Your Toddler's Development

Leave a gap in a familiar rhyme, and your toddler fills it in.
At around 34 to 35 months, toddlers start finishing sentences in books they know well, completing the last word of nursery rhymes, and repeating phrases from favourite shows and stories. This is big, it shows their memory, language, and sense of rhythm are all clicking together.
Making the most of this stage- Sing the same nursery rhymes daily, predictability is the point
- Pause on the last word so they can fill it in
- Do the actions along with the words
- Use familiar books as a starting point for pretend play
- Keep singing even when your toddler starts taking over
- Twinkle twinkle
- Baa baa black sheep
- Wheels on the bus
- Old MacDonald
- Head shoulders knees and toes (bonus: body parts practice)
- Any local lullabies or family songs
- Toddlers this age love silly rhyming, made-up words, nonsense phrases, rhymes with their name in them. You do not need to be a poet. Just "Riya, Riya, bananas and papaya" is plenty and they will ask for it twice a day for a month.
- If your family speaks more than one language, keep going in both. Toddlers sort them out. A slight delay or mixing of words ("dog kahan hai") is normal and resolves on its own. Reading and singing in both languages is a gift, research backs it up.
- Many Indian homes speak two or three languages. Your toddler may mix Hindi-English-regional words in one sentence, that is healthy code-switching, not confusion. Keep talking in whichever language feels natural; fluency in all of them comes with time.
Hearing your own rhymes come back to you in a tiny voice is one of parenthood's sweetest returns. Filling in the last word of a song may be the most musical of 2 year old milestones. Every verse you have sung on tired evenings was quietly building this little duet.
Your Health & Lifestyle

Around 39 months. Your toddler can complete familiar nursery rhymes, songs, and short stories. Their language is rich.
What's happening for you
- Reading aloud is rewarded, your toddler joins in, completes lines, requests favourites.
Things that often help
- Daily reading at bedtime
- Songs and rhymes throughout the day
- Indian language exposure if relevant
- Library visits or book swaps
For mum's reading
- Maintain your own reading. Even 10 pages a day. Phone reading doesn't have the same effect as books or e-readers.
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks. Brain food.
Worth flagging
- A toddler at 39 months who shows no interest in books, doesn't make eye contact during reading, or has lost language, talk to the pediatrician.
Indian-tradition tip
- Indian songs and rhymes for toddlers are abundant, "Lakdi ki kathi", "Machli jal ki rani hai", "Chanda mama door ke", regional folk songs. These pass down rich vocabulary and family memory.
Indian-mum reminder
- Stress management for you matters as much as toddler input. Mental load can pile up unnoticed. Yoga, walks, weekly social time, faith practice if it fits, all help. Daily basics keep you sustainable for the longer parenting marathon.
A small Indian-tradition note
- A daily 10-minute pranayama, anulom-vilom for calm, bhramari for soothing, simple breath observation, costs nothing, has centuries of Indian wisdom, and rebuilds calm in your nervous system. Add it morning or evening.
Indian-tradition reflective practice
- Many Indian families have weekly or daily reflective practices, temple visit, prayer, meditation, journaling, conversations with elders. These compound over a year into mental-health protection. Whatever fits your inclination, build one in.
Singing the same rhyme for the hundredth time is also singing your own childhood back to life. Parenting a toddler has a way of returning old songs to you with new sweetness. Keep a few pages of your own book going too; the reader in you deserves her chapter.
Essentials for Your Journey

Week 148: picky-eating fluctuates and a daily toddler-safe multivitamin gummy (D3, B12, zinc, iron) fills small nutrient gaps. Sugar-free, doctor-recommended, kid-friendly fruit flavour. Useful when toddler refuses dal, sabzi, and traditional Indian meals. Try Mylo Multivitamin Gummies that:

Picky days come and go like weather, and you keep setting the table with hope anyway. That steadiness, more than any perfect meal, is what nourishes a childhood. Feed yourself with the same faithfulness you bring to that little plate.

Activity This Week: Story Completion Game

2 min read
Toddler finishes a familiar story line by line. By 33 months, toddler knows favourite stories well.
How to do itRead a familiar book. Pause before the last word of each line. Toddler fills in. "The cow jumped over the...", toddler says "moon!"
What it builds- Memory, language, sequence, and pre-literacy skill.
- Indian regional rhymes work brilliantly. Pause before the rhyming word, toddler fills it.
- At the 3-year well-visit, mention any speech, motor, behaviour or social concerns. Early input works better than late.
- Bedtime story slot.
- Short lines first. Longer lines later.
- Multiple adults playing, dadi, papa, mausi, adds variety. Toddler builds adaptability.
- Same activity at roughly the same time daily for 1–2 weeks builds skills faster than scattered attempts. Toddler learning compounds with repetition.
- "Once there was a hathi who lost his way in the forest. And then..." Toddler takes over.
- Animal characters, simple problem, open ending. Toddler fills in.
- Whatever they say, run with it. The point is creative ownership, not literary craft.
- Same time daily for a week. Toddler starts looking forward to it.
- Use familiar Indian settings. The story is set in dadi village, the bandar lives on the peepal tree, the fish swims in the pond outside. Familiar context locks in.
- Let papa or chacha continue the story toddler started. Multi-author narratives are real Indian-family fun.
- Group story time requires the same skill. Toddler builds it at home first.
A story started by you and finished by a small, serious voice is a kind of magic no app can copy. Shared storytelling is one of those activities for 2 year old imaginations that turns bedtime into a lifelong love of words. In their tales, you will hear echoes of your own voice, retold with wonder.
