Week 146
Your baby is 2 years 10 months old

I can now point out to things or pictures when they are named. I know about the fan, the ceiling, I know your name too and love pointing at you when you say 'Who is your mom?'
Your Toddler's Development

2 min read
Point at a picture, and your toddler names it. Sometimes correctly.
At around 34 months, most toddlers can point to and name familiar pictures in books, animals, vehicles, everyday objects, family members. They remember what you called something yesterday and bring it up today. Their receptive vocabulary (what they understand) runs into the hundreds by now, even if their spoken words are still catching up.
Reading together at this ageBook time is one of the biggest brain-builders for this age group:
- Aim for 15 to 20 minutes total across the day
- Same books over and over is fine (and useful), repetition locks words in
- Let them turn the pages and "read" to you
- Point at pictures and ask: "What is this?"
- Do the voices and sound effects, silly is good
- Talk about the pictures, not just the words
- Simple stories with a clear problem and resolution
- Board books with flaps and textures
- Books about daily routines, bath, bedtime, eating
- Books with animals, vehicles, or a favourite character
- Rhyming books that invite joining in
- Pointing at a cow in a book and then pointing to one on a walk makes the connection click. "Remember the cow in our book? That is a real cow!" These small moments are how toddlers build the mental library that will carry them into preschool and early reading.
- If your toddler does not startle to loud sounds or does not turn when their name is called from across the room, mention it at the next visit.
The same book, requested again and again, is not repetition to your child; it is home. Reading together sits quietly among the best activities for 2 year old minds, and your lap is the best-loved seat in the library. The cow in the book, the cow on the walk, your voice connecting them: that is how a world gets built.
Your Health & Lifestyle

Around 38 months. Your toddler can name pictures, understand simple stories, and connect new words to objects.
What's happening for you
- Vocabulary is exploding. Your toddler picks up words you didn't know they heard. Be careful what you say (and how you say it).
Things that often help
- Read together daily
- Define new words
- Sing nursery rhymes
- Listen to your toddler talk, they teach you what's on their mind
For mum's listening
- Year-3 mum-tired sometimes shows up as half-listening to your toddler. Try to give 10 minutes a day of full attention, eye contact, no phone, real engagement.
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks.
Worth flagging
- A toddler at 38 months who can't speak in 3-4 word sentences, doesn't follow 2-step instructions, or has lost language, talk to the pediatrician. Speech evaluation is straightforward.
Indian-tradition tip
- Indian poetry, nursery rhymes in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Punjabi, Gujarati, passes down language naturally. Sing or recite a few daily. Pratham Books, Tulika Books have collections.
Indian-mum reminder
- The way you talk to your toddler shapes their language. Slow, clear, full sentences. Lots of vocabulary. The investment pays off for life.
An Indian-mum tradition kept
- A weekly oil massage, head, shoulders, lower back, with warm sesame, mustard or coconut oil. Done by yourself or family for 15-20 minutes. Indian aunties have known this is restorative for centuries. Modern medicine agrees.
Indian-context support note
Building a small support system that works for the longer journey:
- 1-2 close mum friends you can call without explanation
- A trusted gynae for body, a therapist for mind if needed
- Online Indian mum communities (Mompresso, Instagram circles, WhatsApp groups) for daily small things
- A weekly call with mother, sister, or close friend
Quality over quantity. 2-3 strong relationships matter more than 30 acquaintances.
Full attention on that chattering little face, phone away, eyes up, is worth more than an hour of half-listening. Parenting a toddler whose words are exploding means you are raising a storyteller. And a weekly call with someone who listens to you keeps your own story from going quiet.

Activity This Week: Object-Naming Mastery

2 min read
Testing toddler's vocabulary by pointing to and asking. By 33 months, toddler should name many everyday objects.
How to do itWalk through home. Point: "What's this?" Toddler names. Cheer. Repeat with more items.
What it builds- Vocabulary, listening, recall, and language confidence.
- Indian homes are vocabulary-rich, chowki, mandir, almirah, dabba, katori, chappal. Use whatever home language.
- At the 3-year well-visit, mention any speech, motor, behaviour or social concerns. Early input works better than late.
- Morning walk through home.
- Different family members ask, get different answers.
- Cultural objects (mandir, sankh, prasaad) are part of toddler's natural vocabulary.
- Same activity at roughly the same time daily for 1–2 weeks builds skills faster than scattered attempts. Toddler learning compounds with repetition.
- Multiple adults playing, dadi, papa, mausi, adds variety. Toddler builds adaptability.
- 10 household items in 60 seconds. "Chair, pankha, almirah, kitab, mez, pyaala, pankha, light..." Both languages.
- Use what's around, pankha, jhola, dabba, peeche-darwaza. Real items, not flashcards.
- Random pointing, random naming. No formal lesson, vocabulary builds in cracks.
- Note 5 new words a week toddler now uses. Quiet pride moment.
- Diwali brings diya, rangoli, mithai, patake. Holi brings rang, gulaal, pichkari. Eid brings sevaiyaan, namaaz. Each festival adds 5 to 10 words.
- Dadi or nana naming things in their regional language. Toddler hears Telugu, Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali variations.
- Ask what is that 10 times during a chai-time walk. Casual, not lessonish.
Chowki, katori, pankha: your home is a living dictionary, and you are its warmest teacher. Naming the everyday world is one of those 2 year old milestones that happens in kitchens and corridors, not classrooms. Every word they gather carries the sound of your voice inside it.
