Gain weight the healthy way during your pregnancy

Weight gain during pregnancy is often a very delicate subject for most to-be moms. You want to make sure your baby is getting the right nutrition but you are also wondering how you will lose the baby weight once your child is born. It may also happen that your hormones going crazy may lead you to major cravings; and not always for healthy food, or completely killing your appetite. This may result in you going into a spree of eating more than you should and gaining way too many kilos or eating less than the required quantity. Some women even lose some weight during the first trimester due to the morning sickness but it is only for a very short duration. In case you have any doubts, you must check with your healthcare professional.   How much weight should you gain? The ideal weight to gain during pregnancy for a person of normal weight is 11-15 kg. Given 40 weeks of pregnancy, this would mean not more than 0.3 to 0.5 kg in a week. At the time of birth, an average Indian baby weighs anywhere between 2.5-2.8kgs. Apart from this, there are many other elements that make up for your body weight. These include the uterus (0.9 kgs), the placenta (0.5 kgs), breasts (0.4kgs), blood volume (1.2 kgs), amniotic fluid (2.6 kgs) and some extra fat (about 2.5 kgs).      Your BMI and pregnancy weight gain According to experts, women should aim for gaining weight based on their BMI: If your pre-pregnancy BMI was >18.5, you should gain 12-18 kgs. If your pre-pregnancy BMI was between 18.5 - 22.9, you should gain 11 - 16 kgs. If your pre-pregnancy BMI was between 23 - 25, you should gain 6 - 11 kgs. If your pre-pregnancy BMI was <25, you should gain 5 - 9 kgs.   Being Overweight and Pregnant For most women, gaining weight is easier said than done. There are a number of reasons why gaining excess weight during pregnancy is bad for both you and the baby. For you, it could lead to conditions like gestational hypertension, preeclampsia or gestational diabetes. It may also lead to your baby being born via cesarean section, a preterm baby or a baby born at a higher weight than normal (a big baby - macrosomia); which can lead to health risks like childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes for your baby. Don’t lose heart if you find yourself halfway through your pregnancy already having gained the entire recommended weight. It is not too late and you can still get things under control. The key is to focus on the weekly metric of 0.3-0.5 kg and try and stick to that. Gaining a lot of weight early on often makes pregnant women pessimistic and they stop making efforts to gain weight in a healthy way. This makes the situation worse and makes their weight gain go out of control. Here’s what you need to do if you’ve gained too much weight -  Regular Exercise- Get half an hour of gentle exercise in a day. It could be prenatal yoga, a walk in the park with your partner or a gentle swim. Even if you can’t get 30 minutes every day, a minimum of 10 minutes is critical. This will not only help you stay healthy for your baby and prevent various complications but also keep off those extra kilos. Do not crash diet - Going on a crash diet in order to lose the excess weight is even more harmful than gaining weight. Talk to your gynecologist and allow her to suggest the required dietary modifications. Take special care of your diet- If you can afford the services of a nutritionist that’s great; if not there are still several reliable resources online that will give you detailed advice on maintaining a healthy and balanced diet. Your doctor will also have some useful tips. Do try to maintain a healthy diet that is balanced and gives your baby the right nutrients. Also, remember that you only need 300 extra calories per day when you’re pregnant, so make sure you don’t go overboard trying to “eat for two people”.   Being Underweight during Pregnancy If you're eating the right amount of calories during pregnancy and you're not gaining enough weight fast enough, you need to think before eating. If you’ve lost your appetite, focus on consuming quality calories in small packages. Some good options include foods high in healthy fats, such as avocados and nuts, as well as higher-calorie grains and legumes. To make sure you are gaining the right amount of weight in a healthy way, here are some tips to keep in mind: Do not skip breakfast - Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if you skip it, the chances of acidity and gas increase, which decreases your appetite and leads to other GI tract problems. Add healthy calories to your everyday diet - Grab a handful of nuts, healthy salads and avocados to your diet so that your body can gain the required weight. Eat after every 2 hours - Instead of eating 3 large meals, eat small portions every two hours so that they can be digested easily. You can have 3 main meals, along with a mid-morning snack and an evening snack. Take your supplements regularly - Do not miss your multivitamins and mineral supplements, since these are crucial for the development of your baby. Do not consume junk foods - Junk foods and processed foods may supply a lot of calories to your body but they have no nutrition and they contain various artificial sweeteners and other additives, which are harmful to your body. Remember, the bulk of your nourishment should come from whole foods. Since every woman is different and every pregnancy is unique, the kilos gained by every woman will vary. Slow weight gain in breastfed babies

