10 Week Old Baby: Your Baby's Development and Your Recovery This Week

Movements are smoother this week. You will see your baby moving arms and legs in circles, especially when watching people nearby. All this kicking and stretching is the build-up to real mobility later.

Give your baby space to move, a blanket on the floor, or a playmat, and let them wriggle. No need for a lot of equipment. Just safe floor space.

• The second dose of the infant schedule in India is around 10 weeks: DPT (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis), HepB, OPV or IPV, Hib, PCV and Rotavirus. A mild fever, fussiness or a sore leg for 24 to 48 hours is normal. Plenty of feeds, a cuddle, and your pediatrician's advice on fever medicine is usually all that is needed.

• Still the rule, back, firm flat mattress, nothing else in the crib. Peak SIDS window.

• Fever over 38 °C (100.4 °F) in a baby this small, refusing feeds for more than a couple in a row, very limp and hard to wake, breathing very fast or very slowly, blue lips or fingernails, or a rash that does not fade when pressed, go to the doctor right away.

All that wriggling on the mat is your baby quietly drafting plans for crawling, standing, and one day running to you. Baby development loves this kind of easy floor time, and it loves a relaxed mother watching even more.

Ten weeks in. Periods may not be back yet, but you can already get pregnant. Worth knowing.

Postpartum contraception, the actual options

• LAM (Lactational Amenorrhea Method): about 98% effective IF all three are true: baby is under 6 months, you are exclusively breastfeeding day and night with no formula or solids, AND your periods have not returned. Miss any condition, and effectiveness drops sharply.
• Copper IUD (Cu-T): hormone-free, safe with breastfeeding, can be inserted from 6 weeks postpartum, lasts 5–10 years.
• Hormonal IUD (Mirena): progestin-only, breastfeeding-safe, lasts 5 years, lighter periods.
• Mini-pill (progestin-only): breastfeeding-safe, must be taken at the same time daily.
• Combined pill: not recommended while exclusively breastfeeding; revisit after weaning.
• Barrier methods (condom, diaphragm): simple, non-hormonal, use at every act.
• Permanent options: tubectomy / vasectomy if you are sure family is complete.

Talk to your gynae at the next visit about which fits your body and life.

Worth flagging

• First period postpartum is often heavier and more crampy than your usual. If it is so heavy you are soaking pads in under 2 hours, lasts more than 7 days, or comes with severe pain, call your gynae.

Indian context

• Many Indian women rely on natural methods or partner methods. All are valid choices, but understand the failure rates clearly. Your gynae will not judge, just bring questions.

A note before you decide

• Different gynaes have different leans on contraception. If something feels too pushy or unclear, get a second opinion, many cities have FOGSI-affiliated gynaes who counsel patiently. The right choice depends on your body, your breastfeeding plan, your family plan and your comfort. Take your time.

One more thing

• Men's contraception (condom, vasectomy) is a real option that often gets skipped in conversations. Worth raising at home if it makes sense for your situation.

Decisions about your body deserve the same care you pour into every feed and every lullaby. Asking questions, taking your time, choosing what fits your life: that is postpartum recovery in its most grown-up form, and it is entirely yours to lead.
