Does Nestlé CERELAC® Contain Artificial Sweeteners?

When babies first begin transitioning from milk-only feeding to solid foods, parents search for trusted infant cereals. As part of this process, one of the first things they do is check the ingredient list, understandably conscious about what goes into it — especially added sugar, refined sugar, or artificial sweeteners.

For years, Nestlé CERELAC® has been a trusted choice in the infant cereal category. One of the many reasons is that Nestlé constantly works towards reviewing and improving its recipes, with a focus on options with no or minimal refined sugar and artificial sweeteners.

However, in an attempt to address the concerns and help parents make informed choices, this article takes a closer look at whether CERELAC® contains artificial sweeteners or refined sugar.

It also explains where the sweetness in CERELAC® comes from naturally, how to read the label correctly, and why CERELAC® remains a trusted choice for infant cereals.

What Are the Ingredients Present in Nestlé CERELAC®?

Nestlé CERELAC® contains ingredients that are carefully selected for safety, quality, and the nutritional needs of growing babies. It is also made with NO added Preservatives, NO Colours, and NO Flavours. The ingredients may vary by variant, but commonly include:

Multigrain

  • It may include grains such as wheat, rice, oats, ragi, barley, and corn.

  • These grains provide energy to support your baby’s growth and daily activities.

Milk Solids

  • Milk is added after removing water through evaporation.

  • It provides protein, calcium, and natural sweetness from lactose (which is the sugar naturally present in milk).

Fruits or vegetable concentrates

  • These are made by removing water from fruit or vegetable juice.

  • They help add natural taste and sweetness, depending on the CERELAC® variant.

Vitamins & minerals

  • They help support immunity (with Vitamins A, C and Zinc), brain and cognitive development (with Iron, Omega-3 and Vitamin B1), and bone and muscle growth (with Protein, Calcium, Vitamin D and Phosphorus). In all, Nestlé CERELAC® is a source of 15 key nutrients.

Alpha-amylase enzyme

  • It is a naturally occurring enzyme that helps break down complex carbohydrates, making the cereal easier for infants to digest.

Does Nestlé CERELAC® Contain Any Artificial Sweeteners?

Before answering this, it is important to understand that artificial sweeteners and refined sugar are not the same. Artificial sweeteners are sugar substitutes, while refined sugar usually refers to added table sugar, such as sucrose.

The standard Nestlé CERELAC® formulas do not contain any artificial sweeteners. However, depending on the region, age group, and variant, a few recipes may contain added sugars such as sucrose (which is an acceptable source of carbohydrate as per Indian food regulations).

However, you can rest assured that most of the sugar in Nestlé’s infant cereal recipes comes from natural ingredients only.

It is also important to note that Nestlé CERELAC® recipes are formulated in strict compliance with local food regulations and standards, including FSSAI and BIS guidelines. These standards clearly define the requirements for nutrients, including sugar, in infant and baby food products.

What’s more, the Nestlé CERELAC® range has 14 variants without refined sugar. These variants are made without added refined sugar and do not contain artificial sweeteners. Parents can choose the appropriate CERELAC® variant based on their baby’s age, feeding stage, personal preference, and paediatrician’s advice.

Where Does the Sweetness in CERELAC® No Refined Sugar Range Come From?

No Refined Sugar certainly does not mean no sweetness. In the CERELAC® No Refined Sugar range, the sweetness comes naturally from ingredients that are already part of the recipe, such as cereals, milk solids, and fruit or vegetable concentrates.

This natural sweetness helps balance the taste of iron-fortified ingredients, which can sometimes have a strong taste. That is what helps make the CERELAC® more acceptable for babies as they start including cereals in their daily diet.

Here’s where the natural sweetness may come from:

Lactose

Derived from milk solids

Fructose

Derived from fruit or vegetable juice concentrates

Carbohydrates & Maltose

Derived from Cereals like wheat, rice, oats

How to Read the CERELAC® Label for Sugar and Sweeteners

When choosing a baby cereal, the easiest way to understand sugar and sweeteners is to read two sections on the pack: the ingredients list and the nutrition table.

First, check the ingredients list. Look for ingredients such as cereals, milk solids, fruit or vegetable concentrates, and any added sugar sources, if present.

Next, check the nutrition table. Here, you will usually find values such as total sugars and added sugars. Total sugars include all sugars present in the product, including those naturally coming from ingredients like milk, cereals, fruits, or vegetables. Added sugars refer to sugars that are added separately during the formulation of the product. Nestlé transparently declares its nutrient values, including total sugars and added sugars, on its CERELAC® packs, as required by local food regulations.

Parents should also check the recommended age group, serving instructions, and variant details before choosing a CERELAC® product. For the right choice, always consider your baby’s age, feeding stage, dietary needs, and your paediatrician’s advice.

Conclusion: Should Parents Worry About Artificial Sweeteners in CERELAC®?

Artificial sweeteners and refined sugar are growing concerns for parents when babies first begin transitioning to solids. Nestlé understands this concern and continues to work towards addressing it. That is why, today, much of the sugar in Nestlé CERELAC® comes directly from natural ingredients.

Moreover, Nestlé infant cereal products manufactured in India are strictly compliant with local regulations and standards, including FSSAI and BIS guidelines, which define the requirements for all nutrients, including added sugars.

Nestlé also regularly reviews its products to further reduce added sugar levels without compromising nutritional standards. Over the past 5 years, the brand has reduced added sugars by up to 30%, depending on the variant.

Hence, Nestlé CERELAC® remains a trusted choice for parents in the infant cereals category.