Most breastfed babies will get enough breast milk and gain weight in a consistent and expected pattern as long as they latch on well and breastfeed often. But, what if you think your child isn't getting what he needs to grow and thrive? If you're breastfeeding and your newborn is gaining weight slowly or inconsistently then he may not be getting enough breast milk. So, here's what to look for and what to do if you think your child isn't gaining weight well. Breastfeeding and Slow Weight Gain Breastfed newborns can lose up to 10 percent of their birth weight during the first week. Then, by the time a child is two weeks old, he should regain the weight that was lost. After that, for the next three months or so, breastfed babies gain about 28 gram per day. Of course, every newborn is different, and some children just normally grow more slowly than others. So, as long as your baby is breastfeeding well and his health care exams are on target, a slower weight gain may not be an issue. When Slow Weight Gain Is a Problem Weight gain is the best sign that a child is getting enough breast milk. When a baby is gaining weight slower than expected, it could mean that she's not getting enough. So, if your newborn is not back to her birth weight in two weeks, or she's not gaining weight consistently after that, it may be that there's a breastfeeding issue that's preventing your child from getting enough breast milk. The Reasons Your Baby May Not Be Gaining Weight as Expected Your newborn is not latching on well: A good latch allows your child to remove the breast milk from your breast without getting tired out and frustrated. If your baby is not latching on correctly, or latching on to just your nipple, she won't be able to remove the breast milk very well. Your baby isn't breastfeeding often enough: Breastfeed your newborn at least every two to three hours through the day and night for the first six to eight weeks. If he wants to breastfeed more often, put him back to the breast. Your child is not breastfeeding long enough at each feeding: Newborns should breastfeed for about 8 to 10 minutes on each side. As your child gets older, she won't need to breastfeed as long to get the breast milk she needs, but during the first few weeks, try to keep her awake and actively sucking for as long as you can. Your little one is in pain: If your baby is not comfortable because of a birth injury or an infection such as thrush in her mouth, she may not breastfeed well, and therefore she may be gaining weight slowly. You have a low breast milk supply: A low milk supply can prevent your child from getting enough breast milk, but it could also be the result of your baby not breastfeeding well. Eating well in your third trimester: 37-40 weeks

Some women do not prefer eating at all at this stage but there are women who face the first stage for very long period; so, they need snacks and drinks from time to time. Here are few tips that can help you through. Eating Healthy With Your Baby In The First Two Weeks Once the baby is born, it’s not over yet. You still need to continue to have healthy food to recover and to breastfeed your baby. However you cannot cook alone; so, take help of your relatives or cook and keep it in your fridge. You can use it for a week and eat in batches. If you don’t have enough support or you are living just with your husband then you may want to hire a cook and a maid. Let them look after the kitchen till you recover and are able to do the household works. Some also prefer to order food from reputed restaurants. So, think about it and choose an option appropriate for you. Breakfast As always keep your breakfast simple yet healthy. Prefer a bowl of milk with cereal like cornflakes or sandwiches with lots of veggies. Salads are also good to start but make sure to have a glass of milk for energy. Keeping your breakfast simple will help you a lot by saving time and energy. Lunch Soups can be a good idea to go for. Beetroot is rich in folate, magnesium, potassium. Avoid adding cream or yogurt while preparing beetroot juice and freeze it so that you have it in batches. You need beetroot, carrot, celery, potato, onion, olive oil, vegetable stock, bay leaves, etc. to prepare this. Once you peel the beetroot grate it or process it and cut carrot into small pieces. Add celery and potato pieces and blitz it. Heat some olive oil in a saucepan and stir in some chopped onion. Once it turn light brown add vegetables, stock and bay leaves. Boil and cover the lid. Let it boil over low flame for 25 minutes and then blend it to smooth liquid using food processor. If you add cream or yogurt then do not store it. Snack Try having fruity flapjacks in the evening as oats present in it is rich in fibre. It can be stored in the freezer for few days. You will need sunflower margarine, demerara sugar, golden syrup, porridge oats and chopped dates. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees C and heat margarine and sugar till they melt completely. Stir in the golden syrup, oats, dates and mix the ingredients well. Take a greased baking tin and press into it and bake for 12 to 15 minutes until it turns golden brown. Remove and keep it aside to cool down. Cut the flapjacks and leave it to cool down. You can also have fresh fruit juice, smoothies like mango smoothie, tomato apple juice, baked banana chips, etc. Dinner Have you ever tried ragu sauce before? On freezing it, ragu sauce will can be stay for a couple of days. Have it with pasta, lasagne sheets and cheese sausage. You need lean minced beef, finely chopped onion, crushed garlic clove, smoked bacon pieces, chopped tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, red wine and oregano. Take the beef in a non-stick pan and heat it; keep stirring while breaking up this mixture. Add chopped onion, bacon, garlic and heat it to fry. Keep stirring and cooking till onions turn soft. Chop the sundried tomatoes and add them to the pan along with chopped canned tomatoes, herbs and some wine. Let this boil for some time and then reduce the flame. Cover the lid and leave it for 35 to 40 minutes and then stir well. Alcohol in the wine you added will cook off slowly. Take it out and let it cool down before you have it.
