Introduction to Fertility: In Vitro Fertilization Procedure

FAQs

IVF is an abbreviation for In Vitro Fertilization. In Vitro means outside the body, and fertilization means when a sperm interacts with an ovum to form an egg.

IVF involves fertilizing an egg outside the female's body and then, the fertilized egg is implanted in the female's uterus.

How is it done?

  • A drug in an injection is given to the female to suppress her natural menstrual cycle.
  • The woman is given FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) containing fertility medications. FSH causes the ovaries to generate more eggs. Doctors use vaginal ultrasound scans to monitor ovarian function.
  • Follicular aspiration is a minor surgical operation used to extract eggs. A tiny needle is placed into an ovary. The needle has a suction device attached. It sucks the eggs. This is done for each ovary.

IVF is considered by those women who cannot conceive naturally. In Vitro Fertilization is a scientific way of helping a woman get pregnant and experience the joy of motherhood. IVF is also used to treat various issues of infertility like:

  • Advanced age of conception.
  • When the fallopian tubes are blocked or damaged.

IVF cycles last approximately two months. Women under the age of 35 have a 50% chance of becoming pregnant and having a baby with their initial IVF egg retrieval and subsequent embryo transfer(s).

Numerous factors influence your capacity to conceive and deliver a healthy baby with IVF.Generally, your doctor can explain why you are not able to get pregnant and your prospects of having a baby with IVF.Women who do not conceive after their first IVF round still have a very excellent probability of conceiving on their second, third, or even subsequent IVF cycles.

The IVF process is unique to each patient, and what may seem difficult to one, may not be uncomfortable for another. Some stages of the process, such as injections or egg retrieval, can be painful but never unbearable. Severe pain may indicate an IVF complication, but these are rare and usually treatable.

Medication self-injection can be painful, but most patients report it as uncomfortable. Assisted injections can be beneficial and reassuring for people who are afraid of needles.

There is no doubt about the fact that IVF babies are as normal as other babies. Be it physically, mentally, or emotionally; they are no different from babies conceived naturally. The myth that IVF babies could be abnormal or not as regular as children conceived naturally, is an absolute myth and should be shared as much as possible so that people stop believing in such nonsense.

During IVF, parents-to-be can find out their baby's gender using PGD/PGS/PGT-A! Gender selection is nearly foolproof, thanks to the capacity of a fertility doctor to identify XX or XY chromosomes in an embryo using PGD tests.

However, not all patients will be able to create viable embryos of the desired gender due to age-related, egg-supply-related, and sperm-related factors. If sperm or egg donation is an option for the intended parents, they can decide the child's gender.

IVF and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) or preimplantation genetic screening (PGS/PGT-A) for gender selection have exceptionally high success rates, whether medicinal or elective. We're well-versed in all methods of gender selection, including sperm spinning (the process of dividing sperm into X and Y chromosomes), but combining IVF with genetic testing is the only surefire way to guarantee that your gender selection is 100 percent accurate.

Depending on the nature of your fertility troubles, you may be given a specific procedure, which will come with its own set of instructions and costs. The cost of intrauterine insemination (IUI) is usually lower than the cost of a significant operation for couples who need it. People who need IVF to treat their infertility must follow the same rules.

For the most part, the high cost of an IVF treatment can be attributed to the extensive pre-and post-treatment planning required. Additionally, couples will be required to pay for regular consultations, hormone prescriptions, and the potential for multiple cycles in addition to the treatment itself.

What is the best age for IVF?

The fertile years of a woman's life are between the ages of 20 and 30. Although assisted reproductive technologies can help with pregnancy and childbirth. The odds of having a healthy baby drop as people get older. If you're a woman over 35, you're probably considering IVF as a last choice. You have a better chance of getting pregnant with IVF if you're younger, as is valid for everything else connected to fertility. IVF does not alter the age of your eggs, so planning is essential.

Women in their 20s and 30s who use IVF have the best results. Their chances of success begin to dwindle after they hits their mid-30s.

Because a donor egg shares no DNA with its intended mother, the baby may not look like its mother. However, if her partner's sperm was used, the kid may look like their father.

Having a child naturally does not guarantee they will look like you, and utilizing a donor egg does not guarantee your child will not look like you. If you and the donor are of the same ethnicity, the baby may look like you.
