build habits now that scale: real food most days, real sleep when possible, daily movement, weekly social or solo time, an annual full health check.
Holding space for small storms takes a well you must keep refilling. A few slow breaths before bed is mother self care that costs nothing and gives back plenty. The calm you are teaching your toddler begins in the calm you offer yourself.

Activity This Week: Emotion Naming

2 min read
Naming feelings as they happen. By 33 months, toddler can begin to name basic emotions.
How to do itWhen toddler shows feeling, name it. "You're sad. You wanted that." "You're happy! Look at your smile." Repeat through the day.
What it builds- Emotional literacy, self-awareness, and self-regulation foundation.
- Use home-language emotion words. Indian families don't always name feelings, this is generation-changing work.
- At the 3-year well-visit, mention any speech, motor, behaviour or social concerns. Early input works better than late.
- No separate session. Just deliberate naming.
- Happy, sad, angry, scared, frustrated, excited. 6 emotions to start.
- Multiple adults naming feelings, toddler builds richer emotional vocabulary.
- Same activity at roughly the same time daily for 1–2 weeks builds skills faster than scattered attempts. Toddler learning compounds with repetition.
- Multiple adults playing, dadi, papa, mausi, adds variety. Toddler builds adaptability.
- Make a face in the mirror. Name the feeling. "This is happy. This is sad." Toddler tries.
- "Khushi", "udaas", "gussa", "dar", mother-tongue feelings often land first. Use both.
- Toddlers who can name their feelings tantrum less. Real research backing this.
- "Use your words, not your hands" only works if toddler has the words.
- Khushi, udaas, gussa, dar, pyaar. Mother-tongue feelings often land first. Use both languages.
- Dadi emotional vocabulary often richer than ours. Let her name feelings too.
- At bedtime, ask how did you feel today. Toddler picks one feeling word. Simple practice.
- Use your words only works if toddler has the words.
Giving a child words for their feelings is generation-changing work, and you are doing it in two languages at once. Emotional vocabulary is the quietest kind of toddler development, invisible until one day they say "I am sad" instead of crying alone. When that day comes, you will know these small moments built it.
