123 Week Old Toddler: Your Toddler's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your toddler is 123 weeks old (29 months). Welcome to the "why" phase. For you, around 30 months. Your toddler is asking "why?" about everything. This week's activity is Vertical-Line Drawing, all of it tracked below.
Week 123
Your baby is 2 years 5 months old
Baby says this week
Mummy, I love all the opportunities that you give me to play with my friends, siblings, and cousins like solving puzzles, open-ended play with crayons, play dough, and building blocks. Now I also like to go and meet my pediatrician for regular follow check-ups because I have become friends with the doctor and he/she give me a chocolate every time as well. I just don't understand Mummy, why do you make me eat those green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits every day?
Your Toddler's Development

Welcome to the "why" phase. You have been warned.
By 28 to 29 months, your toddler is not just curious, they are relentless. "Why is the sky blue?" "Why is the dog barking?" "Why do I have to wear pants?" Half the time they are not even listening to your answer; they just love asking. It is also the age of "I can do it myself", putting on shoes (wrong foot), pouring water (big spill), brushing teeth (mostly the toothbrush goes in the ear).
Handling the "why" floodYou do not need to have an answer for every question, and you do not need every answer to be perfect:
- Give a short, simple answer when you can
- Flip it back: "Hmm, why do you think?"
- "I do not know, let us look at a book about it" is a great answer
- It is fine to say "That is just how it is" sometimes
- The "I do it" phase is exhausting on a schedule. But every time your toddler does something on their own, however messy, it builds confidence. Build in extra time. Let shoes go on the wrong feet for a few hours. Let them pour their own water with a small jug. Step in when needed, not before.
- Many Indian homes speak two or three languages. Your toddler may mix Hindi-English-regional words in one sentence, that is healthy code-switching, not confusion. Keep talking in whichever language feels natural; fluency in all of them comes with time.
The endless whys and the proudly wrong-footed shoes are 2 year old milestones dressed up as everyday chaos. Somewhere between the questions and the spills, your child is learning that their curiosity is safe with you, and that is a beautiful thing to give someone.

Around 30 months. Your toddler is asking "why?" about everything. Welcome to the question phase.
What's happening for you
- A constantly questioning toddler can drain your patience. Why is the sky blue? Why does dadi wear glasses? Why is dal yellow? Some of it is genuine curiosity; some is testing your responses.
Things that often help
- Answer simply, honestly, age-appropriately. "I don't know, let's find out together" is a great answer
- Don't dismiss the question even if it's the 50th time
- Use questions as teaching moments
For mum's patience
- Real food, real sleep, real movement. The fundamentals.
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks. Iron-rich Indian basics.
Worth flagging
- If you find yourself constantly snapping at "why" questions, or yelling at your toddler, that's exhaustion or stress, not bad parenting. Talk to a therapist if patterns are hard to break.
Indian-context note
- In joint families, multiple adults can answer questions, a shared load. Use it. Grandparents often have time and patience for "why" questions that you don't, and the toddler benefits from multiple perspectives.
Indian-tradition tip
- Many Indian families use stories from mythology, Panchatantra, Jataka tales to answer "why" questions. The story-as-answer format has worked for centuries. Find the books; use them.
Indian-mum reminder
- You don't have to answer every question instantly or perfectly. "That's a good question. Let me think." is a valid answer. So is "I don't know".
Indian-context tip
- Indian families often have unspoken rhythms, chai at 4, dinner by 8, family Sundays. Working with these rhythms saves energy. Fighting them costs energy. Notice what works in your home and lean into it.
Answering the fiftieth why of the morning takes a kind of patience nobody claps for, so let this be your reminder to refill your own cup. A quiet chai, a short walk, a small act of mother self care between the questions; these keep your gentleness alive.

Activity This Week: Vertical-Line Drawing

2 min read
Focused practice on vertical strokes. By 27 months, toddler has wrist control for deliberate lines.
How to do itTape paper to floor or low table. Draw vertical line yourself. Hand crayon to toddler. "Now you make a line!" Repeat several lines.
What it builds- Pencil control, intentional mark-making, and pre-writing.
- Big paper, chunky non-toxic crayons, low table, Indian-home setup works.
- Persistent disinterest in any activity, or sudden loss of skills toddler had, both worth mentioning at the next pediatrician visit.
- During morning art slot.
- Vertical first. Then horizontal. Then crosses (vertical + horizontal).
- Kolam, alpana, rangoli all start with simple lines. Toddler learns visual structure.
- Same activity at roughly the same time daily for 1–2 weeks builds skills faster than scattered attempts. Toddler learning compounds with repetition. Indian-home rhythms support this naturally, pick a slot, stick to it.
- Multiple adults playing, dadi, papa, mausi, adds variety. Toddler builds adaptability through different voices, paces, and patience levels.
- Vertical practice is harder than table-top, builds different muscles. Use chart paper from the stationery shop.
- Faber-Castell, Camel kids' sets work. Pencil grip is years away, fist-grip is fine.
- Devanagari, Tamil, Bengali, all Indian scripts start with vertical strokes. Pre-letter practice now sets up writing later.
- Same time, same paper. Toddler returns to the same paper across days, sees own progress.
- Indian rangoli practice, vertical lines down to the ground, is a sneaky way to practise the same motor skill.
Those wobbly crayon lines are the earliest handwriting of a person you are raising, and a lovely marker of toddler development. Keep one of those scribbled sheets somewhere safe; one day it will feel like treasure.
