117 Week Old Toddler: Your Toddler's Development and Your Recovery This Week
Your toddler is 117 weeks old (27 months). Your toddler wants to do everything themselves and is furious that it's hard. For you, around 28 months. Your toddler is more emotionally complex, they understand happy, sad, angry, scared, and try to express these. This week's activity is Self-Wash Hands, all of it tracked below.
Week 117
Your baby is 2 years 3 months old
Baby says this week
I love to speak some imperfect sentences and that too confidently like when I am asking something from you, I will point on that object and say “thank you”. I will also use some incorrect words while speaking like “Me jump big”. No matter how hard you try to improve my vocabulary and grammatical errors, I will still make some mistakes because I easily forget what you teach me, Mummy. I understand when someone is sad at home and I will try to comfort them however when it becomes difficult to understand my strong feelings then I easily forget about the other person. I remember all that you have taught me during potty training however when some accidents happen, I get scared Mummy but you never fail to pamper and cuddle me.
Your Toddler's Development
2 min read
Your toddler wants to do everything themselves and is furious that it's hard.
At around 29 to 30 months, self-sufficiency signs are everywhere, putting on one piece of clothing, feeding themselves (messily), brushing teeth (badly, but with enthusiasm). The catch is that their feelings are bigger than their skills, and they crash into the gap between what they want to do and what they can do many times a day. That's where tantrums come from.
Tantrums, what actually works- Stay calm. Your calm is contagious; so is your frustration.
- Name the feeling in a short sentence: "You wanted to pour it. It spilled. That was upsetting."
- Don't fix it in the moment. Just hold space. Offer a hug if they want one, space if they don't.
- Once the storm passes, move on. No lectures.
- Give them slightly easier versions of the grown-up task. A small jug with a little water. A T-shirt with a big neck hole.
- Take photos of their messy self-feeding attempts rather than cleaning mid-meal. The mess is the practice.
- Sleep and food first. A tired, hungry toddler has zero tolerance.
- Daily tantrums are normal. Mention it to the doctor if tantrums involve: holding their breath until they pass out, regular self-injury, or losing skills they used to have.
- A fever that stays above 38.5°C for more than 48 hours, refusing all fluids, unusual drowsiness, or trouble breathing, call your pediatrician right away.
- Soft khichdi with a spoonful of ghee, mashed roti dipped in dal, a small bowl of curd-rice with a pinch of jaggery, these go down easily and pack iron and fat in the right amounts.
The gap between what your child wants to do and what they can do is where so much toddler development quietly happens, and you are the safe hands they crash into when it feels too big. Your calm in their storm is a gift they will feel long after they forget the spilled water.
Your Health & Lifestyle

Around 28 months. Your toddler is more emotionally complex, they understand happy, sad, angry, scared, and try to express these.
What's happening for you
- Emotional storms are part of every day. Your toddler doesn't have full vocabulary for feelings yet, so big feelings come out as tantrums, withdrawal, or hitting.
Things that often help
- Name the feeling for them: "You are angry. You wanted that toy." Stay calm-faced (their nervous system mirrors yours)
- Don't try to reason mid-meltdown
- Hug afterwards, when wave passes
For mum's emotional regulation
You can't help a toddler regulate when you're dysregulated yourself. Things that help your own state:
- Real food, real sleep, daily movement
- A 5-minute breath practice when you sense the wave coming
- A weekly therapy session if patterns are hard to break
Eating well
- Three meals + two snacks. Magnesium-rich foods (almonds, jaggery, dark chocolate).
Worth flagging
- If you find yourself unable to stay calm during toddler meltdowns, yelling, hitting, or shutting down, please talk to a therapist. Generational patterns of fear-based discipline are common in Indian families and can be unlearned. CBT, parent coaching, or therapy with a trained therapist works.
Indian-tradition tip
- Pranayama (specifically anulom-vilom and bhramari) has centuries of Indian wisdom behind it as emotional-regulation tools. Even 5 minutes morning and evening helps. No equipment needed.
Indian-context exercise note
- Indian fitness traditions, yoga, surya namaskar, pranayama, kalaripayattu, dance, all accessible without equipment. 30 minutes most days. Online or local. Build it in slowly, sustainably.
Indian-mum life-stage reminder
- You are 2-3 years into mum life. The next 15+ years stretch ahead. Sustainable beats sprint. Build habits now that scale: real food most days, real sleep when possible, daily movement, weekly social or solo time, an annual full health check.
Holding your own storms steady while parenting a toddler through theirs is some of the hardest, most invisible work there is. Be as gentle with your feelings as you are with your child's; you are both still learning, and that is exactly as it should be.

Activity This Week: Self-Wash Hands

2 min read
Toddler washes their own hands properly. By 26 months, toddler can wet, soap, scrub, rinse with minor help.
How to do itPlace a step stool by the basin. Show: turn on tap, wet hands, soap, scrub for 10 seconds, rinse, dry. Repeat daily.
What it builds- Self-care, fine motor, hygiene habit, and independence.
- Indian-market kid step stools are inexpensive. Soft soap with a fun smell motivates. Pair with the home rhythm: before food, after toilet, after coming home.
- Persistent disinterest in any activity, or sudden loss of skills toddler had, both worth mentioning at the next pediatrician visit.
- Same activity at roughly the same time daily for 1–2 weeks builds skills faster than scattered attempts. Toddler learning compounds with repetition. Indian-home rhythms support this naturally, pick a slot, stick to it.
- A 20-second handwash song makes timing fun.
- The before-food and after-toilet ritual is core Indian household training. Toddler picks it up early.
- Multiple adults playing, dadi, papa, mausi, adds variety. Toddler builds adaptability through different voices, paces, and patience levels.
- Toddler can't reach the basin without one, buy or borrow a small wooden stool. Indian-market plastic ones are cheap.
- Sing through it twice while soaping. Roughly 20 seconds, the right wash duration.
- Before meals, after toilet, after coming home from outside, after touching pets. Build the rhythm now, it sticks for life.
- Less drop-and-stomp mess. Pump bottles toddlers can press themselves.
Soap bubbles, a step stool and a song: everyday routines become joyful activities for 2 year old independence when you turn them into little rituals. The patience you pour into these small lessons becomes the confidence your child stands on.
