Week 143

Baby says this week
I love counting. I like to count numbers from 1 to 20. It seems difficult for now but over time I think I maybe able to remember them all and one day help you with calculations.
Your Toddler's Development

Counting to three, then four, then five, your toddler is picking up the very beginnings of numbers.
At around 33 months, many toddlers can count up to five or ten by rote (the song version) but do not yet match each number to one object, that deeper skill comes closer to 4 years. They may know "one more" and "all gone". They may hold up two fingers when asked their age.
Early maths through daily lifeYou do not need worksheets or apps. Everything around a toddler is a counting lesson:
- Count steps as you climb them
- Count spoons while setting the table: "one, two, three"
- Share fruit slices and count: "one for you, one for me"
- Point to small groups of objects: "how many dogs do you see?"
- Sing counting songs, "five little ducks", "ten in the bed"
These words come alongside numbers and are often easier to grasp than exact counts:
- "You have more than me"
- "That is a big truck"
- "Only a little bit of rice"
- "Two more bites, then we are done"
- Real counting with meaning (knowing "three" means three things, not just saying the word "three") takes months of practice. Adding and subtracting is a skill for preschool and beyond. Recognising written numerals is also not a 2.5-year-old skill for most kids. If your toddler loves numbers, great. If they are more into trucks or dinosaurs, also great.
- Many Indian homes speak two or three languages. Your toddler may mix Hindi-English-regional words in one sentence, that is healthy code-switching, not confusion. Keep talking in whichever language feels natural; fluency in all of them comes with time.
Whether they love numbers or dinosaurs, the learning happens the same way: beside you, in ordinary moments. Counting steps and sharing fruit slices are humble activities for 2 year old learning, softer than any worksheet. Trucks today, sums someday; your lap remains the first classroom either way.

Around 37 months. Your toddler is starting to think with numbers, counting objects, recognising amounts.
What's happening for you
- Math, letters, simple concepts are taking shape for your toddler. You don't have to formally teach, natural exposure works.
Things that often help
- Count things during the day ("one, two, three apples")
- Sing counting songs and rhymes
- Read books with numbers
- Don't push formal learning at this age
For mum's intellectual life
- Your brain has been on autopilot for many tasks. Year 3 is a good moment to challenge it again, a course, a book, learning something new.
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks. Brain food daily.
Worth flagging
- If your toddler shows no interest in numbers or letters at 37 months, doesn't engage with simple concepts, or has lost skills, talk to the pediatrician. Most are normal range; some benefit from early input.
Indian-tradition tip
- Many Indian families introduce alphabets and numbers early through traditional songs, mythology, and play. "Ek, do, teen", "A for apple, B for ball", start in your home language. Bilingual literacy is a strength.
Indian-mum reminder
- At 37 months, your toddler isn't behind because they don't know letters. Don't compare to neighbour's kid. Within wide normal range, your toddler is fine. Pediatrician will flag if there's a real concern.
Indian-context exercise note
- Indian fitness traditions, yoga, surya namaskar, pranayama, kalaripayattu, dance, all accessible without equipment. 30 minutes most days. Online or local. Build it in slowly, sustainably.
Indian-tradition body care kept
- A weekly Sunday body care ritual, oil-massage, hair-mask, skin care, was a long Indian tradition before social media. It still works. 30-60 minutes once a week is genuinely restorative. Costs little. Pays back daily.
While your little one plays with numbers, your own mind is asking to be fed too. A book at night, a course long postponed, a new skill: that hunger to learn is mother self care for the brain. Feeding it makes you more yourself, and your child grows up watching a woman who keeps growing.

Activity This Week: Counting Fruits

2 min read
Counting fruits during meal prep or shopping. By 32 months, toddler exposed to numbers naturally.
How to do itLay out fruits, "one, two, three apples". Toddler watches and may join. During real meal prep, count rotis, count katoris.
What it builds- Number exposure, sequence, vocabulary, and pre-math.
- Indian fruits, mango, banana, papaya, chikoo, sitafal, perfect counting subjects. Indian markets have abundant fruit.
- At the 3-year well-visit, mention any speech, motor, behaviour or social concerns. Early input works better than late.
- Meal prep, shopping, cleanup, natural number exposure.
- Ek do teen char paanch, same numbers, your home language.
- Toddler not ready for math drills. Casual counting builds the foundation.
- Same activity at roughly the same time daily for 1–2 weeks builds skills faster than scattered attempts. Toddler learning compounds with repetition.
- Multiple adults playing, dadi, papa, mausi, adds variety. Toddler builds adaptability.
- Kela (banana), anar (pomegranate), aam (mango), santra (orange), seb (apple). Real-life counting practice.
- "Ek, do, teen...", pick up each fruit as you count. Tactile + auditory + visual all together.
- Numbers in mother tongue and English. Toddler stores both.
- Counting cups, dabbas, dal varieties, anything stackable in the rasoi works.
- Count diyas during Diwali, mangoes in summer, jamun in monsoon. Seasonal counting equals real-world maths.
- Dadi counting in mother tongue, papa in English. Toddler stores both number systems.
- Counting cups, dabbas, dal varieties. Anything stackable in the rasoi works.
Ek, do, teen over a basket of mangoes: numbers arriving through your voice, in your language, at your kitchen counter. Casual counting is one of the gentlest 2 year old milestones, learnt in laps and bazaars rather than classrooms. Years from now, maths will carry a faint smell of ripe aam and home.
